Jin Mingcheng hurried into the room, his face clouded with anger, as if a storm was brewing inside him. Fang Zhiyan looked at him with feigned bewilderment.
"Director Jin, what brings you here?" Fang Zhiyan called out as Jin Mingcheng drew closer.
"Reckless!" Jin Mingcheng replied, shouting before Fang Zhiyan could finish his sentence. He pointed at him and began to berate him.
"Do you realize what you're doing?" Jin continued. "Using an endoscope to retrieve a bottle cap? If the esophageal lining gets scratched, you'll have to open the chest to stop the bleeding. As a doctor, have you not reflected on your actions? I was barely upstairs managing another patient when you decided to act on your own?"
Fang Zhiyan found the situation amusing. If he didn't know Jin Mingcheng was purposefully trying to create trouble for him, he might have thought Jin was genuinely concerned.
After his outburst, Jin Mingcheng took a breath, and finally, Xu Qiushuang seized the chance to speak. "Excuse me, doctor?" she asked.
"Are you a relative of the patient?" Jin Mingcheng interjected, spotting Xu Qiushuang beside him, contemplating how to steer the family's anger towards Fang Zhiyan.
"Do you understand? Fang Zhiyan is merely an intern. He led you to the endoscopy room, putting you at risk! Our hospital's endoscopy technology is still in early development, and many doctors are barely familiar with the techniques. What if something went wrong?"
Xu Qiushuang looked at him quizzically. Her brother had waited in the emergency room for ages without receiving treatment. Finally, Dr. Fang intervened and quickly retrieved the bottle cap from his throat. Now, out of nowhere, this director was slandering Dr. Fang?
Perhaps Fang Zhiyan was upsetting certain interests.
Xu Qiushuang pursed her lips and then took the bottle cap from Fang Zhiyan. "Director, I get what you're saying," she started. "But the problem is, the cap has already been removed."
She raised her hand, revealing the bottle cap.
"Nonsense!" Jin Mingcheng reflexively cursed but froze upon laying eyes on the cap.
No way? He really did it? He got it out?
For a moment, Jin Mingcheng was dumbfounded. Is this even possible? That location, that cap—how is this possible?
His face was one of utter disbelief. He stared at the cap and then at Fang Zhiyan, his brows knitting together. Eventually, he huffed and turned to leave. The patient was saved; his presence as the emergency director was pointless now. He initially intended to use ten minutes to throw Fang Zhiyan into a crisis and find a reason to dismiss him from his internship early. But to think Fang managed to extricate the cap in under ten minutes! Lucky for him, indeed!
Jin Mingcheng's face was full of resentment as he left.
Fang Zhiyan turned back to Xu Qiushuang. "Your brother's cap is out, but he'll need to be observed in the hospital for a while. Dr. Cui will handle the follow-up. No need to worry."
Xu Qiushuang nodded gratefully, looking at Fang Zhiyan.
Fang Zhiyan, just an intern, headed back to the emergency room. Meanwhile, this entire scene played out under Xue Shan's watchful eyes. He reported everything to Luo Dongqiang.
Luo Dongqiang could only spend nights here watching over his daughter, given his night shift schedule. It just so happened he ran into Fang Zhiyan.
When hearing about Fang Zhiyan's procedure, Luo Dongqiang was quite surprised. Next to him, Tang Ya remarked, "Seems this Fang Zhiyan does have some skill. Our daughter must have been saved by him."
"Aren't you going to show some gratitude?" Tang Ya suggested.
Luo Dongqiang nodded thoughtfully and, after a moment, gestured to Xue Shan. "Go and bring Fang Zhiyan over."
Xue Shan complied and quickly turned away.
Meanwhile, Fang Zhiyan returned to his emergency room. Upon his return, nurse Shen Qingyue whispered, "Dr. Fang, be careful. Director Jin is quite upset. You saving that patient likely displeased him."
"How odd," Fang Zhiyan mused. "I save a patient, and the doctors are unhappy."
Shen Qingyue blinked at Fang Zhiyan. Seeing he wasn't bothered, she returned to her tasks.
Entering the office, Fang Zhiyan encountered Dr. Gu Tao, who previously snatched credit from him. Now, Gu Tao was glaring menacingly at him.
"Is there something you need?" Fang Zhiyan asked calmly. His benign demeanor and gentle voice made Gu Tao feel like he was striking cotton.
Gu Tao stepped forward, attempting to intimidate Fang Zhiyan with his height, only to find Fang Zhiyan stood taller.
Coughing to mask his embarrassment, Gu Tao spoke in a malicious tone, "You're Fang Zhiyan, right?"
"That's me. What can I help you with?" Fang Zhiyan replied.
Gu Tao grabbed his collar to threaten him, but before he could utter a word, a shadow appeared at the door, and Xue Shan entered.
"Which one is Dr. Fang Zhiyan? Please come with me to the ward."
Gu Tao's face slightly changed, instinctively releasing Fang Zhiyan's collar.
"That's me," Fang Zhiyan responded, raising his hand. After Xue Shan acknowledged him, Fang Zhiyan turned to Gu Tao.
"Dr. Gu, I'm unclear why you're grabbing my collar. Are you trying to hit me?"
"Of course not," Gu Tao replied through clenched teeth, patting Fang Zhiyan's clothes. "I thought your shirt was dirty; I wanted to straighten it."
"Well, then I have to thank you," Fang Zhiyan said with a smile. "If there's nothing else, would you mind letting go?"
Gu Tao hurriedly released his grip, a hint of awkwardness coloring his face.
Fang Zhiyan paid him no mind, walking directly to Xue Shan. "Which ward?"
"Please follow me," Xue Shan respectfully led Fang Zhiyan to a private room.
Fang Zhiyan raised an eyebrow, realizing this was an opportunity. This is the highlight!
Upon entering, a middle-aged couple sat inside, and the patient he rescued, a young girl, lay on the bed. Fang Zhiyan quickly approached, "How's the patient doing?"
Luo Yun, now awake, lay on the bed, curiously observing Fang Zhiyan before her. The voice in her memory that had saved her started to align with the man's.
She blinked, growing increasingly curious.
"Did you save my daughter?" Luo Dongqiang asked.
Fang Zhiyan hesitated momentarily before nodding. "Yes, that was me."
