I didn't sleep at all, all through the longest night I can remember. I paced the clearing, staring at the spot where Lupus's hand had disappeared into the earth...into whatever dark secret claimed it. The moonlight turned the world a cold silver, and I shivered despite my coat, because I knew what I had to do next.
Biat was by the edge of the pit, marks the blade he carried, itching to dig with every trembling under. I walked to him, breath shallow.
"We go down," I said simply. No bravado, no fear just the lowest, truest pulse of my heart. My husband was trapped below, bound by dark magic. Alpha cries were meant to protect, and I had to honor mine.
Biat nodded, eyes fierce. "I insist," he added gently, like a promise.
I grabbed his hand, sharp warmth against my cold skin. "Let's begin."
