Chapter 29 - Chapter 17: Blooming Epiphany Pt. 2

Turn 3 – Sora

"Damn, that one stung more than I expected. Guess mommy's deck really does suit you." Sora winced, but still managed to grin mockingly, his words laced with venom. The smirk on his face was deliberately aimed to provoke.

His jab hit the mark. Yuri's expression darkened, his eyes narrowing dangerously.

"If I were you, I'd shut that mouth and get on with your turn," Yuri shot back coldly. "Because my Musketeers don't take kindly to mockery. They might just shoot you—or stab you—without warning."

Cecilia, standing by Yuri's side, raised her rapier in perfect synchrony with his words, the blade gleaming with an edge of threat.

The field grew heavier, and even the onlookers felt it.

Ryuki, ever trying to cut tension with humor, quipped: "Even though he's turned over a new leaf... there are still thorns in Yuri."

The joke landed like a brick. Everyone around the field groaned audibly.

"Never make dad jokes again, Ryuki." Ruri pressed her fingers against her temple, sighing in exasperation.

"Fine, fine. Just trying to lighten things up," Ryuki muttered, raising his hands defensively.

Sora chuckled at their banter. "Alright then, let's get serious. My turn!" He flipped his hand dramatically. "I activate the effect of Toy Vendor! I discard one card, then draw one card!"

He slid a card into the graveyard and pulled a new one from his deck. His grin widened instantly.

"Looks like luck's on my side this time! I Special Summon—Furnimal Owl!"

From a burst of light, a plush, brown owl adorned with oversized glasses fluttered into existence, wings flapping gently as it took to the skies above Sora.

Furnimal Owl

Level 2 / EARTH / Fairy / Effect

ATK: 1000 / DEF: 1000

"And with Owl's effect, I can add one Polymerization straight from my deck to my hand!" He searched and quickly revealed the spell card. "But that's not all—since Toy Vendor is still on my field, I also trigger the effect of Furnimal Wings in my graveyard! By banishing both copies of Furnimal Wings, I get to draw two cards. And then, by sending Toy Vendor to the grave, I draw another one!"

The graveyard glowed as two shining wings disintegrated into light, while the colorful Toy Vendor card collapsed into fragments of paper. Sora drew his three cards in quick succession, the flourish of each pull showing his excitement.

"That's three draws at once..." Yuri muttered, his eyes narrowing further. His caution spiked; Sora's pace was accelerating dangerously.

Sora spread his new hand with glee. "And next—I activate the Continuous Spell, Edge Nightmare! Once per turn, I can Special Summon one Level 4 or lower Edge Imp monster from my graveyard. So come back—Edge Imp Scissors!"

The grotesque pair of scissors with a demonic eye in its center materialized again, snapping its blades with a chilling shhk-shhk.

Edge Imp Scissors

Level 3 / DARK / Fiend / Effect

ATK: 1200 / DEF: 800

"Now it's time to cut things up. I activate Polymerization! I fuse Furnimal Owl, Furnimal Bear, and Edge Imp Scissors together!"

The three monsters lifted into the air, pulled into a swirling vortex of light. Sora raised his hand high, his chant brimming with theatrical energy.

"Steel blades possessed by demons! Fangs of the beast, eyes of the void! Combine your strength within this mystical whirlpool and unleash your terrifying new form! Fusion Summon!"

The vortex exploded outward. A massive teal-colored stuffed tiger descended with a guttural roar, its stomach split open to reveal enormous demonic scissors gleaming with bloodlust.

"Come forth! Level 6! Mystical jungle beast that tears everything to shreds! Death Toy Scissors Tiger!"

Death Toy Scissors Tiger

Level 6 / DARK / Fiend / Fusion / Effect

ATK: 1900 / DEF: 1200

As the monstrous plush hit the field, the ground itself seemed to quake under its paws.

"Scissors Tiger's effect activates!" Sora declared with a savage grin. "When it's Fusion Summoned, I can destroy cards on your field equal to the number of Fusion Materials used! I fused three monsters—so that's two of your set cards and Cecilia!"

The demonic tiger leapt forward, its stomach-scissors snapping with horrific speed. Two of Yuri's set cards were ripped apart in bursts of light, and Cecilia stepped forward fearlessly.

She looked to Yuri one last time. He nodded, firm and composed, acknowledging her resolve. With that, she gave a graceful bow before dissolving into shards of light as the beast's claws shredded her apart.

"Cecilia..." Yuri whispered.

But Yuri's hand was already moving. "Trap, open! Counter-Crossfire! When a Musketeer monster is destroyed by battle or card effect, I place two Thorn Counters on your monster!"

The energy of Cecilia's sacrifice flared. Vines of thorns erupted and wrapped themselves tightly around the Scissors Tiger, digging into its plush hide.

Death Toy Scissors Tiger

Thorn Counters: 2

The crowd shifted uneasily.

"Yuri's field is wide open now..." Rin said grimly, tension in her voice.

"And with Tiger's secondary effect on top of that..." Ruri added, watching with concern.

Sora spread his arms wide, feeding on the momentum. "That's right! Scissors Tiger gains 300 attack for every Furnimal or Death Toy monster on my field! That's one, two—so it gains an additional 300 ATK!"

The tiger roared as its scissors snapped, energy coursing through its stitched body.

Death Toy Scissors Tiger

ATK: 1900 → 2200

The air felt heavier now, the scent of danger hanging over the field.

The battle raged on as Sora's command echoed across the field.

"Battle! Death Toy Scissors Tiger—attack that traitor directly!"

The monstrous tiger roared, its jagged blades glinting under the artificial light of the duel field. It launched into the air, cutting through the wind with murderous intent, its eyes fixed solely on Yuri.

