After Clark arrived in Tokyo, a massive tail suddenly emerged from the waters of Tokyo Bay. JXS roughly estimated the tail to be about 20 meters long.
Its appearance sparked panic among many coastal households in Tokyo. No one knew what kind of creature this tail belonged to—or whether it had the ability to come ashore. And if it did… most people didn't even want to imagine what would happen next.
"Mommy, will Ultraman show up and fight the monster?" a child on the beach asked his mother after seeing the monstrous tail.
"He… He will, right?" the mother, having never seen a real monster before, answered uncertainly. She knew America had a powerful Avengers team, but wasn't sure if Japan had anything like that.
"Run—RUN! The monster is coming this way!" someone nearby suddenly shouted. The woman looked up and saw crowds fleeing in all directions. She turned toward the sea just in time to see that massive tail inching closer to shore.
Without thinking, she scooped up her child and ran.
Scenes like this played out all along the visible coastline. After all, even a fool could understand: while it wasn't clear whether the creature could come ashore, if it stayed near the coast, no one would even dare go near the water. No one even knew if tomorrow would bring sunshine or death.
Clark and the others had landed at Narita International Airport in Chiba, about 65 kilometers east of central Tokyo, because their flight was international. So although they had arrived in Tokyo, they couldn't feel the tension or witness the panic caused by the creature's tail.
But what they couldn't feel in person, they saw clearly on live television—broadcasting the entire situation in real time.
"Banner, I'm going to check things out. Get there as soon as you can," Clark said. While he wasn't particularly fond of Japan, he couldn't just ignore a monster attack.
After all, unless the creature was intelligent, it would act purely on instinct—and a densely populated city like Tokyo was a perfect hunting ground.
"Alright, you go ahead. I'll find a car and head over myself," Banner replied. Seeing the situation unfold on TV, he knew only Clark could get there quickly. So when Clark ditched him, Banner wasn't the least bit surprised.
After speaking to Banner, Clark turned to Diana:"You coming with me?"
Diana simply nodded. "I'll go with you."
Clark nodded back. Then, in the blink of an eye, his outfit transformed. Moments later, people nearby watched as a man with a red cape and an "S" on his chest, holding a beautiful woman in his arms, soared into the sky.
"It's Superman!" someone shouted.
As soon as Clark took off, everyone in the vicinity recognized who he was. After all, while plenty of people around the world cosplay as Superman, none of them can actually fly. So once Clark was airborne, anyone familiar with the name "Superman" instantly knew it was him.
"Superman is here! That monster's dead meat!"
"Oh my god, I saw Superman in person!"
"He was standing right next to me!"
...
"Wait… why can't I remember what he looked like?"
People arriving at or leaving the airport couldn't help but sigh in awe as they watched Superman vanish into the sky. For most Japanese people, Superman was no different from a movie character—someone who only lived on screen. So to witness him in real life was an experience that shook them.
Meanwhile, Banner—who had just escaped the frenzy stirred up by Clark's sudden appearance—wiped the sweat from his brow and glanced at the heart monitor on his wrist. It had spiked to over 150 bpm. He shut his eyes and took a few deep breaths to calm down.
"He almost came out…" Banner muttered. When Clark had taken off, the crowd had surged like crazed fans chasing a celebrity, nearly trampling Banner in the process.
Thankfully, Banner had gotten much better at controlling his emotions. This small disturbance wasn't enough to trigger a transformation anymore. (Especially when you consider in Thor: Ragnarok, Banner nearly fell to his death and still didn't transform—well… he might have died.)
Despite the chaos at Narita Airport, Clark soared through the air carrying Diana, heading straight for central Tokyo. Even though Clark was powerful, the 60+ kilometer distance meant he couldn't instantly track all activity in Tokyo.
But that didn't matter—Clark knew once he reached Tokyo Bay, he'd find the monster. Yes, Clark's mission was to capture it.
He and Banner had previously discussed this creature, and Banner had revealed that it was one of the targets of his trip to Tokyo. Plus, Clark figured Tony would be very interested in this thing.
Clark even thought to himself:If the creature is tame and good-looking, maybe I could keep it. Other people have cats and dogs… rich folks might own a leopard or tiger—but they usually end up dead. But if I had a 100-foot-long monster as a pet? That'd be amazing.
"Found it!"
Upon reaching the city center, Clark spotted the creature descending onto land.
The monster looked… strange. Its head was disproportionately small, something like a mix between a lizard and a snake. Its large, oval-shaped body had a pair of thin legs on either side, and a long tail trailing behind. It had no scales, but its skin was rougher than an alligator's—its back was lined with barbed, thorn-like protrusions.
In short, no matter the angle, it was ugly.
Even worse, as it moved, gill-like slits on either side of its body oozed some kind of fluid onto the ground. It looked disgusting—and gave the impression that if it kept leaking like this, it might actually die.
"Forget it. This thing's too gross—I'll just kill it."
Clearly, the creature's appearance turned Clark off completely. He gave up any ideas of taming it.
After gently setting Diana down on a safe rooftop, Clark flew into the air directly above the monster. His right hand began to glow with a golden light—he was ready to end this revolting beast with one punch.
