It could only be said that this skeletal giant lizard reacted quickly, knowing to use its tail to counterattack. But under Clark's assault, this was nothing more than a futile struggle.
Faced with the skeletal giant lizard's tail—over 200 meters long—Clark did not choose to dodge. Instead, he swung his fist at the section of the tail that was over 20 meters in length.
"Ahhh~~!!!"
With the giant skeletal lizard's howl, the massive tail blocking Clark's path was smashed in half with one punch. After losing its balance, the skeletal giant lizard, now left with only two limbs, instantly toppled to the ground.
However, the fall of the giant skeletal lizard did not mark the end of Clark's offensive. After breaking its tail, Clark charged straight through the rain of blood, his body shining with golden light, and arrived before the creature.
Although the lizard's skull covering made it impossible for Clark to see its eyes, he imagined that in its gaze there was either fear or ferocity. Regardless of which it was, both would be met with the golden glow of Clark's next punch.
Then, in the skeletal giant lizard's fearful eyes, Clark smashed his fist into its skull.
Boom!
As Clark's punch landed, the entire Skull Island shook violently. Even the storm surrounding the island's borders seemed ready to collapse under the force of his blow.
Clark wasn't fully aware of these external changes, but he could still feel the tremors beneath him.
"Hm, looks like you overdid it," he muttered, looking at the half-bodied skeletal lizard before him and another nearby one that had collapsed from the aftershock of his strike. He could sense the island's precarious condition.
"Uh!" While considering how to remedy the situation, Clark noticed the trident embedded in the underground chamber of Skull Island suddenly light up. Immediately after, the surrounding seawater began to swirl and rotate rapidly.
As the trident reacted, Clark saw the island's tremors gradually subside. The storms gathered around the sea's edge also began to stabilize along with the trident's movement. Even though it wasn't yet time for the island to seal itself, faint illusory visions began to appear in the skies above the island.
"May, what do we do? Skull Island looks like it's suddenly shutting down!" Simmons, inside the airborne bus, felt a jolt of tension as he saw the distant storm gradually fading.
"Let's go down and find Coulson and the others," May decided after a brief hesitation. Without further worrying about the island's monsters, she piloted the plane downwards.
Once calm returned, the trident before Clark also quieted. But moments later, its glow seemed dimmer than before, as if weakened by the earlier disturbance. The surrounding water currents had noticeably decreased since the trident's activation.
Frowning, Clark realized he might have been mistaken earlier — perhaps the skeletal giant lizards were not meant to guard the trident at all.
After all, if they were its protectors, the trident would have been kept secured, not functioning as it did now — stabilizing Skull Island's spatial integrity.
This led Clark to suspect the trident was, in fact, the core of Skull Island itself. Whether for the island's internal space seal or its external defenses, some central power source was necessary.
He guessed that this trident was likely the key to controlling Skull Island. To test his theory, Clark stepped forward, reaching out his right hand toward the now-dim trident.
The moment his hand touched the watery barrier around it, the water spun violently, hurling his hand away.
"What?!"
Clark glanced at his slightly numb right hand. Although the sensation quickly faded thanks to his powerful healing ability, the fact that it had happened at all startled him. Even a missile's direct hit wouldn't normally cause him this kind of numbness — yet this thin layer of water had deflected him so forcefully.
He now understood why the skeletal giant lizards guarded the trident's side without ever trying to move it: it wasn't that they didn't want to — they couldn't.
Aside from their skull-covered heads, the rest of their bodies were not particularly well-armored. A barrier strong enough to fling back Clark could very well strip the flesh from their bones.
But just because the barrier could repel his hand didn't mean he was powerless. Since Clark had only recently activated his Solar Flare Mode in battle, he still retained more than half of its stored energy.
So, facing the trident, he reactivated his Solar Flare Mode and plunged his hand into the swirling water barrier.
The barrier's rotation sped up instantly, its emitted force increasing sharply. Clark could tell that under this pressure, even a solid titanium rod would be twisted into a corkscrew.
