AT THE SAME TIME

I stood close to the window, watching Mei Shen's quiet figure bathed in flickering candlelight, when a small tug at my robe pulled me back to the present.
"Huan?" I turned to see my son's wide, curious eyes looking up at me.
"Papa." He said softly, voice hesitant. "Mei Feng is in the palace."
My heart tightened.
"You saw her?"I asked.
He nodded solemnly, clutching his wooden horse.
"She came with the white haired man."He said.
Zeyrith. The god himself. I knelt down to meet Huan's gaze, trying to keep my voice calm.
"Did Mei Shen say anything?"I asked.
Huan shook his head.
"She looked… angry. And sad."He said.
A cold wave washed over me. That mixture, anger and sadness was all too familiar. I placed a firm hand on Huan's shoulder.
"Thank you for telling me, little one. Stay close to your mother, okay?"I asked.
