Chapter 21
The Serpent of Prophecy
The valley was wrong.
Tyvaris knew it before he even stepped fully into it.
The air hung heavier here. Not humid. Not hot. Heavy. As if the land itself carried an old memory that had never quite faded. Even the wind refused to move normally through the trees. It slipped sideways around the valley floor, whispering through rocks and dead brush instead of crossing straight through.
The animals knew.
He smelled their absence immediately.
No deer trails.
No rabbits in the brush.
No bird calls.
Even insects avoided the place.
Only one scent truly lived here.
Snake.
Not the thin quick scent of ordinary serpents. Not the musk of small constrictors hiding in rock cracks.
This was older.
Thick.
Cold.
It rolled across the valley like a slow fog.
Tyvaris walked down the slope with careful steps, amber slit-pupiled eyes scanning every shadow and ridge line. His body moved lower now, shoulders hunched slightly forward, instincts sharpening every nerve in his skin.
The serpent souls inside him stirred uneasily.
They knew something larger was near.
He crossed the dry streambed first. The cracked mud still held the enormous imprint he had seen from above. The coil mark ran across the valley floor like a carved road.
Tyvaris crouched beside it again.
His hand rested in the center.
The print dwarfed it.
Good.
His grin spread slowly.
Then the ground moved.
Not the valley.
Something beneath it.
Tyvaris's head snapped up just as the earth burst open twenty yards away.
Stone exploded upward.
Soil tore apart like a wound ripping open.
And Python rose.
The serpent was enormous.
Not simply long.
Ancient.
Its body was thick as a temple column, scaled in dull black-green plates that looked more like layered stone than living flesh. Mud and old leaves clung to the ridges of its armor where it had burrowed beneath the valley floor. Its head alone was the size of a wagon, triangular and scarred, with pale milky eyes that had seen centuries of predators come and go.
Its tongue flicked once.
The air tasted Tyvaris.
Then the serpent reared.
Higher.
Higher still.
Until half its body rose above the trees like a living tower.
Tyvaris tilted his head back to meet its gaze.
Neither moved.
Predator measuring predator.
Python's voice did not come through its mouth.
It came through the ground.
A slow grinding vibration that spoke directly through the bones.
"Storm-child."
Tyvaris blinked once.
Interesting.
The serpent knew what he was.
Python's head lowered slightly, massive jaws opening just enough to reveal two curved venom fangs longer than Tyvaris's entire forearm.
"Typhon's blood… dragon soul… wolf stink."
The serpent's tongue flicked again.
"And hunger."
Tyvaris's grin returned.
"Correct."
The serpent's body began to coil slowly across the valley floor.
Trees cracked under the movement.
"So small," Python rumbled.
Tyvaris shrugged.
"So dead."
Python struck.
The attack came faster than anything that size should have been capable of. The serpent's head shot forward like a spear, jaws snapping where Tyvaris had stood a fraction of a second before.
Tyvaris rolled sideways across the mud and sprang up immediately.
"FUS!"
The shout slammed into Python's face.
The force cracked the ground and blasted leaves and dirt into the air.
Python barely moved.
The serpent blinked slowly.
Then laughed.
Not with sound.
With the grinding tremor of earth shifting.
Tyvaris's grin widened.
Good.
This would not be easy.
Python lunged again.
Tyvaris sprinted straight toward it.
Insane.
But exactly what Python did not expect.
He dove under the descending head and slammed both fists into the serpent's jaw hinge with giant-soul strength. The impact cracked scales and forced the head sideways, but Python's body responded instantly.
The coils moved.
Faster than the head.
The massive serpent wrapped around him.
One coil.
Two.
Three.
The pressure came like a collapsing mountain.
Tyvaris's ribs creaked violently as Python tightened its grip.
The serpent's head lowered slowly until its eye stared directly into his face.
"Little storm."
The pressure increased.
"Crush."
Tyvaris's bones screamed.