But titanium rods were not Clark's arms. With Solar Flare Mode active, his defenses were vastly enhanced — and, beyond his physical toughness, he was cloaked in an energy sheath.
The water's force dissipated against this energy shield, leaving his arm unharmed. With his right hand, he firmly grasped the golden serpent-shaped trident.
With one strong pull, Clark tore the trident from the earth.
The instant it was removed, the surrounding water barrier collapsed and vanished. Holding the trident, Clark suddenly felt as if he was the ocean, and the ocean was him. With it, he believed he could command all the seas on Earth.
Actually, the trident's power was nowhere near that great — the ability to control the entire ocean was just Clark's illusion. In truth, holding it allowed him to command only the waters within a 100-kilometer radius. Even so, that was still astonishing.
For comparison, when Poseidon himself wielded it, he could control only about 60 kilometers. Clark's greater range was entirely due to the immense energy output of his Solar Flare Mode.
With the trident in hand, Clark confirmed his earlier suspicion — the skeletal giant lizards weren't there to protect it. On the contrary, the trident's very existence was meant to suppress them, and indeed all the monsters on Skull Island.
To keep these creatures from escaping, Poseidon had created an isolated sea region. The storms and mists at its borders were meant to keep innocent people from wandering in, and he had even sealed off the surrounding space to hide it from the outside world.
To maintain these arrangements, Poseidon left his Sea God Trident on the island. While it was powerful, its abilities overlapped heavily with his own — Poseidon didn't need it to control the sea, and it could only function on Earth.
For a Greek god who was actually an alien, this limitation made the weapon less useful. With Earth only a week's journey from Olympus, it wasn't his main base of operations.
Thus, Poseidon left the trident behind as both the eye and the power source of the island's barriers.
Clark didn't know exactly why Poseidon had sealed the island, but he agreed with the decision. If skeletal giant lizards roamed free in human society, even modern weaponry might not be enough to stop them without catastrophic consequences.
Having learned all this, Clark quietly returned the trident to its original place. To him, its power to control water was of little use — its destructive potential was far less than his own, and removing it would eventually collapse the barriers keeping the island hidden.
Between keeping the island concealed and holding a weapon of little value to him, Clark made the obvious choice.
However, before returning it, he canceled its space-locking function. That way, even if the island sealed itself again, he could reach it through a portal — allowing him to one day transport people and resources here for development.
Once the trident was back in place, the water barrier reappeared, slowly rotating once more to protect it from outside interference.
With the island's origins understood, Clark had completed half his mission. The other half was to clear the remaining skeletal giant lizards in the underground caverns.
By his estimation, there were only about thirty left, with just two being of significant size — both easily manageable in his normal mode. The only difficulty was that they were scattered, meaning he would have to hunt them down one by one.
On the surface, Coulson and Diana, hidden under the canopy of trees, were still collecting samples, unaware that the distant storm wall was fading away.
Fitz and Simmons, guided by May, had left the landed plane with weapons to find Coulson's group.
In truth, Skull Island wasn't extremely dangerous as long as you avoided the skeletal giant lizards — especially within Kong's territory, where entrances to the underground world were rare.
"I've picked up their signal," Fitz said excitedly, operating the device in his hands as a signal appeared on the display.
Since they didn't know Coulson's exact location, May had been relying on tracking signs of their passage. A direct wireless connection would be far better.
"Can you reach them?" May asked quickly.
"I'll try," Fitz replied, increasing the device's transmission frequency before calling out.
"Coulson, can you hear me? It's Fitz."
After several repetitions, Coulson's voice finally crackled back through the device.
"Fitz, got it — it's Coulson. What's going on?"
Taking the communicator from Fitz, May said, "Coulson, something's happened. We might need to head back early. I'm right behind you."
"Alright then. We'll head back to you now."
Though Coulson didn't know the details, he trusted May wouldn't joke about such matters. Even though their mission wasn't fully complete, he decisively ordered a retreat.
After a short trek back, Coulson spotted May and Fitz.