But Yuri, unflinching as always, raised his hand with a calm smirk. "You thought I'd be caught off guard by something so straightforward? Hardly. I'll show you why underestimating me is your gravest mistake."

With a flourish, he revealed a card from his hand. "When a monster declares an attack, I can Special Summon this! Appear, Phalaenopsis Musketeer, Kirstie!"

A swirl of petals scattered like a sudden gust of spring. Out of the bloom emerged a young woman clad in a dignified pink musketeer's uniform, her musket gleaming in her hands. On her hat rested a crown of Phalaenopsis orchids, their delicate beauty a striking contrast to the battlefield around her.

Phalaenopsis Musketeer, Kirstie

Level 1 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 0 / DEF: 0

Sora blinked, then immediately burst out laughing. "Hah! You call that a defense? Zero attack, zero defense? You're just stalling with weak flowers, Yuri!"

But Yuri's eyes sharpened, his tone cutting through Sora's mockery like steel. "Then laugh while you can—because those same flowers will become your downfall." He snapped his fingers. "Kirstie's effect activates! I send the top five monsters of my deck to the Graveyard, and Kirstie gains DEF equal to half their combined defenses. Come forth, my Quintet Wall!"

The duel disk hummed as five cards shot out in sequence, landing in Yuri's Graveyard slot. At the same time, five emerald summoning circles burst open across the field. One by one, the spirits of the fallen Musketeers emerged, their images flickering like echoes of a proud army answering their commander's call.

The first to step forth was a regal woman draped in crimson. Her dress flared like the petals of a Gerbera flower, and atop her wide-brimmed hat rested the bloom itself. She hefted a massive cannon with effortless poise.

Gerbera Musketeer, Paulette

Level 4 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1000 / DEF: 2000

Next came a sprightly girl in a green uniform, her left arm entwined in living vines that pulsed with life. A tulip bloomed on her cap, and her eyes sparkled with youthful determination.

Tulip Musketeer, Mina

Level 3 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1200 / DEF: 700

The third to arrive was a man cloaked in deep navy blue. A black mask obscured half his face, his rapier raised with a practiced calm.

Night Queen Musketeer, Daniel

Level 2 / DARK / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 900 / DEF: 400

Following him was a graceful young woman clad in pristine white trimmed with crimson. An amaryllis adorned her hair, and at her waist hung a slender rapier that gleamed with restrained elegance.

Amaryllis Musketeer, Tatiana

Level 4 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1400 / DEF: 1000

Finally, a striking warrior appeared, golden hair cascading like sunlight over her shoulders. She wore a sleeveless green uniform edged with delicate frills, and in each hand shimmered a rapier. A violet water lily crowned her hat, the image of serenity masking her lethal precision.

Water Lily Musketeer, Ruth

Level 4 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1800 / DEF: 900

As the five spirits stood in formation, their essence flowed into Kirstie. A radiant shield of blossoms enveloped her, petals swirling with protective might.

"By combining their defenses, Kirstie gains 2700 DEF!" Yuri declared.

Phalaenopsis Musketeer, Kirstie

DEF: 0 → 2700.

The sudden surge of energy made Scissors Tiger skid to a halt mid-leap, its claws screeching against the barrier of petals. The monstrous beast growled in frustration, but its master quickly barked another order.

"Scissors Tiger, stand down!" Sora grit his teeth, raising his hand. The blade-beast lowered its stance reluctantly, retreating behind him.

"Tch... Fine. I'll let you hide behind your flowers this turn. But don't think you've won anything yet!" With a harsh motion, Sora slammed two cards onto his duel disk. "I set two cards face-down and end my turn."

The holograms materialized behind him, two menacing blurs of shadow waiting for their moment to spring.

Yuri, however, remained unfazed. He merely adjusted his glove as his voice resonated with composed finality. "At the end of your turn, Kirstie's effect activates once more. She departs the field..."

The shield of petals dissolved, Kirstie bowing gracefully before fading away.

"...and in return, I reclaim two Musketeers from my Graveyard. Tamara and Tatiana, return to my hand." The cards ejected neatly into Yuri's waiting fingers, the precision of his movements as cold and calculated as ever.

The field fell silent, tension thick in the air. Both duelists stared each other down, their philosophies clashing in the silence more fiercely than the monsters themselves.

Sora clenched his fists, eyes blazing with manic determination. His field was dwindling, his life points hanging by a thread. And yet, his grin remained wide, his resolve unshaken. "Heh... so you've managed to hold out, Yuri. But I'm not done—not by a long shot! These toys of mine won't break so easily."

Yuri tilted his head slightly, his smirk almost pitying. "You still don't understand. This duel isn't about endurance—it's about inevitability. And your fate was sealed the moment you chose to face me."

The two dueled not just with their cards, but with their very wills. Every play carried weight, every summon reflected their ideologies—Sora's unrelenting chaos against Yuri's ruthless precision.

The turn shifted, the momentum hanging in the balance. But while Sora's field bore signs of strain, Yuri's strategy had only begun to bloom.

Yuri: 4000 | Hand: 4

Sora: 1400 | Hand: 0

Turn 4 – Yuri

"Boku no turn! Draw!"

The card slid into Yuri's hand, and the smirk that crossed his lips wasn't one of mockery this time, but of conviction. His eyes flickered briefly toward Ryuki, sharp yet earnest.

"Ryuki," Yuri spoke with an unfamiliar steadiness, his voice clear and resolute. "Though we've met through different circumstances... I still see you as a rival I must surpass. And to do that—" his smirk deepened into something more genuine, "—I'll take a page out of your book."

Ryuki returned the look with a small but approving smile. "Then show me, Yuri. Show me the you who has moved past the shadows."

The moment hung heavy in the air, and Yuri turned away from Ryuki to lock eyes with Sora. The cold, sadistic gleam that once defined him was gone. In its place was a seriousness, a calm determination. Sora stiffened—he wasn't used to this version of Yuri.

