đź“– THE ERA: The New Era

Chapter Five – Echoes of Smoke, Whispers of Steel

Mornings came early in the Verge District.

The sky over District 7 was painted in soft purples and electric blues, broken only by the faint hum of skyrails overhead. Von rose as always — quietly, efficiently. The bed creaked once. His feet touched the cool ground.

Orin's old room remained untouched. The kitchen still smelled faintly of bitter tea and engine oil. Nothing out of place. Nothing repaired.

Von cooked a quick breakfast, read a few lines from an old spirit history book, and packed his things.

🏫 At School – A Normal Day

Classes were uneventful.

Spiritual Theory passed without incident. Combat Strategy focused on mid-range counters. Kai didn't show up — again — and Von was quietly marked present on his behalf by a sympathetic instructor.

During lunch, Von sat in his usual place at the edge of the campus gardens — alone, reading. A few students passed by, chatting, laughing, practicing levitation drills or spirit code weaving.

Nobody paid Von much attention.

Just how he liked it.

🛠️ Meanwhile: Kai's Breakthrough

Far below the surface, Kai worked in silence. A new schematic hovered mid-air — blueprints for a spirit-channeling exo-glove designed to adapt to users of any core affinity.

He wiped sweat from his brow, eyes gleaming. If this worked, he could bypass elemental sync protocols — something even licensed engineers struggled with.

But that wasn't what made him pause.

No — it was the ping on his console.

Encrypted Message: "Interested in a partnership. Come alone. Coordinates attached. — E."

Kai leaned back. A smirk tugged at his lips. "So the vultures are circling."

He didn't answer. Not yet.

🌀 The Trigger

That afternoon, something small changed.

In the middle of an Ethics of Power class, while Professor Halden was lecturing on the boundaries of spiritual law, a tremor passed through the building. Faint. Like a breath held too long.

Everyone paused. A girl dropped her pen.

The teacher looked up.

"Hm. Probably just city maintenance again," he muttered. "Let's move on—"

But Von had felt it.

Not in his body. Not in his thoughts. But in a space deep inside, where the bindings rested like ancient locks on an unread book.

They didn't move. They didn't shift.

But for a moment… it felt like they were watching.

📸 Later That Night – A Picture, A Smile, A Name

Kai returned late. Von was already on the roof, watching the stars. He didn't say anything, but he handed Kai a drink — one of those weird green sodas Kai liked.

"Someone called me Echo Forge today," Kai said, sitting down.

Von smirked. "Sounds like a villain."

"I might become one if they keep underpaying me."

A quiet beat passed. Then Kai held up a photo — grainy, printed, old-school.

"Got a new buyer. Said he used to know Orin."

Von's hand paused.

"What's his name?"

Kai shrugged. "Didn't give one. But he said something else."

He handed Von a crumpled card.

"You're the hidden piece in a broken game."

Von read it twice.

Then tucked it in his pocket like it meant nothing at all.

🧠 Chapter Notes

Von's powers remain sealed — no one suspects anything.

Kai's inventions are gaining traction — dangerous attention is coming.

A subtle moment hints that something knows about Von — but not even he is aware yet.

Their bond as brothers continues to anchor the story's emotional side.
