Chapter 46 - When the Void Marches

High above the crystalline trees of the sanctuary, the sky ripped open—a spiral of black and purple tearing through reality like paper. From that rift, a wave of shadows poured out—this time, not scouts.

This was an army.

Dozens of voidspawn descended like ink-streaked meteors, their forms ever-shifting—limbs expanding, twisting, splitting into wings or claws or whips of shadow. The light beneath the trees flickered with each one's presence.

And at their center, far larger and shaped like a jagged horned knight cloaked in swirling darkness, hovered their commander—watching. Waiting.

Below, the sanctuary bell tolled for the first time in centuries.

BONG. BONG. BONG.

Its sound resonated across the valley.

Kai, halfway through his daily focus meditation near the resonance lake, stood up fast. The Omnitrix was already glowing, blinking faster than ever.

Lira raced toward him, breath short. Her eyes were wide, not with fear— but with readiness.

"They've come in force," she said. "The northern perimeter is collapsing."

Kai didn't hesitate.

"Then let's hold the line."

Kai and Lira arrived at the breach site alongside dozens of resonance warriors—elders, windblades, crystalbinders. Some took flight, others merged with tree canopies, all glowing with soft internal light.

The rift burned like a wound in the sky.

Then, the first impact.

Ten voidspawn slammed into the ground, creating black shockwaves that turned nearby plants to ash. A roar—inhuman and electric—echoed from the commander hovering high above.

Kai: It's time to cook.

-Beep.

Kai slammed the Omnitrix.

A flash of green light—

XLR8 emerged, and Kai vanished in a blur.

He zipped through the battlefield, sweeping elders out of the way as tendrils shot from the voidspawn like spears. He dodged, twisted, and slammed into their chests with supersonic kicks.

Then a tendril hit him square in the ribs—sending him flying into a crystal tree.

Kai gasped, rolled to his feet.

Switched.

- Beep.

Humungousaur roared into existence, catching an entire voidspawn in mid-air and slamming it into the ground with seismic force. But three more were already leaping for him.

He ducked, lifted the Omnitrix—

"Let's try something smarter."

-Beep.

As Humungousaur shrank, his body refracted into gleaming crystal.

Kai became Lumacite, hands glowing, energy pulsing like a heartbeat.

"Time to change the tempo."

With a motion of his arms, Kai released a shock pulse tuned to void energy—a wave of harmonic resonance that disassembled two voidspawn mid-leap.

Lira appeared beside him, panting. Her arm bled, but her blade was still glowing.

"The commander is above the breach. If we don't take it down, they'll never stop coming."

Kai nodded.

"You hold the center. I'll go high."

Lira hesitated.

"Be careful."

Kai smirked.

"I'll bring back a souvenir."

Using the crystalline windspires, Kai launched himself upward—his light form propelling with bursts of resonance.

The commander was massive—eight meters tall, with a warhammer forged from black voidstuff and eyes that glowed like collapsing stars.

As Kai approached, the commander finally spoke.

"W̶e̴ ̷s̶e̶e̷ ̷y̵o̷u̴,̴ ̶c̸o̶n̵d̵u̷i̶t̴.̴ ̴Y̷o̷u̷ ̶s̷h̸o̸u̵l̴d̵ ̶n̴o̶t̶ ̶e̶x̷i̴s̷t̵.̷"̵

Kai launched a radiant pulse—but the commander absorbed it, swinging the warhammer down.

Kai dodged mid-air, spinning and launching multiple pulses in succession. Some were deflected, others missed—but one hit the commander's left shoulder, cracking the void plating.

It screamed—not in pain, but in annoyance.

"You… will be extracted. Studied. Broken."

"I've been called worse," Kai muttered.

The sky became a blur of shadow and light as they fought—pulses and hammer strikes clashing mid-air like lightning storms.

Meanwhile, Lira was struggling.

A massive voidspawn—larger than the rest—charged the central crystal where several civilians hid. She leapt in front of it, sending wind blades toward its face.

They barely slowed it.

She tried to dodge—too late.

A claw struck her across the chest, sending her crashing into the dirt.

She coughed, trying to rise.

The voidspawn raised its claw again.

"KAI!" she cried.

From the sky, like a meteor—

BOOM!

Lumacite crashed down, sending a wave of energy that vaporized the attacker just inches from her.

Kai turned to her, panting.

"You okay?"

Lira groaned. "I've had better mornings."

He offered his hand, helping her up.

"Stay behind me."

The sky began to darken further—the rift growing.

More voidspawn crept through.

Kai stood in the middle of the battlefield, surrounded.

He closed his eyes.

Reached into the Omnitrix—not to transform into aliens, but to synchronize.

"Give me everything."

The Omnitrix responded—every form merged for a second. Light, fire, strength, speed. All compressed into Lumacite's body.

He floated slightly off the ground, glowing blindingly green-white.

"Let's end this."

With a roar, he unleashed a dome of resonance.

Voidspawn within the radius shattered into dust, disintegrating from within.

The commander, injured, tried to retreat toward the rift.

Kai appeared before him.

"No exits today."

One final pulse, perfectly tuned, struck the commander.

Its armor shattered.

Its body collapsed.

But just before it vanished—

Its chest emitted a green hologram, crackling with corrupted light.

A distorted face appeared—wearing a high-tech helm with glowing red eyes.

"S̴o̸,̴ ̶y̶o̴u̶ ̷a̴r̶e̸ ̵t̴h̵e̵ ̸w̶a̶t̸c̸h̶-̸b̴e̴a̵r̵e̷r̴.̶"̶

"T͜h͘is͜ wa͘s̸ ͝n͘ot͢ an͘ in͢v͢as̨įon—i͏t ͢wa͟s͢ a͝ t̡e̷s̛t.̛"

Kai narrowed his eyes.

"Who are you?"

The figure smiled faintly.

"You'll know me… when I come for you."

"Next time, we bring the Collectors."

The hologram exploded in a static burst.

Kai stood there, heart racing, surrounded by fading embers.

The battle was over.