"From my hand, I activate the Spell Card—Thorned Baptism!" Yuri declared, holding the card high. The hologram pulsed with emerald and violet light, thorned vines erupting from the ground around him. "By sending the required materials from the field, hand, or even deck to the graveyard, I can conduct a Fusion Summon!"

Sora's jaw dropped. "You can Fusion Summon using monsters straight from your deck?!"

But Yuri wasn't done. His confidence only grew. "I fuse Brocollini Musketeer, Kirah and Gardenia Musketeer, Alain from my deck!"

Two figures burst forth from the glowing deck, their forms crystallizing onto the field. One was a green-haired young woman, her hair tied up like the florets of broccoli with an orange bandana. A short sword gleamed at her hip, her stance sharp and ready. Beside her stood a man in a crisp musketeer uniform of forest green, musket in hand, rapier sheathed at his waist, and a gardenia flower perched atop his black hat.

The two crossed their weapons in salute before being consumed by a swirling vortex of violet and emerald petals. The fusion vortex pulsed as Yuri lifted his arm and began his chant.

"A flower that burns brighter than fire, a warrior who dances amidst petals! When courage and grace intertwine, the battlefield becomes her stage! Fusion Summon! Bloom proudly—Level 8, Peony Musketeer, Martina!"

The vortex exploded in a cascade of scarlet petals. From within stepped a radiant woman clad in a crimson dress embroidered with flowers, her left eye veiled by a crimson peony eyepatch. A wide-brimmed hat, crowned with blossoms, shadowed her determined face as she raised her rapier in defiance.

Peony Musketeer, Martina

Level 8 / EARTH / Bioroid / Fusion / Effect / Legion

ATK: 3000 / DEF: 2000

The air itself seemed to shimmer around her. Sora's chest tightened, an unease settling over him. There was something different about this summon... something he couldn't quite place.

Martina turned her head toward Yuri. Their eyes met, and she gave a subtle nod. Yuri, for the first time in a long while, nodded back—not as a master to his servant, but as equals.

"Now then," Yuri said softly, before raising his voice. "Let me show you something even more spectacular. Martina, Seek the Mate!"

Martina thrust her rapier skyward. A brilliant light surged from the blade, piercing the sky of the virtual battlefield. The Volcano Zone rumbled violently in response—the simulated magma within its craters erupted in cascades of fire and molten rock, as though nature itself was answering her call.

The spectators gasped as the battlefield trembled beneath their feet.

"N-No way..." Kenji's voice cracked as his eyes widened.

"Is he about to—?" Aichi began, only for Ryuki to finish, his voice calm yet tinged with awe.

"I think he is."

Yuri's eyes hardened, and his voice rang out like a commandment. "I return five cards from my graveyard to my deck... and with that, I summon forth a partner worthy of Martina!"

The graveyard pulsed, five cards sliding back into his deck in a cascade of glowing light. A single card then ejected from the deck, glowing faintly. Yuri caught it, and his hand trembled—not from doubt, but from the weight of what it represented.

He pressed it onto his Duel Disk with reverence. "King of flowers, radiant upon the battlefield! With beauty that terrifies the foe and grace that burns like fire—Peony Musketeer, Toure! Legion!"

Martina's rapier ignited in crimson flame as a golden "V" symbol blazed above her. The light expanded, coalescing into another figure beside her. From the golden radiance emerged Toure—Martina's mirror, her twin. She wore a similar flowing gown, though hers was ivory white, her right eye hidden beneath a pale peony blossom. In her hand gleamed a white rapier, a weapon that radiated serenity to Martina's ferocity.

Peony Musketeer, Toure

Level 7 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect / Mate

ATK: 2500 / DEF: 2000

Gasps echoed from the stands.

"No way..." Yuya muttered, stunned.

"Yuri actually performed a—" Yuto started, before the words died in his throat.

"—Legion," Ruri, Serena, and Rin finished together, their voices trembling in disbelief.

On the sideline, Emi turned toward Satoru with wide eyes. "Satoru-san... did Yuri-kun's mother tell you to put that card in his deck?"

The Dark Zone Branch Chief folded his arms, his expression softening. He nodded once. "Yes. Asuna-san entrusted it to me. She said it would serve as a bond between her and her son." His eyes briefly followed the radiant pair standing side by side. "Two flowers, hand in hand. The white welcomes him with open arms... and the red shields him from harm."

The golden "V" shimmered brighter as Martina and Toure stood united, their blades drawn, ready to fight as one. Their petals filled the battlefield like a storm, both beautiful and deadly. And at Yuri's side, they felt less like tools of destruction, and more like guardians of his resolve.

Sora, who had witnessed Ryuki's previous duel, knew exactly what was about to happen. Legion was not a mechanic one could take lightly, and the moment Yuri announced it, he immediately broke into a sprint across the shifting terrain of the Action Field, his eyes darting for the glimmer of Action Cards hidden among the broken stone and fallen leaves.

Yuri, however, only chuckled, folding his arms as he watched the boy run.

"Oh? You think those Action Cards will save you? Go ahead—search. I'll give you the time. After all, watching you scurry only makes this more entertaining."

Sora grit his teeth, knowing full well Yuri wasn't bluffing. The Musketeers grew stronger the more they worked in unison, and a single misstep could tilt the entire duel out of his control.

"Now that I've established my Legion," Yuri declared, raising his arm dramatically, "Toure and Martina's powers will merge as one!"

Legion (Peony Musketeer, Martina + Peony Musketeer, Toure)

ATK: 5500 / DEF: 4000

The combined aura of the two Musketeers burst outward in a dazzling display of petals and thorns, the field trembling beneath the surge of their unified strength.

"Let's start the chains," Yuri continued. "When Toure is summoned by a Legion's effect, one Thorn Counter is placed upon your monster."

