Old Mrs. Bennett's eyes flashed with irritation. "There is nothing to discuss. The decision has been made."
"But the optics—"
"The optics are perfect," the old woman snapped. "Everyone here will witness what happens when someone betrays this family's trust."
I watched this exchange with growing amusement. Chloe was getting cold feet now that her grandmother was actually following through. She wanted me gone, but quietly. Discretely. This public spectacle might reflect poorly on her judgment.

"Mr. Pierce," Old Mrs. Bennett called out to the phone. "Are you still there?"
"Yes, ma'am. Listening to every word."
