"Okay. One left."

After taking down Rhino, Jack Kadere landed in front of Norman Osborn, grabbed him by the throat, and hoisted him up like a ragdoll. Norman's glider was smashed, his mask half-broken. Jack's knuckles were still bleeding.

Gwen dropped beside them, panting behind her mask.

"Black Spider—thank you again. But… please, don't kill him! We can't just—"

Snap!

Before she could finish her plea, Norman's neck twisted at a sickening angle.

Dead.

"You—!" Gwen gasped.

But Jack was already gone, soaring into the sky on a web line before she could speak another word.

She stomped in frustration. "Ugh! You always do this—can't you at least let me finish what I'm saying first?!"

So much for hero etiquette.

As the media swarmed the scene, Gwen remained frozen, digesting what had just happened.

Then—

"Gwen? Was that really you?"

She turned. Jessica Kadere stood there, still shaken, the wind blowing through her disheveled hair. Gwen's eyes widened behind her mask.

Reporters were starting to close in.

Without another word, Gwen grabbed Jessica by the waist, fired a line of webbing, and launched them both up into the New York skyline.

...

Between rooftops and steel towers...

Jessica held on tightly, staring at Gwen in disbelief.

"Oh my God... it really is you!"

Gwen finally pulled off her hood. "Surprise~" she said with a half-smile.

Since the secret was out, there was no point pretending anymore.

A few minutes later, they landed on a quiet rooftop in the Lower East Side. The sky was starting to fade orange, and the wind had calmed.

Jessica sat on the edge, legs dangling off, hugging her knees. "A lot happened today…"

"I noticed," Gwen said, chuckling. "Didn't expect you to be the type to punch out a genetically-enhanced supervillain."

Jessica smiled faintly, but her eyes drifted to the horizon. "It wasn't always like this…"

She took a breath and finally said, "My powers came after a car accident. I survived, but… my family didn't. I didn't even know what to do with myself afterward."

"I'm sorry…"

"It's okay," Jessica said quietly. "I was lost for a while. Then I met my brother—Jack. He took me in. Treated me like a real human being again. That's when I started feeling like maybe I had a future."

She turned to Gwen with a hint of admiration.

"And then you came along. Flying around like you own the sky, saving people. I thought… maybe I could be that kind of person too. Maybe I could stop someone else from going through what I did."

Gwen's voice was soft. "Jack would be proud of you."

Jessica scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Please. That guy? He doesn't care if I become a hero or an accountant. He just doesn't want me wrecking things or embarrassing him in public. If I give him one more gray hair, he'll probably launch me into the sun."

Gwen burst out laughing. "You say that like you haven't already embarrassed him in public!"

Jessica grinned. "Fair."

If Jessica hadn't met Jack, Gwen couldn't imagine what kind of path she'd be on now.

Maybe Jack was a little harsh—but he was clearly doing his best.

....

Later that day — Lower East Side.

Jack Kadere leaned against a lamppost, scrolling through his phone. He held up the screen to Jessica.

"You care to explain this?"

The image: a photo of Jessica mid-air, mid-fall, mid-mask-drop.

Jessica stood there awkwardly in a black mini-skirt, fingers tangled together in front of her. "Um. I wasn't trying to go viral?"

Jack raised an eyebrow. "You weren't even trying to land upright."

Jessica fidgeted, glancing around. "Look, I meant to be more careful. But that rhino guy—he just—he was huge! And Gwen needed help!"

Jack read from his phone dramatically: "'Unidentified female in combat attire self-identifies as "Knightress." Suffered mask malfunction during combat and tripped over villain's horns.'"

He paused. "'Tripped.' Really?"

Jessica pouted. "You weren't there!"

Jack stared blankly. "Jessica. I was there."

"…Oh."

She tried a different tactic. "Buuuut… I love you~"

"Not happening."

Jessica lunged forward with open arms. "Brother! Let me express my gratitude—!"

Jack sighed. "This again?"

Before she could finish, he caught her mid-hug, spun her around, and tossed her over his knee like a sack of potatoes.

Jessica's eyes went wide.

"Wait—Jack—no—don't—"

Fwip!

He flipped her pleated skirt up with casual ease.

"Ahh! Not there—!"

SMACK!