A volley of thorny vines shot forward, lashing into the Scissors Tiger with violent precision.

Death Toy Scissors Tiger

Thorn Counter: 2 → 3

Sora flinched as the beast roared in irritation, its form struggling against the tightening grip of the thorns.

"And then," Yuri went on smoothly, "I draw one card. If that card happens to be a monster that shares the same Level as one on my field, I can Special Summon it immediately. Let's see..."

He drew, his grin widening—then fading into mock disappointment as he revealed the card.

"Ah, how tragic. Not a monster."

He displayed a gleaming Spell Card for all to see before tucking it into his hand. "No matter. My Musketeers always march forward."

Yuri's gaze sharpened as he thrust a hand toward his Graveyard. "I activate Kirah's effect! When she's used as Fusion Material for a Musketeer Fusion Monster, I can check the top four cards of my deck. If one of them is a Musketeer, I Special Summon it!"

The top cards fanned out in the air, glowing with floral energy. Yuri plucked one confidently.

"Come forth—Cyclamen Musketeer, Favlia!"

A woman in pristine white musketeer regalia appeared in a graceful leap, a shining pink rapier in her hand. Her cape unfurled like a blooming flower, and the cyclamen blossoms atop her hat shimmered with a noble glow.

Cyclamen Musketeer, Favlia

Level 5 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1900 / DEF: 1800

"Next is Alain," Yuri pressed on, his tone unwavering. "When he's used as Fusion Material for a Musketeer Fusion, I draw one card. And if it's a Level 4 or lower Musketeer, I can Special Summon it—and it gains 500 attack."

The card slid into his hand, and his smirk faltered. A sigh followed.

"Looks like luck favors you today, Sora."

He revealed a Trap Card with mild annoyance before pocketing it. "But don't think that will save you."

His hand rose once more, and the ground trembled beneath the call of his commanding voice.

"Martina's Legion effect—activate! By returning three Musketeers from my Graveyard to the Deck, I can check the top five cards and Special Summon two Musketeers among them. And those I summon will each gain 800 attack."

He flicked three cards back into his Deck, the glow of rejuvenated blossoms surrounding them before shuffling into place. The next five cards appeared in a radiant spread. Yuri's eyes gleamed as he chose without hesitation.

"Revive yourselves—Gerbera Musketeer, Paulette! Amaryllis Musketeer, Tatiana!"

The air crackled as Paulette leapt forth, musket primed with a fierce grin, followed by Tatiana, whose blades twirled in an elegant dance of petals. Their return only added to the oppressive atmosphere of Yuri's field.

Gerbera Musketeer, Paulette

Amaryllis Musketeer, Tatiana

Level 4 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1400 → 2200 / DEF: 1000

"And of course," Yuri added with a snap of his fingers, "Toure's effect ensures yet another Thorn Counter afflicts your tiger."

The Scissors Tiger growled as thorny vines constricted tighter around its metallic body.

Death Toy Scissors Tiger

Thorn Counter: 3 → 4

By now, Yuri's field was a dazzling—and terrifying—display of firepower. Martina and Toure stood at the center, their Legion aura illuminating the battlefield with blinding floral radiance. Favlia's rapier gleamed, Paulette's musket was already aimed, and Tatiana spun her twin blades with lethal grace. The formation was flawless, an army marching in perfect harmony under Yuri's command.

Sora's eyes widened as he took in the overwhelming display. "Damn it..." He pushed himself harder, boots slamming against the shifting terrain as his gaze locked on a faint shimmer in the distance. An Action Card. His breath grew ragged as he sprinted, every fiber of his being aware that Yuri's offensive could break him the moment the next attack was declared.

But Yuri only smiled, tilting his head as he watched Sora struggle. "Run as you like, little bird. The garden has already bloomed—and soon enough, its thorns will close around you completely."

"Battle! Legion, attack his Death Toy Scissors Tiger! And I activate Martina's effect!" Yuri's voice rang sharp, commanding. "When she attacks while in Legion, and her target has a Thorn Counter, I can remove all counters and reduce its ATK by 300 for each!"

The field glowed with venomous energy as Martina's rapier gleamed, ready to strike. The thorny vines wrapped around Sora's tiger began to pulse as if about to drain its power.

"Like hell I'll let you go through with that!" Sora shouted, snapping his card forward. "Counter Trap—Death Toy March! When a monster activates an effect that targets my monsters, I negate it!"

The vines shriveled and fell away, dispersing into sparks of green light. Scissors Tiger roared as the threat faded, its strength fully preserved. Sora allowed himself a sharp breath of relief.

But his reprieve lasted only a heartbeat.

"Not bad," Yuri smirked, brushing back his hair. "But you think that's enough to stop me? Think again."

Sora's eyes narrowed.

"Then I send one Death Toy Fusion Monster from my Extra Deck to the graveyard, and in exchange, I can Special Summon one Death Toy that lists that monster as material—ignoring all conditions!" Sora's voice thundered, his resolve unshaken. "From my Extra Deck, I send Death Toy Scissors Bear to the grave! And in return, I call forth this beast of fury! Emerge—Death Toy Sabre Tiger!"

The arena quaked. From a vortex of dark blue energy, a hulking tiger emerged. Its stitched hide looked torn and unstable, stuffed with malice. Blades jutted from its limbs like weapons forged from nightmares, glinting in the cruel light. Its roar rattled the walls, shaking the duel stage with feral violence.

"And Sabre Tiger's effect! When it's summoned, I return one Death Toy monster from my graveyard to the field! Rise again—Death Toy Scissors Bear!"

The ground split apart, stuffed seams ripping through the floor as the bear clawed its way out of the abyss, eyes glowing red as it lumbered back beside its allies.

