Chapter Forty-One: Silk and Silence
"Isabelle, relax! Don't cause a scene…it's not worth it…" Maxx tried to reason with her.
But the cameras lit up the golden hall again. Reporters were basically drowning in the grand entrance like fish drawn to bait…
They were speaking louder, full of straight questions that needed to be answered.
"Mr. Kraus! Who is the lady on your arm?"
"Why couldn't Isabelle make it with you tonight?"
"Are you officially separated?"
Reign didn't answer. His jaw was tightened harder than before. His hand rested lightly at the woman's back, but his eyes were already looking for Isabelle through the crowd.
The woman smiled at the cameras and leaned in to speak. "Oh, we're just old friends," she said cheerfully. "Isabelle's fine with us attending together. She had other plans, I suppose."
That lie came through the ballroom like a dropped plate.
Isabelle was just a few feet away, with a new glass in hand, her eyes just glared at the woman's lips.
