Chapter 10 - Echo VIII — Misunderstanding & Evolution

When Kael tried to move despite the pain,he couldn't.It wasn't total paralysis, but rather a strange sensation,as if his body had become an inert machine. He could still feel the ability to move—but couldn't act naturally. It was like trying to push a car without fuel:you could make it budge, slowly, with effort, but never truly animate it.He had to summon insane effortjust to move a single millimeter. It wasn't a physical incapacity, but a visceral impression,as if an invisible forceheld him in place. No matter how he struggled,he felt like a stranger within his own body. And yet…he knew it was only a feeling. Not a fact.He knew something had happened.Something unknown.Something no one had ever described before…Or maybe—Yes.In a way,in the old Murim tales.

Still lost in a fog of confusion,he suddenly noticed somethingthat had been there since the beginning—but he hadn't paid attention until now.Above his head, the bluish-black flame, which had remained motionlesssince he entered this place, began to descend.Every movement of the flameseemed heavier, more imposing, and its approach felt inevitable.Kael's heart skipped a beat.A cold shiver ran through his spine. He turned pale.A frozen fear,an irrational terror, gripped him.He didn't know why,but he understood something clearly:the last thing that had moved herehad subjected him to the worst agony imaginable. He shook his head, desperate to escape this. But he couldn't.His eyes tracked the flameas it slowly lowered, approaching his chest.Every inch gainedfelt like a descent deeper into fear.He had the distinct feelingthat the flame would devour him…or engulf him in a new dimension of pain.

In a near-panic state,he struggled in every direction, but his body barely responded. His limbs moved at an unnatural pace. His head swung back and forth, trapped by the dizzying terror. His mind was drowningin a storm of stress…

And without realizing, his skull slammed into the groundwith such forcethat it left a deep mark in the stone—hard as marble. The pain was overwhelming—but fleeting.Insignificant, compared to what he truly felt.

Finally, the flame stopped just above his stomach. It hung there a moment,as if watching him…Then split—into dancing fragments of fire, like blazing spirits. They moved through the air, drawing lines of flamealong each limb. But three areasreceived a concentrated focus:• The stomach• The heart• The headEach of them burned brighter.More intensely. As if something deeper, something mysterious, lay dormant there.

That's when Kael understood. His heart stopped for a second—He knew it was about to begin again.

A voice whispered at his ear, gentle, almost maternal.Soothing.Comforting.But strangely alien.

It said:"One last effort, and it'll be over. One last effort. I believe in you…"

And the flames—entered his body. All at once.

What followedwas worse than anything he had endured. An agony beyond words. His skin changed.A supernatural heatspread through his cells…and he screamed.

Cries of pure sufferingechoed across the void, not just in his mind, but in the very air.The darkness itselfseemed to trembleunder the weight of his pain.

The sound of it—so intense—that even the eternal, indifferent voidseemed to fear it.

Black liquidoozed from his pores, spilling like a toxic slime,a nauseating substance. His blood, too, escaped at times,in small burstswith each convulsion.

His skin changed color—becoming translucent black,as if the flames flowedthrough his veins, his arteries, his muscles, his tendons, every fiber of him.It was as if the flameswere scanning him from within, burning away impurity, purifying every cell.

But it didn't stop there.

His limbs trembled. His body twistedas the fire expelled all impurity—turning Kaelinto something new.Something radically different.

Then,a new sensation arose.Amid the intense pain,Kael felt a strange lightnessin his fingers. At first,he thought it was an illusion,a trick born of suffering. But no—he was feeling his fingers again, those he barely remembered owning. The sharp painsbegan to fade,as if replacedby something stronger. His fingers felt… stable.

He tried moving them.Carefully.First the fingers,bending slowly.Then his hands.Each muscle,each tendonseemed to awaken,regaining a flexibilityhe thought lost.He didn't understand.How?Why?He had no idea.

But the painwas fading. And in its place—a feeling of completion. As if each part of his body was…done.Finished.Complete.

His arms moved—slowly at first, like machinery learning to function again. But soon,it became more fluid. He could feel tension in his muscles, but nothing comparedto the previous agony.

They felt rebuilt.Reshaped.As if the flames had rewrittenevery fiber, every thread of tissueto make them stronger.Faster.

He kept exploring it.His legs.His hips.His spine…Each part of himresetting itself.Every movementwas smoother.More natural.As if reclaiming a bodylong lost.

Painful zonesfelt "finished,"as if sufferingno longer applied to them.

His healing advancedat a pacehe couldn't comprehend.Scars sealed.Bones fused.Muscles rebuiltwith perfect alignment.As if the painhad prepared him—for a rebirth.A new beginning.

But what struck him mostwas the strange feeling of wholeness.Of boundless renewalflowing into every corner of his being.

He was no longerjust a broken man, tortured by pain.He was something else.Something transformed.

And each movement, each breath, felt oddly easy.As if the world around himhad shifted.Balanced itselfto meet his new form.

And then,it hit him—with dizzying clarity:

The transformation…was far from over.

What he had just endured—that unbearable agony—was only the beginning.

This body he now owned, this new form…It was his.

But at what cost? What was he becoming?
