Lydia's pov
Hearing those words, I felt like the ground should open and I should bury myself in it.
"You are a curse! You will bring misfortune to this park!" they began to shout and started throwing dirt on me.
I was really angry, but I couldn't do anything. If I were to start fighting each of them, they would overpower me because I wasn't strong enough to take them out.
I covered my eyes and bent my head to avoid them hurting my face. I was smelling rotten egg, and the smell made my stomach churn.
"Stop this nonsense!" I heard Mia's angry voice, and she held my hand, taking me out of the place.
She took me to a place where I had never been before. It was a waterfall, and we took the back gate of the obryn base to get there.
She helped me wash my hair and my clothes while I stood watching her, wearing only my undies. I really felt uncomfortable, but I had no choice.
We were there for a long time and waited till my clothes dried. It was already evening, and the day was getting dark.
"Won't we be punished if we go back?" I asked and watched her smile.
"What?" I asked her, and she replied,
"Umm… the person guarding the back gate is my mate," she spoke, startling me.
"Are you for real?" I asked, still surprised that she found her mate here.
"Yes," she replied, smiling ear to ear, and it hit me is this what having a mate means? Hers was different. Looking at her, you could tell she was pleased with it. But Felisha? She wasn't. She hated her mate like he was her enemy.
"Wow… that's cool," I spoke and watched her smile.
"The other guy that died…" she started, then paused, looking at me deeply, "was he your mate? I mean, when I heard the news I didn't want to believe it until I ask you myself," she added, and I smiled. She seemed to care about my feelings.
"He is not. I was framed and treated unjustly. Maybe I am just destined to suffer here. In my past li—" I stopped immediately, knowing I was saying what I was not meant to say.
"I mean… when I was with my family I didn't face such suffering," I corrected myself quickly to avoid suspicion.
"Don't say that, Lydia. It can happen to anyone. Just look at the brighter side. And also, don't worry about not being able to transform, you will someday. I guess your wolf is special because sometimes good things don't come easy." She said, and my eyes grew moist at her words; it really showed she cared about me.
"How does it feel to find your mate?" I asked and watched her smile again. But before she could reply, we heard footsteps coming to our side, and we quickly hid behind a big rock, holding our breaths so as not to attract attention.
"It seems someone is here," we heard a lady's voice, and a male voice sounded,
"So what? Whoever dares interrupt us will meet their ancestors tonight," he said and immediately looked at our direction, and our eyes locked, causing my heart to almost jump out of my chest in fear.
He smirked and acted like he didn't see me, and I was relieved, but that didn't shake off the fear in me.
I hid my face away and met Mia's worried face.
"What did you see?" I heard her voice in my head, and I was taken aback.
I blinked and looked at her strangely. Can she now talk inside my head? I wondered without saying a word to her.
"Did you see them?" her voice sounded again, and I was shocked.
"What the hell is going on?" I screamed inside me and watched Mia cover her mouth, suppressing her laugh.
"I can hear you too, Lydia. Let's talk this way," she replied.
"How can you hear me… like I'm talking inside me?" I questioned silently and watched her smile.
"We mind linked, Lydia," she replied, and before I could answer, we heard the guy's voice.
"I heard there is an obryn who hasn't transformed yet. We should get her next."
The hair on my back stood on alert, and my heart raced rapidly.
Are they coming for me? Fear gripped me. The guy's look was scary enough, and now what did they want from me?
"Our king would be happy about it," the lady finally said, and my heart skipped a beat. Did they mean the king of the Red Realm or the king of this park?
Before I could think further, we heard them chanting some ancient words, a blinding light flashed, and then everything went silent.
Me and Mia sighed in relief and quickly walked away from the big rock. I rushed to my dress and put it on.
The day was getting darker and darker, so we began to walk toward the back gate of the obryn base.
We were still far from it when we suddenly saw a white blinding light, blinding us for some minutes.
When the light dimmed, we recovered our sight and then we saw them. The lady and the guy we saw close to the waterfall. My heart dropped.
They blocked our path, their faces unfriendly.
"What do you want?" Mia asked, and they both laughed at her words.
"We want her," the guy said, looking straight at me. My heart began to race rapidly.
Why can't my life be peaceful for once?
"What for?" Mia asked, looking at them closely.
"No need for further explanation. We came to get her, and we are not leaving without taking her with us," he said, his voice laced with chill.
"What should I do?" I wondered and looked at Mia.
They both brought out daggers from their pockets and flashed a pleasing smile.
Is this where I will finally die? I thought and looked at Mia.
Then I heard her voice in my head, "Run!" And immediately we parted ways, running as fast as our legs could carry us. But I couldn't run as fast as Mia, and in no time they caught me.
"Let me go!" I shouted, and Mia stopped, looking back at me. She began to run toward me.
"No! Don't come! Go find help!" I screamed, hoping she would go. I knew we wouldn't survive, so I wanted her to at least escape. But she didn't obey, she ran toward me.
"Let her go!" she shouted and launched at the lady, and they began to fight. The guy was looking at me.
A thought came to my mind, and I gathered courage and used all my strength to kick the guy in his groin. He screamed in pain, and I ran toward Mia.
The lady was about to stab Mia, but I kicked her hand and pushed her away from Mia.
"Let's go!" I shouted and pulled Mia up, and she held my hand as we ran together.
"Don't let them escape!" I heard the guy's voice, and when I turned back, I saw the lady running toward us at full speed.
Then I stumbled, causing me and Mia to fall to the ground. When
I looked up, I saw a pair of golden eyes belonging to a wolf right in front of us, and I knew we were done for.