"And with Scissors Tiger's support," Sora continued with a grin, "all Death Toys I control gain 300 ATK for each other! But my Sabre Tiger makes it even better—boosting them by 400 ATK each instead!"

The field pulsed violently, dark energy surging through every Death Toy. They expanded with monstrous force, their stitched hides stretching as their strength multiplied.

Spectators gasped. The sheer offensive wall that stood before Yuri dwarfed what any normal duelist could push through. Even seasoned fighters like Christopher and Kenji tensed at the sight.

Sora thrust his hand forward. "Give up now, Yuri! If you surrender, I'll card you painlessly. But if you drag this out... I won't show mercy!"

The crowd's attention locked on Yuri. But his expression didn't falter. His smile, thin and cold, lingered as if mocking the idea of surrender.

"You really think I'd bow to you because you demanded it?" His tone dripped with disdain. "I'm not done. Not by a long shot."

Sora sneered. "Then play your last pathetic card. Once you're done, I'll crush you next turn."

Yuri's gaze hardened, his amusement twisting into a chilling glare. "You're wrong, Sora. There will be no next turn."

The words froze the air. For the briefest instant, silence weighed down the arena like a suffocating fog.

And then it hit them.

Ryuki's eyes widened, his PSYqualia surging to life with a violent pulse. The same overwhelming dread coursed through Ruri, Rin, Emi, Aichi, Christopher, Kenji, and Ashley, their own abilities reacting in unison to the impending catastrophe.

"Yuri! Don't you dare use it!" Ryuki shouted, stepping forward, voice sharp with urgency.

Ruri grabbed his arm, panic flashing in her eyes. "What's happening, Ryuki? What's he about to do?!"

On the opposite side, Aichi's chest tightened, his voice breaking with alarm as he turned to his sister. "Emi... do you remember what happened during my first year of high school?"

Emi's eyes widened, horror dawning. "No... it can't be that..."

Their words clashed against the walls, frantic and desperate. Yet Yuri stood firm, deaf to their warnings. He looked down at the single card in his hand, the faint smile returning to his lips.

"I activate the Quick-Play Spell—Яeverse Fusion!"

Gasps echoed through the arena.

"With this, I can Fusion Summon using monsters in my graveyard, and I can also treat two of my monsters on the field as DARK Attribute! But the price..." Yuri's voice grew low, almost reverent, "...is 1000 Life Points for each material I use."

His Life Points dropped violently, the cost slicing away at his reserve.

Yuri: 4000 → 1000 LP

"I choose the White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia, from my graveyard... and my Legion, Martina and Toure, whom I shall treat as darkness incarnate! When Legion is used, they count as two materials!"

The audience shielded their eyes as Cecilia's pale figure emerged from the grave, her once radiant aura now dimmed, flickering with unstable shadows. Martina and Toure rose above her, their forms dissolving into shards of light as they ascended toward the heavens.

A ring of pitch-black energy appeared in the sky above the field, its shape jagged, its aura suffocating. The three Musketeers were pulled into its core, their cries warped into echoes as the circle swallowed them whole.

Yuri spread his arms, his chant resonating like a curse across the arena:

"From purity to corruption, the lilies twist beneath despair!

Petals wither into thorns, beauty reshaped into malice!

Fusion Summon! Descend, sovereign of the darkened garden—

Level 11! Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia 'Яeverse!'"

The sky itself split apart. A colossal black pillar shot down like a divine punishment, slamming into the field. Shadows spilled forth, choking out the light, as if night had devoured the arena.

From that abyss, she emerged.

Cecilia—yet not Cecilia. Her once-pristine white and green Musketeer uniform now bled into a twisted mix of pale black and bone-white, laced with veins of crimson corruption crawling across her skin and fabric. Her eyes, once filled with kindness, now glowed a merciless scarlet. Her rapier had become a vicious thorned blade, dripping with malevolence, and a black ring of writhing thorns floated behind her, humming with oppressive power.

Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia "Яeverse"

Level 11 / DARK / Bioroid / Fusion / Effect / Limit Break

ATK: 3500 / DEF: 3000

The duel stage groaned under the sheer force of her arrival. Even Sora faltered, his smugness faltering as his monsters growled uneasily in the presence of the corrupted Musketeer.

"She's... completely twisted..." Ruri whispered, clutching her chest.

Ryuki's fists clenched. "Damn it, Yuri... you crossed the line."

Aichi's gaze hardened, shadows of past trauma reflected in his eyes. "So it begins again..."

But Yuri only grinned, his tone cruel, savoring their fear. "This... this is where the duel truly starts."

As Aichi, Kenji, and Ryuki braced for the worst, Emi's sharp eyes caught something different—something that changed the entire atmosphere.

"Guys! Look at Yur-kuni!" she shouted, pointing toward him. "There are no red marks on his face!"

Everyone's attention snapped toward Yuri. The duelists from the Vanguard world leaned forward, their eyes narrowing as they searched for the telltale crimson stains that once branded every "Яeverse" victim. Yet, his skin remained clear, uncorrupted. The realization drew out a collective breath of relief from Ryuki, Kenji, Aichi, and Christopher.

Rin tilted her head, confused by their sudden change of demeanor. "Ryuki, what are you and the others getting so worked up about?"

Ryuki exhaled, deciding there was no longer any reason to withhold the truth. "What Yuri just summoned... it's not an ordinary card. It's a 'Яeverse' card."

The word seemed to darken the air around them. Sawatari, normally loud and flamboyant, dropped his ego for once. His voice was tight with concern. "A... 'Яeverse' card? What's that supposed to mean?"

Before Ryuki could answer, Aichi stepped in, his tone grave, carrying the weight of bitter memories. "'Яeverse' cards are twisted power. They upgrade a unit, yes—but at a terrible price. They corrupt not only the card itself, but the one who wields it. In our world, it nearly destroyed everything. Once someone loses against a 'Яeverse' card, they too can be 'Яeversed.' It spreads like a plague, an infection of despair and domination."

