Chapter 15 - The Screening Room

The bright fluorescents of the conference hall buzzed softly overhead, casting a sterile glow over the rows of chairs and folding tables where the candidates had gathered. It was early morning, but the air already carried a mixture of anticipation, nerves, and quiet determination. Some sat upright with carefully practiced composure, others fidgeted with their forms, eyes flickering toward the entrance every few minutes.

Tunde Iroko stood at the front, flanked by Mrs. Adisa and Dr. Adewale, all three dressed in formal attire, a visible contrast to the sea of uniforms, scrubs, and casual wear worn by the applicants.

"This is the beginning," Tunde announced clearly, his voice cutting through the murmurs. "Not just of a selection process, but of a responsibility that will require heart, strength, and honesty."

The Vetting Panel

Behind the scenes, the vetting panel had been assembled carefully over weeks. Alongside the Governor, the family lawyer, and Mama Iroko's doctor, there was a psychologist, Mrs. Eze, brought in to observe the candidates' emotional intelligence and resilience. Also present were representatives from caregiving organizations and trusted members of the community with experience in elder care.

Each panelist had a unique role, but their goal was unified: to find someone who could not only care for Mama Iroko's physical needs but to become a steadfast companion, a trustworthy presence in her final years.

Mrs. Adisa opened the thick manila folder marked "Applicants." Inside were hundreds of resumes, letters of recommendation, certificates, and personal essays. The response to the public call had been overwhelming thousands from across the city and beyond.

The Applicants Arrive

Eight candidates had been shortlisted for the next phase, and they now sat nervously in the waiting area, each a story unto themselves.

There was:

Titi, a seasoned nurse with years of experience in geriatrics, known for her patience and quiet empathy.

Joy, a caregiver with a background in social work, whose gentle spirit belied a fierce dedication to her patients.

Remi, a confident young doctor with a sharp mind and sharper ambition.

Chika, a nurse known for her rigorous discipline and professionalism.

Cynthia, a caregiver with a troubled past, trying to rebuild her life through service.

Farouk, a calm and reflective therapist who believed deeply in the healing power of listening.

Idowu, a pragmatic nurse with a no-nonsense attitude.

Baba Kareem, an elder caregiver with decades of experience and a reputation for wisdom.

Each sat alone, reviewing notes or rehearsing responses, their thoughts heavy with the knowledge that only one or perhaps two would be chosen.

The First Impressions

Tunde surveyed the room as the candidates filed in. His eyes lingered briefly on each face, searching for signs beyond the professional resumes. The stakes were too high for surface-level decisions.

Mrs. Adisa handed out confidentiality agreements, emphasizing the importance of discretion.

"This process will test more than your skills," Mrs. Eze added with a soft but firm voice. "It will test your character."

The Screening Begins

The day's agenda was intense. First came written assessments scenarios requiring ethical judgment, problem-solving, and responses to crisis situations. Then individual interviews, each candidate asked to recount a time they faced hardship and how they overcame it.

Titi spoke calmly about caring for a dementia patient whose family had abandoned her. Joy shared a story of working in a shelter and comforting children traumatized by loss.

Remi's answers were precise, sometimes clinical, while Cynthia's brought an emotional vulnerability that made the panelists sit up and take notice.

Observations Behind the Scenes

Mrs. Eze noted subtle things: the way Farouk's gaze never wavered from the interviewer, the slight tremble in Chika's hands when asked about a personal loss, Idowu's curt tone masking a deep well of compassion.

Baba Kareem sat quietly, his answers peppered with wisdom and humility. When asked about loyalty, he simply said, "It is not a word; it is a way of life."

A Tense Lunch Break

The candidates mingled during lunch, some forming tentative friendships, others eyeing each other with quiet rivalry.

Titi found herself talking with Joy, their shared respect deepening.

"I never imagined this would be so much more than just a job interview," Joy admitted, stirring her tea.

Titi nodded. "Neither did I. But this… this feels like a calling."

Farouk approached them, adding, "Caregiving is not just science. It's heart."

The conversation was cut short by a sudden announcement over the PA: the candidates were to return to the hall for the next phase.

The Emotional Test

The afternoon was designed to reveal how candidates handled pressure. A staged emergency was set up a simulated fall and injury scenario with a volunteer actor.

Some candidates reacted with visible panic; others remained composed, demonstrating quick thinking and calm care.

Joy and Titi worked together instinctively, coordinating to comfort the "injured" actor while alerting the "doctor."

Chika's clinical detachment drew criticism for lack of warmth, while Cynthia's tears in the moment showed a capacity for empathy but raised questions about emotional control.

The Panel's Deliberation

As the candidates left the room for a short break, the panelists convened to discuss impressions.

Dr. Adewale spoke first. "Titi and Joy demonstrate both skill and heart. They understand care as a partnership."

Mrs. Adisa nodded. "But we must also consider resilience under scrutiny. The media storm is coming."

Mrs. Eze added, "Emotional stability is as crucial as technical skill. Cynthia is promising, but may need support."

Tunde looked at the notes, then at the empty chairs where decisions would soon be made. "We are seeking a guardian not just a nurse. Loyalty must be absolute."

The Final Selection

By day's end, a shortlist of five was announced to advance to the next phase. The air was thick with relief and disappointment.

Titi and Joy stood together, their bond strengthened by shared trials. They exchanged a glance, a silent promise to face what was next.

As the Candidates Departed

Outside, the city's hum was distant but ever-present. The candidates stepped into a world where loyalty, trust, and care would be tested not just in a room but in the heart of the Iroko legacy.

Tunde watched from the window, a quiet determination settling in his eyes.

The loyalty game had only just begun.
