Wanda opened the portal with precise magic. A harmonizing space unfolded — a mirror-world stabilized under her hand. She swiftly guided Kurogai and Jean Grey inside.
"Wanda, you will maintain the world's stability," Kurogai said calmly. "I need to step aside and assist Jean."
He turned to Jean. "Jean, this mirror realm is safe. Nothing in here affects the real world. It's perfect for you to begin bonding with the Phoenix Force."
Taking Jean's hand gently, he continued in a softer voice, "You've struggled with control. But the bond between the Phoenix Force and the Phoenix energy—when guided—it can ground the flames. I will channel my Phoenix ability to anchor you."
Jean hesitated, but seeing his resolve, her nervousness settled into determination. "I'll try," she said quietly, not just for herself but for Kurogai's faith in her.
Kurogai nodded. "Good. Watch carefully."
He summoned the Phoenix ability. Pale blue flames curled outward from his body, forming a ghostly aura that enveloped him. It was life energy—light, gentle, yet potent.
Wanda observed, intrigued. Though magic usually seethed with danger, this flame emanated healing rather than destruction—an opposite to its external appearance.
Without fully transforming, Kurogai extended his arm. Blue fire arced out from his palm and drifted onto Jean's arm, binding gently.
Jean felt it—at once fierce and calm. The Phoenix Fire in her awoke. Power surged, violent and raw, but Kurogai's Phoenix's energy softened it. The chaotic force became a pulsing rhythm instead of a burning storm.
"How does it feel?" Kurogai asked.
Jean closed her eyes, feeling inward. She drew all her spirit into a focused point, reaching for the power within. Seconds passed.
Finally, she opened her eyes. Excitement glinted within.
"It feels... stable. I can communicate with it. Not like before—where it resisted me. Now... it listens."
Tears sprang to Jean's eyes as she leaned in and kissed Kurogai gently. "Thank you. For giving me hope."
The moment was tender and genuine.
Kurogai smiled. "Stay here longer if you wish. Practice until it becomes natural."
After a while of guided bonding, he allowed them to step back. Wanda reasserted the portal boundaries and gently closed the mirror space.
Kurogai and Wanda stepped through and returned to the spaceship base. Leaving the chamber behind, they walked together down a quiet corridor.
"Let's step out for fresh air," Kurogai suggested quietly. He knew Wanda rarely sightsee or even stepped away from Kamar-Taj.
Outside, winds whispered across the high deck.
"How is Kamar-Taj now?" Kurogai asked. "Has the Ancient One found a successor?"
Wanda considered, her face unreadable before softening. "There's always risk from other dimensions observing Kamar-Taj, but under my vigilance and the Ancient One's leadership, the temple remains secure. The only concern is finding the next Supreme Mage."
She paused. "It is rare to locate someone of great talent and heart. The Ancient One has not yet selected one. She has traveled the world himself at times, seeking a candidate."
Kurogai looked thoughtful.
"If you ever choose a loyal mage for my purposes," Wanda continued, "I would step down as Supreme Mage to serve under you. My loyalty is yours."
Her tone carried no bitterness—only hope. Wanda believed in him, and spoke as only a trusted ally would.
Kurogai placed his hand over his heart. "Your value far exceeds that of any temple. Magic as powerful as yours... I'm grateful you remain by my side."
Wanda's cheeks warmed, a soft smile curving her lips.
They stood together in silence, understanding anchored between them. The future held many battles and alliances—some predictable, others unexpected. But with Wanda's magic and Jean's Phoenix potential under caution, Kurogai's vision for his destiny grew increasingly tangible.