His vision darkened.
Then he laughed.
Not loudly.
Just enough.
"Ro."
The second word slipped from his mouth like a blade sliding free.
Balance.
Tyvaris twisted his body suddenly inside the coil, shifting weight and leverage the way the serpent souls inside him had taught. Python's grip faltered for half a heartbeat.
That was all he needed.
"DAH!"
The full shout exploded from his lungs.
"FUS RO DAH!"
The shockwave detonated inside the serpent's coil.
Python's body ripped apart from the inside of its own grip as the force blasted outward. The enormous coils tore loose from around Tyvaris and slammed into the valley floor hard enough to crack stone.
Tyvaris hit the mud and rolled away instantly.
Python reared again, furious now.
Venom dripped from its fangs in thick green drops.
The serpent lunged with full murderous speed.
Tyvaris ran.
Not away.
Up.
He sprinted straight at the rising serpent and leapt onto its body like a climbing wall. His claws dug between the scales as he scrambled upward along the moving coils. Python twisted violently, trying to slam him into the ground, but Tyvaris climbed faster.
The serpent's body whipped sideways.
Tyvaris nearly lost his grip.
He sank his teeth into the scale ridge and hauled himself higher.
Python slammed its body against a stone outcrop.
The rock shattered.
Tyvaris held on.
He reached the serpent's neck just as Python twisted its head back to bite him.
Too slow.
Tyvaris drove his arm into the serpent's eye.
The milky orb burst.
Python screamed.
This time the sound tore the valley apart.
The serpent thrashed violently, smashing trees flat and carving trenches through the ground with its coils.
Tyvaris hung on like a parasite from hell.
Then Python rolled.
The world flipped.
Mud, sky, and scales blurred together.
The serpent slammed its full weight into the ground with Tyvaris beneath it.
The impact cracked the valley floor.
Tyvaris felt something break in his shoulder.
The serpent's head lunged down.
Its jaws closed around his torso.
The fangs pierced his side.
Venom flooded into him.
Everything went white.
Python lifted him off the ground like prey.
The serpent's voice rumbled again.
"Enough."
Tyvaris hung limp for half a second.
Then his eyes opened.
Red.
Not amber.
Dragon-red.
He grabbed both fangs.
The venom burned through his veins like fire, but the dragon soul inside him roared in answer.
Tyvaris pulled.
Hard.
The fangs snapped.
Python recoiled in shock.
Tyvaris landed on the serpent's snout and roared directly into its face.
"FUS RO DAH!"
The shout blasted down Python's open throat.
The force traveled through the serpent's entire body.
Python's spine snapped in three places.
The valley shook as the colossal creature collapsed.
Tyvaris fell beside it, coughing blood.
But Python was not dead yet.
The serpent's tail lashed wildly, smashing a hillside into rubble.
Tyvaris staggered to his feet.
He walked toward the serpent's head slowly.
Each step heavier.
Each breath ragged.
Python's one remaining eye glared at him with ancient hatred.
"You are… wrong."
Tyvaris climbed onto its skull.
"Correct."
He drove both hands through the cracked scale plate between the serpent's eyes and ripped downward with all his strength.
The skull split.
Python's body convulsed.
Then went still.
The soul came next.
It was enormous.
Ancient.
Heavy with centuries of earth power and prophetic awareness.
When it entered Tyvaris it felt like swallowing a storm buried beneath the world.
He screamed.
The valley answered.
Python's knowledge poured into him.
The patience of ancient predators.
The understanding of coils and crushing force.
The sense of the earth itself breathing beneath his feet.
And something deeper.
Something prophetic.
A whisper buried in the serpent's ancient instincts.
The boy who devours monsters will devour gods.
Tyvaris collapsed beside the serpent's corpse.
The valley slowly went silent again.
But something had changed.
Something huge.
Tyvaris had just killed a legendary monster.
Not a beast.
A myth.
And the world noticed.
