The morning light filters through our bedroom curtains as I wake to the sound of dishes clattering downstairs. Chloe lies beside me, her blonde hair spread across the pillow like spun gold. She looks peaceful in sleep, almost innocent.
"Morning, sweetheart," she murmurs, eyes fluttering open.
"Morning."
She stretches against me, her silk nightgown riding up. "Your parents are already up. I can smell coffee."
"They're not my parents, Chloe. They're your parents."
A shadow crosses her face. "I know. I just thought... since we're married now..."
I swing my legs out of bed. The dynamic in this house has shifted completely since I revealed my true identity. Edward and Amelia Bennett, who once treated me like dirt beneath their shoes, now scramble to please me at every turn.
Downstairs, I find them bustling around the kitchen like servants.
"Good morning, Noah!" Amelia chirps, her voice artificially bright. "I made your favorite breakfast. Eggs Benedict with fresh hollandaise."
