Chapter 204 - Chapter 203: The Inheritance of the Levites and God’s Faithfulness

When the Israelites had settled in the land, the heads of the Levite families came to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of Israel at Shiloh. They said, "The Lord commanded through Moses that we be given towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock."

So, just as the Lord had said, the Israelites gave the Levites towns and their surrounding lands from their own inheritance.

The first lot fell to the Kohathites, descendants of Aaron the priest. They received thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. The rest of Kohath's descendants got ten towns from Ephraim, Dan, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

The Gershonites were given thirteen towns from Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. The Merarites received twelve towns from Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

From Judah and Simeon's lands, the priests—the descendants of Aaron—were given Hebron (a city of refuge), Libnah, Jattir, Eshtemoa, Holon, Debir, Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh, with their pasturelands—nine towns in all. From Benjamin they received Gibeon, Geba, Anathoth, and Almon—four towns. Altogether, the priests received thirteen towns.

The rest of the Kohathites received Shechem (a city of refuge), Gezer, Kibzaim, and Beth Horon from Ephraim; Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Aijalon, and Gath Rimmon from Dan; and Taanach and Gath Rimmon from half of Manasseh—ten towns in total.

The Gershonites received from half of Manasseh Golan in Bashan (a city of refuge) and Be Eshtarah; from Issachar—Kishion, Daberath, Jarmuth, and En Gannim; from Asher—Mishal, Abdon, Helkath, and Rehob; and from Naphtali—Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge), Hammoth Dor, and Kartan—thirteen towns in total.

The Merarites received from Zebulun—Jokneam, Kartah, Dimnah, and Nahalal; from Reuben—Bezer, Jahaz, Kedemoth, and Mephaath; and from Gad—Ramoth in Gilead (a city of refuge), Mahanaim, Heshbon, and Jazer—twelve towns in all.

In total, the Levites received forty-eight towns throughout Israel, each surrounded by pastureland.

And so the Lord gave Israel all the land He had promised their ancestors. They took possession and lived in it. The Lord gave them rest on every side—not one of their enemies could stand against them, for He handed them all over.

Every single promise the Lord made to Israel was fulfilled. Not one failed.
