Chapter 229 - Chapter 229: You Think You Can Stop Me, Sengoku?!

Chapter 229: You Think You Can Stop Me, Sengoku?!

Koron Island. The name Whitebeard had just mentioned. A former territory of the Whitebeard Pirates, now the site of the Marines' G-14 base, commanded by Vice Admiral Doll. What's Blackbeard, a newly-minted traitor to a Yonko crew, doing at a Marine base? Shane wondered. A coincidence? Or something more? He shrugged. It didn't matter. No one was going to stop him from killing his target.

The next morning, in the base commander's office.

"Zehahaha! Vice Admiral Doll, I've given you a whole night to think it over. Have you made your decision?" Blackbeard lounged on the sofa, a wide, gap-toothed grin on his face.

Across from him, Doll took a long drag from her cigarette, her brow furrowed. The files on her desk contained a treasure trove of intelligence on the Whitebeard Pirates. "I'll admit, your offer is tempting," she said slowly. "This information... is priceless to the Marines. But..." she looked up, her eyes scanning the man who had been a veteran of Whitebeard's crew for over twenty years, yet remained a complete unknown. "I don't trust you."

"Zehahaha! So that's it!" Blackbeard laughed. "But a deal of this magnitude... can a mere Vice Admiral really make the call?"

"Fleet Admiral Sengoku was personally briefed on the situation last night," she said, cutting him off. "His opinion is the same as mine. Marshall D. Teach, a 'son' of Whitebeard for over two decades, suddenly betrays him for no reason and comes to us with vital intelligence? It's too strange. It's hard not to suspect you're a double agent."

"Zehahaha! You wound me! But I get it. You want a sign of good faith, don't you?"

"That's right." A stern voice came from the doorway.

"Fleet Admiral Sengoku?!" Doll's eyes widened in shock. "What are you doing here?!"

"I came as soon as I heard," he said, his face weary, dark circles under his eyes. "The G-1 surveillance ship reported that Whitebeard and Shane had met. I came to the New World in case things got out of hand."

So the three Admirals are all on assignment... Doll thought, quickly offering him her seat.

"Marshall D. Teach," Sengoku said, rubbing his temples. "You're seeking the empty Warlord position, correct?"

"Zehahaha! That's right!"

"You're a no-name grunt," Sengoku said, his voice cold. "Whether you've truly betrayed Whitebeard or not, your strength is questionable. If you want the position, you'll have to prove your worth. Bring us the head of a Whitebeard Pirates commander." He paused, his eyes narrowing. "You look familiar. Have we met before?"

Teach's body tensed. "Maybe. I've been in a lot of battles against the Marines over the years," he said with a casual shrug.

"No, it was longer ago than that..." Sengoku murmured, then shook his head. He was about to continue when his face suddenly changed. He shot to his feet and looked out the window. "A powerful presence... is approaching fast." It was an arrogant, unfamiliar aura. The only one it could be was...

"SHANE!!!" he roared.

BOOM!!!

The ceiling and the top half of the walls exploded inward. A handsome, dark-haired young man descended from the sky and stepped into the ruined office. "Looks like I'm interrupting something," he said, his cold eyes settling on Blackbeard with a smile that didn't reach them. "Sorry about that."

"Shane?!" A chill ran down Blackbeard's spine. "How did you know I was here?!" He had flown for an entire day to get here! How had he been tracked so easily?!

Shane didn't answer. He turned to Sengoku. "We've never met, Fleet Admiral, but you know my temper. For the sake of our temporary truce, I suggest you step aside. I have some... personal business to settle with this green-headed fly."

"Personal business?" Sengoku's body began to glow with a faint, golden light. "Pirates don't settle their personal business in a Marine base! And Marshall D. Teach is a potential asset! As long as I'm here, I won't let you do as you please!"

"I'm not interested in arguing," Shane said, ignoring the golden aura. "Out of respect for Garp, I'll say this one last time. Step aside. This has nothing to do with you, and you can't stop me. Get in my way, and I'll just have to beat you up too."

"Such arrogance!" Sengoku laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Have I been off the battlefield so long that a brat like you dares to look down on me?! Has the sea forgotten the power of my fists?!"

"Then let's see what you've got," Shane sneered, and vanished.

BOOM!

Their fists met in the center of the room, and the resulting shockwave blew out the remaining walls. Sengoku cried out in pain as Shane's Haki-wreathed fist punched through his shockwave and slammed into his chest, sending him flying into the rubble.

"Looks like you've gotten even weaker than Garp. You're not even using your Devil Fruit?" Shane said, stepping forward.

"SONIC BLAST!" Doll's angry roar came from the side as she threw a punch.

Shane blocked it with the back of his hand without even looking. "I remember you. You've got guts, I'll give you that," he said, then kicked her in the stomach, sending her flying out of the building and into the plaza below.

"All hands! Evacuate to the perimeter!" she gasped, struggling to her feet. "This is not a battle you can participate in!"

Back in the ruined office, Sengoku had risen from the rubble. His body began to swell, and in a breath, he had transformed into a ten-meter-tall, golden Buddha. "SHANE!!!" his voice boomed. "This is a Marine base! You will not run rampant here!"

"That's more like it!" Shane's figure appeared above him. He grinned and brought his leg down like an axe. "Now you're worthy of a fight! But my message is still the same... Stay out of my way!"

BOOM!!!

Their Haki-infused attacks collided, and the entire fortress, from its roof to its very foundations, began to tremble and collapse.

Zehahaha! My chance!

Blackbeard, who had been cowering in a corner, saw his opening. He transformed into a giant, green-headed fly and buzzed toward the exit. But he'd barely gone a hundred meters when he hit an invisible wall. A terrifying sense of dread washed over him. He looked back to see a crimson slash of light, like a river of blood from the heavens, descending upon him.

"And where do you think you're going?" Shane's cold voice echoed from behind him. "Did I say you could leave?"
