Chapter Forty-Nine: The Secret Phone Call
Isabelle peeked one eye open as the nurse walked out of the room.
Another nurse poked her head in. "Still unconscious?" she whispered.
"Deep sleep," the other whispered back. "Like a pretty statue."
They both giggled and closed the door softly behind them.
Once the door was closed and finally shut, Isabelle sighed and carefully reached under her pillow.
Her fingers fumbled for a moment until they wrapped around her phone. She slid it out with the grace of a raccoon stealing snacks in the night.
She dialed Benjamin's number, lowering the volume in case a machine beeped too loud.
It rang twice before his familiar voice answered.
"Isabelle?" His voice sounded tight and more worried than it usually would. "Are you okay?"
She blinked slowly, smiling at the sound of his voice. "Hi, Ben."
"Don't 'Hi, Ben' me. I saw the news. The crash. What happened? Are you hurt?"
