When Joshua had grown old, the Lord spoke to him, saying, "You are now advanced in age, yet much of the land still remains unconquered." Then God listed the remaining territories — the regions of the Philistines and the Geshurites, from the Shihor River near Egypt up to Ekron in the north. These lands included the domains of the five Philistine rulers: Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as the area of the Avvites.
From the south lay the land of the Canaanites and the territory stretching to Aphek and the region of the Amorites. There was also the land of the Gebalites and all of Lebanon, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath. The Lord promised Joshua that He Himself would drive out these remaining nations, and instructed him to divide the land among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
The other half of Manasseh, together with the tribes of Reuben and Gad, had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan — the land Moses, the servant of the Lord, had given them. Their territory extended from Aroer by the Arnon Gorge through the plateau of Medeba to Dibon, and included all the towns of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon. It also covered Gilead, the land of the Geshurites and Maacathites, Mount Hermon, and all Bashan — the kingdom of Og, the last of the Rephaites.
Yet the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur and Maacah; they still lived among them to that day. To the Levites, however, Moses gave no land, for the offerings made to the Lord were their inheritance.
To the tribe of Reuben, their inheritance included Aroer by the Arnon Gorge, the town in the middle of the valley, and the plateau near Medeba — Heshbon and its surrounding towns, Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, and all the realm of Sihon. Balaam son of Beor, the sorcerer, was also slain in this land.
The tribe of Gad received Jazer, Gilead, half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer near Rabbah, and the valley towns of Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon — all the kingdom of Sihon, east of the Jordan.
Half the tribe of Manasseh received the land of Bashan, including the kingdom of Og and sixty towns of Jair, along with Ashtaroth and Edrei, royal cities of Og.
Thus, Moses gave these lands to the tribes while they were still in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho. But the Levites were given no inheritance of land — for the Lord, the God of Israel, Himself was their inheritance.
