Chapter 46 - Eyes Never Fail

Mo Seris did not think much of Mo Yiren. In his eyes, the assistant steward was a decrepit, old man who had given up on life. Mo Yiren had no ambitions, only living to serve the Sixth Steward with every breath.

Walking in, it was clear that the pile of documents on Mo Yiren's desk was more thankless work coming from the top. And yet, Mo Yiren completed it like a good little worker.

A man like this was no different from a slave.

Now, seeing the change of face from the old assistant steward, Mo Seris could not help but feel disgust. Who was Mo Yiren smiling for, with that ugly, wrinkled face?

"I could sense that there was something different about the Song child from a glance," Mo Seris said, responding to the question. "It was clear that the Song manager wanted to sell it at a high price, but I managed to bargain him down substantially."

"What was he asking for?" Mo Yiren said. His smile dimmed slightly from Mo Seris's answer. "And how did the initial testing go? What was the verdict of the medicine man? An immortal fate?"

"The Song man did not discern an immortal fate," Mo Seris said. "But it was clear that the medicine man could hardly see what was plainly in front of him. To tell the truth, I would be worried if he had found an immortal fate."

Mo Yiren stared at Mo Seris. He was no longer smiling. "If I am not wrong, that medicine man would be Song Kiro?"

"I did not ask for his name."

"To handle the child of the Manager, it surely would be Song Kiro." Mo Yiren frowned. "It is strange that you would have such an opinion of him. After all, he is a man who has high esteem among the medicinal circles in the town."

Mo Seris was slightly taken aback. He had not expected Mo Yiren to be so well informed of minor people in lower families. However, Mo Seris quickly recovered.

"If he has a reputation to protect, I am even less surprised. After all, he could find nothing from his testing - and he announced that the baby was completely ordinary. Now, take one hard look at this child, and tell me that you believe it is ordinary."

Mo Yiren peered into the cradle. Clearly, the child was exhibiting unusual levels of activity. "Has it been moving for all this time?"

"It has."

"Then…it is clearly unusual," Mo Yiren admitted. However, his enthusiasm had waned. Whether the child was useful still needed to be determined, but it felt less and less probable. He was beginning to feel that the infant was all 'flash' and no substance.

Mo Seris could see that Mo Yiren's attitude had taken a sharp turn for the worse. Mo Seris did not like the wrinkled smile, but that was only because it was ugly. It did not mean that he did not want to see it!

After all, what it represented was clear. Mo Yiren was Mo Lidor's clear second-in-command. Gaining the trust of one was the surest way to gain the trust of the other!

He hurriedly spoke, "My eyes never fail me! If a medicine man can say that this is normal behavior for a child, then I can only say that the medicine man is lacking, not the child! My trust with experts has a limit, and it is when I can clearly see the truth for myself!"

Mo Yiren was far from convinced. His face wrinkled further, as he thought over the situation. "So, there is no immortal fate, but the delivery is clearly unusual. It is also true that the methods of lower families are lacking. So, how much did you pay for this strange delivery, then?"