Faces around the field paled, the significance hitting them like a blade through the heart. Even the bravest duelists among them found their hands trembling at the thought of such corruption seeping into their world.

Aichi continued, his voice softer but no less grim. "Back then, it became a global problem. Entire cities fell into darkness. We were lucky to stop it, and we swore never to allow it again. But now..." His eyes narrowed, fixed on Yuri's field. "How did he even get his hands on such a card?"

Ryuki turned to Satoru. "Satoru, did Asuna include that card in his deck?"

Satoru shook his head instantly, almost offended at the thought. "No. Absolutely not. I never even saw anything like it in her deck."

Aichi's expression tightened. A terrible possibility dawned on him, and when he spoke, everyone could hear the dread. "Then it means his deck... responded to his emotions. Think about it. When Sora taunted him about his mother's deck, Yuri's rage boiled over. His deck must have answered that rage—manifesting a 'Яeverse' card."

Ryuki gave a slow, grim nod. "It wouldn't be the first time a deck answered its user in ways no one could explain. We've all felt it. That moment when you're pushed into a corner and a miracle card appears—the perfect card to turn everything around. Call it hacks, call it fate... but it's real. And now, Yuri's rage has birthed this power."

Silence hung heavy over the spectators. Every duelist present knew that bond with their deck—the miracles they had clung to in dire moments. But seeing Yuri's deck respond with corruption instead of hope chilled them to the core.

Yuri's voice broke the stillness, his tone twisted with new conviction. "When Cecilia 'Яeverse' is Fusion Summoned, she gains 200 ATK for every Level or Rank of your monsters. The total comes to twenty. That's 4,000 extra attack points!"

A cold, thorny aura surged outward as his corrupted monster roared.

Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia "Яeverse"

ATK: 3500 → 7500

Gasps rippled through the watchers. Sora's eyes widened as his lips curled into a grimace. One strike from that monstrosity would obliterate him.

"And that's not all," Yuri continued, his voice edged with venom. "Cecilia 'Яeverse's' effect activates! By sending Paulette and Tatiana to the graveyard, I can check the top four cards of my deck and Special Summon two Musketeers from among them!"

Petals blackened by corruption whirled into a storm. When they cleared, two more figures stood at Yuri's side.

Camellia Musketeer, Tamara

Level 4 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1600 / DEF: 1100

Stokesia Musketeer, Daphne

Level 4 / EARTH / Bioroid / Effect

ATK: 1600 / DEF: 1000

"Battle!" Yuri's voice rose, commanding the corrupted field like a general sending soldiers to war. "Cecilia 'Яeverse,' crush Death Toy Sabre Tiger! And when she attacks, her ability activates once more! I draw and reveal two cards—if they share the same Level, every monster you control gains three Thorn Counters!"

With a sharp motion, Yuri drew. Two glowing cards flipped in his hand—Rebecca and Rachelle, both Level 4.

Yuri's lips curved into a smile that made even his allies shiver. "Luck's on my side this time. All of your monsters are shackled by three Thorn Counters each!"

From the corrupted earth erupted black, barbed vines, wrapping around Sora's monsters like a merciless executioner. The beasts roared and writhed, their limbs ensnared and pulled taut.

Sora's body tensed as he darted across the jagged terrain, leaping from one floating stone to another. His hand snapped forward, seizing an Action Card mid-motion.

"Action Magic: Evasion!" he shouted, his voice carrying defiance.

A bright light erupted, and Sabre Tiger narrowly twisted away from Cecilia's devastating strike. Her corrupted blade cleaved through the earth instead, splitting stone as the shockwave sent shards flying.

Sora landed, exhaling a long breath. He had survived the monster's first assault—but only just. His heart pounded violently in his chest. If that attack had landed, he wouldn't have stood a chance.

"You think I was done, Sora? No, I'm just getting started! Let the flowers bloom in the battlefield and let your blade strike through the hearts of those who trample you! Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia 'Яeverse'! Limit Break!"

The very air around Cecilia seemed to distort as her eyes glowed a deep, menacing crimson. A circular sigil of dark violet energy formed above her head, pulsing like a heart as the sound of shattering glass rippled through the Volcano Zone. The oppressive aura pushed against the flames and heat of the environment itself, commanding silence from even the erupting lava streams.

"Limit Break as well?!" Ryuki exclaimed from the sidelines, his eyes widening in recognition of the raw power Yuri was about to unleash.

Yuya, still catching his breath from watching the duel escalate turn after turn, blinked in confusion. "Limit Break? What's that?"

Kenji folded his arms, his tone calm but firm as he explained. "Limit Break is the trump card of certain units. It's powerful—devastating, even—but it demands risk. To activate it, your Life Points must be at 1000 or less. It means stepping on the razor's edge, daring defeat in order to claim overwhelming strength."

As Kenji's words sank in, the non-Cardfight veterans of the group—Yuya, Yuzu, Gongenzaka, and the others—stared in awe. They had seen Fusion Summons, Pendulum Summons, and other techniques, but Limit Break felt like another beast entirely. A skill that only revealed its fangs when one was cornered, transforming desperation into dominance.

Yuri raised his hand sharply, snapping his fingers. "Cecilia 'Яeverse's' Limit Break—activate! Whenever she attacks, successful or not, I target two cards on my field and... Lock!"

A sinister pulse of black light burst from Cecilia, and in an instant, Daphne and Tamara were engulfed in dark orbs. Two black rings circled around their prison-like spheres, twisting and constricting. The Musketeers let out faint cries before their voices were silenced, their forms dissolving back into card state.

"W-What did Yuri just do?!" Barret asked, alarm etched across his face.

