MAHIRA
I had a meeting with Frenda Corporators today. It's been two weeks since the incident. Thane
wasn't bothering nor pressuring me anymore and I was a bit grateful. I did miss him though and
I was beginning to wonder if he had stopped following me around because he had finally fucked
me.
The sinking feeling that he may have pursued me because of sex scared me. The meeting
started about an hour later. Everything was going well until everything became blurry and
darkness enveloped me.
I slowly opened my eyes, adjusting to the brightness of the room. I sat up straight trying to
remember how I got here. The door of the room opened and a lady in a white coat smiled when
she saw that I was awake.
'You're awake Ms Riley. How are you feeling?'
'Why am I here?'
I'm doctor Susan. You were brought in here by a guy, his name was Ares, they said you fainted.
I ran a few tests and congratulations, you're pregnant with twins.'
I looked at the doctor in disbelief. Pregnant? I only slept with him once, it was just one time.
Shit. Couldn't he use protection. Damn
'Can I go home?'
'Yes. you can but you should take care of yourself. And come for regular checkups for you and
the baby.'
I nodded my head even though I wasn't listening to her. After getting discharged I hired a cab to
the Carson mansion. Maybe I should just forgive him.
Maybe this is a new chapter for me, perhaps I should just put everything past us. He has been
trying, he's been making an effort to attain my forgiveness.
The guard, Samson, was so happy to see me. I didn't think he would still be working here let
alone remember me but he let me in. I promised that I'd come see him some day and his wife as
well. He told me his wife was pregnant with their second baby and she'd be in labour in 2 months. I
congratulated him. We exchanged phone numbers and then he let me in. The doors of the
mention were wide open.
Memories of Elena and I danced around in my head. This very same house that my little girl
lived in. Did she remember me? I walked into the dining room, it looked different, there were two
pillars, I'm not sure what they were for but they weren't here the last time I came.
The pillar obstructed my view hence I couldn't see the whole living room. I stopped in my tracks
when I heard Thane speak.
'Grandmother, after I reconcile with Mahira, I will go and join the army.'
'Okay son, as long as Mahira is our daughter-in-law you can follow your dream.'
'I thought you dropped that idea of joining the army brother but you still want to join the army.'
'If Mahira finds out that you are going to join the army, how do you think she will feel?'
'I really don't care, after I marry her, I will go to the army.'
I couldn't make out who the other voices belonged to besides Elena and Thane's so I guessed
they may belong to his mother or grandmother. I clapped my hands as I came into view, no
longer behind the pillar that had hidden me.
'Wow! What a great idea, really it's a fantastic idea. Was this your plan? To tie me down to your
family and then leave me.'
I looked at Elena who had grown up so much. The way her eyes sparkled made me smile. She
was so tall now, her hair had grown too and so had her taste in fashion. She was wearing a
white silk dress with a bow that made a tail behind and her hair lay on her shoulders.
She walked towards me slowly, a glass of tears in her eyes. I wanted to hug her, to tell her that I
was back, to tell her that I still loved her and I missed her so much but as she extended her
hand to touch me I moved back, crushing whatever hope and happiness she had seeing me.
I tore my attention away from her and looked back at Thane who looked stunned to see me
here.
'Are you going to join the army?'
'Madam, brother always wanted to join the army, two years ago when you left, grandmother told
Thane that if he fixed things with you then he could go and join the army.' Jordan spoke.
I nodded my head then smiled even though everything in me was urging me to scream, to shout
to break something, even though all I wanted to do was curl myself into a ball in some corner
and cry.
'So the only reason you pursued me was only because you wanted to join the army. I was just a
ticket to forgiveness from your grandmother.'
'Mahira, listen I can explain.'
'What exactly can you explain?'
'I agree I pursued you because I wanted to join the army but I really do love you.'
'Wow. Okay. Well then, look at the result of your deeds.'
I took out the sonography test and gave it to him.
I'm sure you don't even understand what's going on in that paper. I'm pregnant with twins and
you are their father, but I guess you don't want to be a father now do you? Listen here and listen
very attentively, I don't want any of you near me. The same way you used to ignore me, do that
again and don't you dare claim rights over my babies.' I wiped the tears that managed to escape and turned to leave but Ms Sophia stood in front of
me preventing me from leaving.
'Mahira sweetie. Please…'
'Don't!' I stopped her before she spoke, my voice firm.
'Mahira please, you need to understand.'
'I was going to give us a chance. But now I see, you just used me for your own personal gain.
What more is there to explain?'
Thane's eyes pleaded with me to understand. He looked so fragile, so pitiful and he looked
guilty but what use was his guilt when my kids would grow up without a father.
'You must be satisfied, you had me wrapped around your finger, played me like a violin, you
fooled me. You made me believe you loved me only to break me again.'
Elena came before me, her face soaked in tears.
'Look at the bright side Fairy. He loves you, he just has to fulfill his dream but he will come back
for you.'
Thane's eyes pleaded for understanding.
