But deep down, Linda's heart was racing. She knew exactly why she didn't want him to see it. Marcus was smart too smart, and she could already tell from the look in his eyes that he wasn't buying the "mirror table accident" story. The marks were too sharp. Too obvious. Only someone naive would believe that those bruises came from glass. Marcus would know. He would know she had been in a fight. And worse, he might even guess who it was with.

Cecilia, that name made her stomach twist again.

No, she couldn't let Marcus see. Not now. Not like this. Not when she still had a chance to preserve what little pride she had left in front of him.

So, quickly, she changed the topic.

With a soft voice and a flicker of nervous energy, she said, "By the way… Marcus, your suit wow. It's very, very beautiful. It fits you so perfectly."

Marcus blinked, caught off guard by the sudden compliment. But he smiled politely, adjusting the sleeve of his navy suit jacket.
