Chapter 36 - Chapter 35: The Generations of Esau

This is the account of Esau, also called Edom. Esau took his wives from among the women of Canaan: Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite; Oholibamah, granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite; and Basemath, daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.

Adah bore him Eliphaz, Basemath bore him Reuel, and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were Esau's sons, born to him in the land of Canaan.

But as his household grew, Esau gathered his wives, sons, daughters, servants, flocks, herds, and all the goods he had gained in Canaan, and he departed to settle in a land far from his brother Jacob. The land could not sustain both brothers together, for their possessions were too great. So Esau dwelt in the hill country of Seir. He became the father of the Edomites.

The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, born of Adah, and Reuel, born of Basemath. Eliphaz had sons: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. Eliphaz also had a concubine, Timna, who bore him Amalek. Reuel's sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. From Oholibamah came Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.

These became the chiefs of Edom, each one a leader of clans: from Eliphaz came Chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; from Reuel came Chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; from Oholibamah came Chiefs Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. Thus were the chiefs descended from Esau.

The land of Seir was already inhabited by the Horites, and their chiefs were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. Lotan's sons were Hori and Homam, and Lotan's sister was Timna. Shobal's sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. Zibeon's sons were Aiah and Anah—the same Anah who discovered hot springs in the wilderness while tending the donkeys of his father. Anah's children were Dishon and Oholibamah. Dishon's sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. Ezer's sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. Dishan's sons were Uz and Aran. These were the Horite chiefs in Seir, listed according to their clans.

These also were the kings who ruled in Edom before Israel ever had a king: Bela son of Beor ruled in Dinhabah. After him, Jobab son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned. After Jobab came Husham of the land of the Temanites. Then Hadad son of Bedad, who struck down Midian in the fields of Moab, reigned from Avith. After him Samlah of Masrekah ruled, then Shaul of Rehoboth by the River, then Baal-Hanan son of Acbor. Last of all came Hadad, whose city was Pau, and his wife was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred, granddaughter of Mezahab.

These were the chiefs of Esau, listed by name, by their clans and settlements: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, Magdiel, and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, the land they possessed, the land of their father Esau, who is Edom.