Aichi, however, knew the sight all too well. His expression grew grim, the memories of countless battles against Link Joker flashing across his mind. "That... was Lock. An ability that seals away a card's power completely. When a unit is locked, it cannot act until the end of its controller's next turn. From the opponent's view, it's suffocating—they're left utterly helpless. But for the one wielding it? Lock is a tool, a weapon, a gateway to further advantage. Only 'Яeverse' units possess this ability."

The explanation drew quiet gasps. Even the usually unflappable Ryuki narrowed his eyes, recognizing the sheer cruelty behind such a skill. But no one dared interrupt—the duel had become too intense to miss even a second.

"And now," Yuri continued, his voice as smooth as silk yet dripping with venom, "Cecilia 'Яeverse' can attack again! Strike, and drown this battlefield in despair!"

Cecilia lunged, her rapier gleaming with violet energy, aiming straight for Sora's Death Toy Scissors Tiger.

"Not so fast!" Sora bolted for the nearest Action Card, his fingers brushing the heated volcanic ground until they gripped the shimmering card. He activated it without hesitation. "Action Magic: Magma Armor! My monster might be destroyed, but I won't take a single point of damage!"

The demonic tiger roared as the magma shield briefly encased its form, softening the killing blow. But the effort was futile. Cecilia's blade pierced through, and the monster disintegrated into fragments of teal flame, leaving Sora with nothing but dwindling options.

Yuri smirked. "Your Action Card saved you from damage... but it cannot save the rest of your monsters. With your Tiger gone, every other Death Toy loses 900 ATK."

The weakening effect rippled across Sora's field like a withering curse.

Death Toy Scissors Bear

ATK: 4300 → 3000

Death Toy Scissors Tiger

ATK: 4500 → 3200

The once-mighty frontline now looked fragile, trembling under Cecilia's gaze.

"Now... the finale." Yuri's eyes gleamed. "Cecilia 'Яeverse's' final Limit Break effect! After her second strike, she returns to my Extra Deck. And in exchange, I may call upon her purified self—resurrected, stronger, and blessed with newfound power. Come forth once again... White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia!"

Cecilia's dark aura shattered, her form glowing brilliantly as if a cocoon of corruption was being broken. The black vines that once bound her dissolved into light, replaced by radiant lilies that bloomed in midair. From within the brilliance emerged the true Cecilia—her white dress fluttering, her rapier gleaming like starlight, her expression serene yet resolute.

White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia

Level 8 / EARTH / Bioroid / Fusion / Effect / Limit Break

ATK: 3000 → 4000 / DEF: 2500

The spectators were left awestruck. To see a corrupted warrior redeemed so suddenly—it was as though the duel itself had staged a miracle. Even Yuya, usually outspoken, could only whisper, "Beautiful..."

"Battle!" Yuri's voice cracked like a whip. "White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia—strike down Death Toy Scissors Bear! And to seal this victory, I activate my Quick-Play Spell: Rally of Thorns! During the Battle Phase, I may target one Musketeer on my field, granting them 500 ATK for every Thorn Counter present! I count six. Which means... an additional 3000 attack!"

A thunderous gasp erupted from the onlookers.

White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia

ATK: 4000 → 7000

Her rapier blazed with carnation-pink light, brighter and brighter until it rivaled the volcanic glow around them. Yuri thrust his arm forward, and his voice rang with finality. "Finish this, Cecilia! White Lily Meteorite!"

The strike was instantaneous. Cecilia's blade sliced through the Death Toy Scissors Bear, splitting it in half before detonating in a burst of radiant energy. The monster disintegrated with a pained roar, the shockwave knocking Sora back as his Life Points plummeted.

Sora: 1400 → 0

Winner: Kusakabe Yuri

Silence lingered for a heartbeat. Then the battlefield shimmered as the illusion of flames and magma dissolved, signifying the end of the Action Duel.

Cecilia descended softly, her rapier fading to petals. She turned to Yuri with a warm, approving smile—the kind a mother might give her child—and gently placed her hand upon his head. For a moment, Yuri's hard expression softened, his eyes betraying something deeper, something vulnerable. But as he reached up, the vision vanished, leaving only air.

He lowered his hand slowly, closing his eyes with a quiet sigh. When he opened them again, the softness was gone, replaced by sharp steel. He looked down at Sora, sprawled on the ground, his pride shattered.

"That," Yuri said coldly, "is what you get for mocking my mother's deck. Chew on that, Academia dog."

With that, he turned away, his coat billowing slightly as he walked off the battlefield. The others remained silent, the weight of his words and the ferocity of his duel still lingering heavily in the air. Cecilia's lingering glow faded into memory, but her impact—on both Yuri and those watching—remained carved into their hearts.

And as Yuri left, the petals of white lilies drifted into nothingness, marking the end of yet another duel that would not soon be forgotten.

-----

The damage Sora had endured was too much, and before Yuya or anyone else could do anything, his body glowed with a familiar light. It was the automatic recall system of Academia pulling him back to safety.

"No! Sora!" Yuya cried out, his hand outstretched as if he could stop the inevitable. But the boy was already gone—vanished in a flash, leaving nothing but fading motes of light where he had stood.

Yuya's breath trembled, but there was no time to grieve. On the opposite side of the field, the final echoes of battle shook the Volcano Zone. Shun's ace—Raidraptors: Revolution Falcon—swept through the air like a predator unleashed. Its talons and wings shredded the last of the Obelisk Force, their Life Points plummeting to zero all at once. The enemy duelists collapsed across the blackened rock, their duel disks sparking in defeat.

"REVOLUTION AIR RAID!!" Shun declared coldly as Revolution Falcon began to bombard the Obelisk Force and sealing them the win.

