Chapter 24 - The Rooftop at 2 A.M.

The rooftop was cold.

The kind of cold that made thoughts sharper. Quieter.

Lina stepped out of the stairwell with slow, uncertain steps. Her long black coat clung to her frame, shielding her from the wind. Her hair, ink-dark in the moonlight, danced across her face.

Kael was already there.

Back to her. Arms resting on the metal railing. City lights glinting behind him like a sea of broken stars.

He didn't turn when he spoke.

"You came."

Lina's voice was softer than usual, but steady. "You asked."

A pause.

"I wasn't sure you would," he admitted.

She walked to stand beside him, not too close. Not yet. "Neither was I."

For a while, they didn't speak.

The wind did.

The sound of sirens in the distance did.

But they… simply stood.

Then Kael broke the silence.

"I don't like watching people get hurt."

"You watch me get hurt every day," Lina whispered.

He finally turned to her, slowly. His gaze wasn't cold tonight. It was heavy. Like he was carrying something.

"I'm trying not to," he said.

Lina looked away. "Why?"

Kael hesitated.

Then he said, "Because if I don't protect you… I'll want to burn the world for what it did."

"You don't even know everything I've been through," Lina said quietly.

"I don't need to," Kael said. "I see it in your eyes."

She laughed, but it cracked. "Everyone sees my pain, Kael. That's the easy part. No one ever stays long enough to understand it."

"I'm not leaving."

Her voice shook. "You say that now."

Kael took one slow step closer. "Then tell me to leave."

Lina turned, eyes wide.

She couldn't.

And he knew it.

He smiled faintly. "Didn't think so."

---

Her heart was loud in her ears. So loud, she thought it would drown everything out.

Then Kael pulled something from his pocket.

A tiny earpiece.

He handed it to her.

"Put this in tomorrow. It links to me."

She frowned. "Why?"

"In case anyone tries anything again," he said. "You can pretend it's a comms device for the set. But I'll be listening."

She stared at it.

At him.

At the world he was pulling her into.

"You're dangerous," she whispered.

"I never claimed to be safe," Kael replied.

Later, when she returned to her apartment, she couldn't sleep.

Not because of anxiety.

But because part of her… didn't want to.

Something had shifted tonight.

Kael was still terrifying. Still unreadable.

But for the first time, Lina felt the door to something dangerous—and beautiful—open just a crack.

And she wasn't sure she wanted to close it.