'Choose Thane. Me and your kids or the army.'
The room fell silent, awaiting Thane's response. I was being selfish, I know, I know he didn't
deserve to be put in this situation. I know I didn't have to make him choose between his dream
and us but I just wanted him to choose me, I wanted him to choose me so bad I couldn't just let
him go just like that.
'Speak up darn it! You came back into my life, told me you loved me, impregnated me so now
choose. You want me, a happy family or you choose the army.'
'Mahira please don't force Thane to make such a choice. He really does love you no matter the
choice.' his mother said.
'Choose darn it!'
Elena hugged my leg, tears streaming down her face.
'Fairy, please don't be mad, brother loves you.'
'You can't have both.' I kept my gaze on Thane refusing to back down until he chose me.
'I love you Mahira but joining the military is my dream. I can't settle down. Now that I have the
blessings from grandmother. I'm sorry but I'm joining the army.'
I smiled at him, I wanted to act like I wasn't bothered and tell him good luck but I pushed Elena
away and ignored Sofia's attempt to stop me. I ran out of the house.
He didn't choose me. Why didn't he choose me? Why did he never choose me? Just this once
couldn't he choose me, couldn't he choose us, couldn't he choose our babies. Thane didn't come back to me, he didn't call me, he didn't reason he just left. He went to
Georgia for training and left me to take care of myself and my kids all by myself.
I had to accept it eventually though. I learned to accept it and I promised myself that I would be
fine without him, if he ever comes back I won't let him back in.
Pregnancy was far from blissful. I was always tired, I had swollen breasts most of the time and
sometimes they hurt, nausea and vomiting was part of the package too.
I had to use the bathroom frequently and as my belly grew it got harder to take myself to the
toilet and to clean myself, sometimes I would pee myself.
Sometimes it was blissful, when my boys kicked and played together in my stomach.
Sometimes I experienced heartburn, shortness of breath and my sleep was disrupted most of
the time. Kaashvi promised she would come on the day of labour.
I grew a little lonely in the penthouse. I needed help, even though I didn't want to ask for it. I
needed people around me, I felt like I was going crazy. If I stayed alone another month longer,
by the time my boys are born I'd be mentally ill so after so long I decided to call Ms Sofia. What I
did to Elena was wrong.
I called Ms Sofia, certain that she'd decline my advances but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
'Ms Carson. It's me, Mahira.'
'Mahira, I didn't think you would ever call. How are you dear, how is your pregnancy going
along?'
'Well pregnancy is not so romantic without the sperm donor. Either way. That's not why I called. I
want to fix things, I want to fix things with Elena so… I know what I'm about to ask you is difficult
but can Elena come to London?'
'Look, I get that my son hurt you, but my daughter didn't deserve to be treated like that. The fight
is between you and Thane so why is my child being punished.'
'I know, I hurt her and she didn't deserve it. I saw how her eyes lit up when I was there but I
destroyed her happiness. I'm so sorry I want to make it up to her. Please Ms Sofia. Like you
said, the fight is between me and Thane, we are basically family now, I mean I'm carrying your
grandsons so we are forever intertwined. Please. Can you make preparations for Elena to come
here? I'll pay.'
'Take care of my baby. Please.'
'I will, I promise.'
I hung up and looked at my mother's contact information. Should I call her? She deserves to
know that I'm pregnant.
'Hello, Teresa speaking, who am I talking to you?'
I loved my mother. I really did but somehow a part of me didn't want to bring her here. I was
happy without her in my life and it's sick that I'm the one who has to apologize after everything.
It's sick that I'm the one who has to reach out.
Was I making a mistake?
'Mom. It's me Mahira.'
Mom broke down in tears. s
'My child, where have you been? I never thought I would hear your voice ever again.'
'Mother, I will tell you everything. Listen please pack your bags as soon as possible. I want you
to come to London as soon as possible. I already bought tickets for you, for dad, for sister Aliya
and brother.' Mom assured me she'd be done packing in 3 hours then she hung up. I booked a ticket for the
plane that would leave in 4 hours. I rubbed my belly and whispered to my babies.
'I'm sorry, mommy couldn't keep daddy by her side, now because of me you will grow up without
a father.'
Eight hours later, Elena's flight landed in London. I asked my guards to fetch her at the airport
and they came back with her an hour later.
She looked around at my penthouse then gave her bags to one of the servants that went to her.
She didn't look at me not once.
'Baby.'
She walked past me and sat on the couch that I was sitting on grabbing the blanket I had been
using. She scrunched her nose as soon as she brought it to her nose.
'Eeyw. it stinks.'
I walked towards her and she jumped over the sofa standing on the other side.
I'm pregnant Elena, you can't make me run around, listen to me please.'
She crossed her hands over her chest and tapped her foot impatiently.
'Baby, I know I hurt you and you didn't deserve it, but I'm really sorry honey.'
'You just disappeared now you want me back. You are so selfish you know I can't believe it.
What do you want from me?'
