Chapter 16 - The Funeral

It was a somber day in the Arthurian capital. The fires had been put out by the storm clouds that formed above the capital. Children could be heard crying, looking for their parents in the wreckage of the buildings. The usually happy and upbeat Arthurian capital had been reduced to complete sadness within one day. "He sacrificed himself for you." Alice was in shock as she held the dead body of Damon Asiren. "I know he did." Lancelot looked at Alice enraged. "Why would he do something so dumb? I thought someone like him would have put more thought into his actions."

"He did think about his actions Lance. He sacrificed himself so that way you both could live." Those words made Lancelot grit his teeth in anger. "Why would he save her!? She caused all of this pain and suffering around us. She should be dead. Not him." The words had no effect on Alice. It went in one ear and right out the other. Damon's last words kept ringing through her head. 'And please...all of you. Live on for me...' Those words struck Alice down. She knocked him out to protect him from being hurt by her, but instead he chose to protect her.

He asked us all to live on for him. He laid down his life for all of us. "Give me his body, Alice." Alice looked up at Lancelot. She couldn't hold in the sadness she felt as tears started to flow down her face. "No! I won't let anyone take him away from me." Lancelot's fists clenched, the heat in his chest simmering into something colder — regret, maybe. "I know you want to keep him safe... but we need to give him a proper funeral. We need to honor him this way." Alice couldn't bear to let go of him. "Alice, you need to let us bury Damon." She looked back to Merlin. "Merlin! You can revive him, can't you? You can bring him back?"

"His body is too severely damaged. If I brought him back, it would just kill him again. He's gone, Alice." Alice could only laugh hysterically at the suggestion. Was he really gone? If he's gone, then it's all my fault. I got him killed. "Can't you heal his body though? There must be a way to bring him back." Merlin looked at her with a heavy heart. "Lance's Mana is a special kind. Whenever he uses it on his blade, whatever his Mana touches gets broken down at the atomic level. His body can't be repaired. No matter how powerful of a healing spell I cast. The only way his body could be repaired is if his own Mana started to, but I can see that his Mana as well as his soul have already left his body."

"He's really dead then?" Merlin nodded. "He is. I'm sure he will be welcome in whatever afterlife awaits him." Alice shot her head towards Merlin. "There is more than one afterlife?" Merlin nodded. "You were raised a Plassian, so no wonder you only know of Heaven and Hell. There are actually more than just those two. Valhalla and Helheim, The Spirit World, and The Underworld are other afterlives as well. Though the most accepted version of afterlives is Heaven and Hell since you must be of the Norse, Spiritualist, or Greek belief to go to the others."

"He'll be in heaven. I know he will be. I can feel that he's watching us right now. I'm so sorry, Damon. Please forgive me." She continued to weep while holding Damon's body. "Must you narrate this entire thing?" [I do. You are a character in a story. I am The Narrator of stories. It is basically my job. I've placed myself in the story just to help you. Don't forget that.] "Alright. Continue on, I guess. I still don't know why you would bring me here to watch this."

Lancelot grabbed onto Alice's wrist. "Please give us his body to give him a proper burial Alice. We will allow you to be there for the funeral, but we will arrest you afterwards. I will honor Damon's final wish by not killing you." Alice let go of Damon's body as Lancelot picked it up. Lancelot carried Damon's body to a field that seemed to be untouched by all the chaos around them. Merlin followed him with a priest and the militia to make it feel more like a natural funeral. There was unease in the air. Lancelot dug the grave with his own hands. "This grave will be a parting gift for my friend."

"Here we put to rest Damon Asiren. We did not know him for long, but the time we did was precious. He could be described as a person willing to do whatever it takes. He was a kind and gentle person as well as a strong man in combat. He was an upstanding man ready to do whatever it took to protect the people he cared about. He died doing that very thing. Let us give a moment of silence for him." Everyone bowed their heads to show they would be silent. "That was a touching speech about me. Is this what you wanted me to see?" [That is correct. I wanted to show you that people cared about you. Quite different from your backstory, don't you think?]

"You didn't need to go there. You know me as well as I do to know that I don't want to think about that." [I know. I apologize. Are you ready to go to the 25th Circle of Hell yet?] "Soon. We should give you a real name. Not just a title." [A real name? I never thought about it before. What should we name me?] "I have a name for you. A name that makes me think of the greatest big brother in all of fiction." [Oh? I know what you are thinking, but what is this name?] "I'll name you Kamina — after the greatest big brother fiction ever gave us." [Then let's make you the greatest Demon King fiction will ever know.] Damon cracked a smile. "Hell better be ready."
