Chapter 147 - Chapter 146: The Boundaries of the Promised Land

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

"When the Israelites enter the land of Canaan, this will be the land that will belong to them — the inheritance that I have promised."

The Lord then described its boundaries clearly:

The southern border would run along part of the Desert of Zin, near the border of Edom. It would begin at the southern tip of the Salt Sea, cross south of Scorpion Pass, continue to Zin, and then go south of Kadesh Barnea. From there, it would pass through Hazar Addar, over to Azmon, and finally turn toward the Brook of Egypt, ending at the Mediterranean Sea.

The western border would simply be the coast of the Great Sea — the Mediterranean — marking the western edge of their land.

The northern border would begin at the Great Sea and run toward Mount Hor, continue to Lebo Hamath, then to Zedad, on to Ziphron, and end at Hazar Enan.

The eastern border would stretch from Hazar Enan down to Shepham, then descend to Riblah, east of Ain, following the slopes on the east side of the Sea of Kinnereth (the Sea of Galilee). From there, it would continue down the Jordan River and end again at the Salt Sea.

The Lord said, "This is the land, with all its boundaries, that I am giving you on every side."

Then Moses told the Israelites, "Divide this land by casting lots, just as the Lord has commanded. It will be given to nine and a half tribes, because the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh have already received their inheritance east of the Jordan River, near Jericho, toward the sunrise."

The Lord also said to Moses,

"These are the men who will oversee the division of the land: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.

Appoint one leader from each tribe to help in dividing the land."

The appointed leaders were:

Caleb son of Jephunneh from Judah,

Shemuel son of Ammihud from Simeon,

Elidad son of Kislon from Benjamin,

Bukki son of Jogli from Dan,

Hanniel son of Ephod from Manasseh,

Kemuel son of Shiphtan from Ephraim,

Elizaphan son of Parnach from Zebulun,

Paltiel son of Azzan from Issachar,

Ahihud son of Shelomi from Asher,

and Pedahel son of Ammihud from Naphtali.

These were the men the Lord commanded to divide the inheritance among the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