'I know baby. I know what I did was selfish but I just wanted Thane to choose me and I didn't
think about it. I treated you so badly and I'm sorry.'
'That's not fair. What you did to me was not fair. Making my brother choose between you and his
dream is not fair. Brother loves you so much but you are blind. You don't want to see it.'
'Love? He chose the army over me and our children. What kind of love is that?'
'You're just as bad as Thane. You are punishing everyone! When you loved him, I was punished
because I wasn't allowed to find you and now when he loves you, you keep running away and
pushing him away. Both of you are so pathetic.'
'I'm just protecting myself, I was being careful.'
'I already understand! You're hurting us all don't you realize it. You are hurting me. You are
ruining me . Why are you punishing me, fairy?'
'Elena, I... I.'
Elena turned her head away.
No! You always say you care, but you never show it! Why are you trying to come back into my
life if you don't have any intention of keeping me. You're a liar. You don't love me.'
'I wanted to resolve our issues. I understand where you're coming from but understand my side
of the story.'
Elena rolled her eyes and pointed her finger at me.
'Your side? You always think about yourself! What about Thane's side? What about mine?'
'I've heard enough Elena. If you can't understand…'
Elena interrupts, 'No, Mahira! You've never listened! You only dictate!'
I never dictate. I'm not like that. I only hurt her once. Why doesn't she understand?
'I love you Elena, I made a mistake once.'
'You left me two years ago then you come back and you leave again. You didn't even look at
me. It hurt when you pushed me away like I was some piece of trash. You don't love me.' 'I do baby. I shouldn't have pushed you away. I wanted to be close. I didn't want to leave baby.
I'm sorry.'
'I miss you Fairy. Why did you leave me?'
She crouched down on the floor and rested her head on her knees, her shoulders shaking. I
walked over to her side and tried to bend down but I couldn't. I couldn't even comfort her even if
I wanted to.
I'm here, baby. I won't leave you ever again, I promise.'
Elena got up and hugged me. She wiped her tears with the hem of my dress.
'If you leave, God will punish you because you made the promise in front of your unborn kids.'
'I'm so scared.'
Elena kissed my belly.
'Hello children. I'm your fairy godmother. Just like your mom is my fairy Godmother, I'm yours as
well.'
'I'm famished. You came earlier than expected so I could only prepare rice and curry. My family
will be here around nine o'clock so please help me order some basic things for them.'
Elena helped me with setting the dinner table. The maids started preparing a meal, it was
simple dishes that didn't take time to prepare so by the time we came back I'm sure they would
be done.
Three hours later, Elena and I went to the airport. It took about an hour to find my family. Mom
still looked the same, just a bit older, perhaps because of the grey hair strands on her head.
'Hi mom.'
I waved my hand in the air to get their attention. I had glasses and a scarf wrapped on my head
to avoid public attention. When mom got to me she extended her arms but when her eyes
landed on my belly she stopped midway.
'You're pregnant. Where's the father? It's been years and you didn't bother to contact me nor tell
me you were pregnant. I mean you're only twenty two years old.'
'Mom.'
Dad just stood behind mom and gave me nothing but a smile. Still the same. Always the step
father and never my real dad. I guess he could only be a father to his biological son. I smiled at
him though.
'You got your fancy ass knocked up and forgot about us. I'm surprised you even remember how
we look.' Aliya said.
I rolled my eyes at her.
'Hey sister, who's that gorgeous little girl.' my brother asked, looking at Elena.
'She's so cute.'
Elena smiled.
'I finally met you all, I was starting to believe that fairy is an orphan.'
'Guys meet Elena. My Fairy Goddaughter.'
Horatio drove us back home. Aliya and Leo kept fighting like always. I thought they would have
grown out of it but they didn't. Elena was sitting on the window seat looking outside the window.
'Who are you pregnant for?'
I looked at Horatio who raised his brow at me when he noticed I was looking. He turned his
attention back to the road and I just relaxed into my seat.
'Mom, we'll talk during dinner time okay.' 'We have arrived madam.'
The car that my family's luggage pulled up after the one we were in.
'Enjoy your evening milady.'
'Thank you Horatio.'
'Welcome home mom. This is one of my penthouses.'
The aroma of the food filled the room. I remember the days I used to talk about this and mom
would say I dream too much and I should just be realistic. Now this was my reality.
The servants brought in the luggage. Erica, one of the servants smiled at me and waved a
picture of me sleeping in the air. I gave her a warning look and she giggled before shoving it in
her pocket.
We sat around the table and Erica laid out the food in front of us. As they passed dishes around
the table, Aliya began sharing stories about her social life as an influencer.
Elena was friendly towards my family and told them stories about how we met without
mentioning Thane nor his family. She even showed them the necklace I got her which made
Aliya pass on mean remarks. Well she was still as manipulative and sarcastic as she used to be
years ago. Nothing has changed.
Leo talked about his dream of joining the army which immediately erased the smile on my face.
Everyone stopped talking and looked at me. I couldn't even force the smile back on my face.