The announcement felt like a hammer striking the end of a war drum. The battlefield grew quiet, broken only by the heavy breathing of the victors. Dennis let out a theatrical laugh, throwing his arms wide.

"Ha! That's how you do it, Sawatari!" he cried, his grin too wide for the soot on his face.

"Of course!" Sawatari puffed out his chest, battered but unbowed. "Victory goes to the great Sawatari once again!"

Their antics drew faint smiles from the others. Relief washed over the group in an almost tangible wave. The Volcano Zone was secure. The invasion had failed. For the first time in hours, the weight pressing on their shoulders seemed to lessen.

Ryuki, however, had his eyes on someone else. He walked over to Yuri, his expression serious but not hostile.

"So?" Ryuki asked evenly. "How did it feel—using your mother's deck?"

Yuri lowered his duel disk and let out a slow breath. For once, his smirk was absent. "...Uplifting," he admitted. His tone carried no mockery, only sincerity. "Strange, really. It was like fighting alongside her. A new experience... one I didn't think I'd ever feel."

As he spoke, Yuya approached from the side. Yuri noticed and, for a moment, their gazes locked. Not with hostility, but something heavier. He reached into his jacket and produced a card, holding it between two fingers.

"Here," Yuri said simply. "I think you should take this."

Yuya blinked in surprise. Slowly, he accepted the card. When he looked down, his eyes widened in shock.

"...Starve Venom Fusion Dragon." His voice caught in his throat.

Ryuki's brows furrowed. "Why? That card was your soul, Yuri. Why give it away?"

Yuri closed his eyes briefly. "Because it asked me to. Starve Venom wanted to fight alongside him—alongside Yuya. My path lies elsewhere now. It's time I moved forward without clinging to what I was."

His words silenced the group. Yuya stared down at the card, his grip tightening as emotions swirled inside him. He knew what it meant for Yuri to part with it.

Then, footsteps echoed. Shun stepped forward, his eyes sharp as blades. He stopped in front of Yuri, his body rigid with restrained fury.

"I'll never forgive you," Shun declared, his voice low but powerful. "For taking Ruri... for the fear and pain you caused my sister, and everyone else." His fists trembled at his sides.

Yuri met his glare without flinching, only listening.

"But..." Shun continued, after a long pause, "...I saw how you fought. I saw how you stood today. If you truly intend to walk a different path... then I'll let you go."

The statement hung in the air like a fragile truce. Yuri gave only a small nod, neither proud nor ashamed—simply resolute.

It seemed, for a moment, that the chaos was finally settling. Relief, reconciliation, and the first glimmers of hope.

Then, a mocking voice slithered into the silence.

"Hm~ looks like I'm late to the party."

Everyone snapped to attention. From the jagged shadows of the volcanic rock, a lone figure stepped forward. His hair was unkempt, his military uniform hanging loosely on his frame as though he'd stopped caring how it looked. But it was his eyes—flat, lifeless, uncaring—that sent a chill down their spines.

Serena's breath caught in her throat. Barret's fists clenched, his teeth grinding audibly.

"No... him," Serena whispered.

Ryuki's gaze sharpened. "Who?"

Barret answered, his voice filled with distaste. "Gerard. One of Academia's elites. He's powerful... and ruthless."

Ryuki immediately stepped forward, putting himself between Gerard and the others. "Then I'll face him."

But before he could ready himself, the air itself shifted. Gerard's body stiffened, and then his dead eyes ignited with a cruel, unnatural light. The corners of his lips curled into a twisted smirk.

It wasn't Gerard anymore.

"Ahhh... much better," a dark voice purred through Gerard's lips. "Finally, a stage worthy of me."

Ryuki, Aichi, Kenji, and Christopher felt it instantly—an aura unlike anything they'd known. Wrong. Corrupt. Familiar only in the worst ways.

"Gastille..." Ryuki muttered. His hand shook as he recognized the presence.

The others froze, but Gastille only chuckled, his borrowed body moving with eerie confidence. From Gerard's coat he produced a deck box and displayed it mockingly.

The sight hit like a lightning strike.

"That's...!" Christopher gasped, eyes wide.

"Impossible..." Aichi whispered.

"Where did you get that Vanguard deck!?" Ryuki's shout thundered with anger, louder and harsher than the others had ever heard from him. His fury boiled over as his glare burned into Gastille.

Gastille laughed, low and cruel. "If you want answers, little monarch, you'll have to earn them. Come and fight me."

The tension was suffocating. Slowly, deliberately, Ryuki removed his duel disk and set it aside. He reached into his coat and retrieved a deck box—the familiar sigil of Gear Chronicle emblazoned upon it. His choice was made.

The others watched in confusion. "What's going on?" Dennis asked, blinking rapidly.

Aichi stepped forward, his voice steady. "This won't be a duel. It's a Cardfight. Another game—our game."

Christopher nodded gravely. "And if you've never seen one before, prepare yourselves. This will be nothing like a Duel Monsters battle."

As if on cue, holographic boards shimmered into existence before Ryuki and Gastille. Circles of light—the Vanguard and Rearguard circles—formed with perfect precision. Both men placed a card at the center of their boards.

At the Command Center, Reiji watched the unfolding scene with narrowed eyes. "A cardfight...?" He leaned forward, intrigued. "Patch the feed to maximum resolution. I want to see this clearly."

Technicians scrambled to comply. Across the monitors, the two opponents locked gazes—Ryuki with focused fury, Gastille with mocking hunger.

And then, as one, they declared:

"Stand up! Thy Vanguard!" Ryuki's voice rang out, filled with determination.

"Stand up. Z Vanguard." Gastille's reply dripped menace, his tone twisted and cold.

Two avatars appeared upon their boards, the spirits of their chosen decks manifesting.

And so it began—the clash not of duelists, but cardfighters. A battle where the fate of the Standard Dimension would hang in the balance.
