Chapter 23 - Who's The Father

Isabella~

"Wh...what type of question is this? He is, of course, my son." My voice faltered upon hearing his query.

It unfolded in the manner that frightened me the most. I did everything in my power to keep Xavier from seeing my son, but fate had other plans. Xavier eventually became acquainted with my son.

"Bella, I am asking who's the father of Alan." His eyes are filled with suspicion, and his tone is dominating.

"Mr. Thompson, please get out of my house immediately. You have no right to inquire about my personal life." I gestured toward the open hall door.

"I'll leave when you respond to my questions." His rage was evident in his voice.

I am well aware of his dominating nature. He won't leave until I provide him with a satisfactory response. Even if I'm not prepared to handle the situation right now, I must answer his inquiries.

"Alan is my son, and his father is out of town. When he gets back, I'll introduce him. It's too late, so please leave my house now." Even after receiving his response, he continued to stand like a mountain despite my orders to leave my house.

"Why are you lying to me? Was my mistake so big that you chose to conceal my son from me for so many years?" A flash of pain filled his gaze.

"Who told you that he is your son?" I raised my brow at him in surprise.

His sudden assertion of dominance over my son caught me off guard.

"Everything about Alan, including his birthdate and blue eyes, makes it obvious that he is my son; thus, I don't need to know this from anyone." His voice makes it sound like he's about to claim paternity for my son and abduct him at any second. Before he tries to take custody of my son, I have to stop him.

"Alan is not your kid, Mr. Thompson; he inherited his blue eyes from his dad. By the way, you're not the only one with blue eyes, and about the date of his birth, I should clarify that he is just four years old. Being a child, Alan was unaware of the consequences of his incorrect calculation." I tried to clear up his misunderstanding.

"Oh, if that was the case, then why are you trying to keep me away from your son? Is this because you fear that I might steal your son if we ever meet?" He walked dangerously close to me.

"Why should I be afraid of you? You have no authority over my son, so why would you attempt to take him away?"I moved backward, noticing his veins tighten due to anger.

"Why do you always have a terrified expression on your face when I ask you about Alan or your husband? What are you trying to hide from me?" He kept coming in my direction.

I continued to retreat until my back collided with the wall. I now have nowhere to flee from his questions, as he has already ensnared me within his embrace.

"Answer me, Bella. Today, I refuse to leave this place until you reveal the truth, and please refrain from threatening me for not defending my case. The truth is far more important to me than any murder case." His bloodshot red eyes stared into mine as he firmly grasped my shoulder.

I shuddered at the sight of his apparent fury. I am well aware that he won't allow me to live in peace until he discovers the truth. This time, the matter is much more deeply personal than professional, and I must handle it as Isabella rather than Veronica. I closed my eyes to get the confidence to answer his inquiries, then opened them to confidently look him in the eyes.

"Xavier, you are right; I hide my son from you because I want to keep him away from my dark past. I don't want my son to become a failure like you, who has failed in every aspect of his life solely due to his ego. If you're wondering why I'm afraid to discuss my personal life with you, it's because I don't want you around me. If it's not related to that case, I don't even want to cross paths with you again." In one breath, I release my pent-up resentment toward him.

"No matter how frustrated you were with me, Bella, it didn't change the fact that he is my son." He was holding my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. Seeing him so close to me made my heart race.

No, I must remain strong in this situation; I can not melt.

"To clear up any misunderstandings, Xavier, I will show you my son's DNA testing tomorrow. But for now, please leave my house and never return." I made an effort to free my chin from his grip.

"Ok, if you are so confidently claiming that he is not my son, then maybe it's my misunderstanding, but trust me, if my suspicion is right, then I will take my son with me." He threatened me.

"Mr. Thompson, first free yourself from your wife's murder case; only then can you think about fighting another case. I feel suffocated in your presence, so please leave my place immediately." Hearing his threats filled my heart with resentment. I had assumed that he had changed after receiving his karma, but today, I noticed a hint of the vicious, old Xavier Thompson.

"Isabella, I hate you." He uncaged me by removing his arms around me and then furiously punched on the wall, causing his fist to bleed.

"I hate you even more, Xavier." I held his hand, dragged him outside my house, and locked the door after kicking him out of my house.

I sat against the closed door and sobbed aloud, recalling his repeated threats. I need to speak with him, as only he can provide me with advice on how to keep my son safe from Xavier. I frantically dialed his number on my phone.

"Do you have problems falling asleep, Bella, or are you missing me?" I can feel his tender words instantly relieving my wounded heart.

"When he caught sight of Alan, he threatened to take him away." I confided in him about my emotional distress.

"What? How did that bastard find his way into the house? Why did you ever accept his help?" He sounds both worried and frustrated at the same time.

"I took his help because of Alan, but I didn't know that he would threaten me after meeting Alan." I burst into tears again, covering my face with my palm.

"Bella, calm down; you don't need to be scared. I will be arriving soon, so he won't have the opportunity to threaten you." He tried to calm me down.

"How will you meet him?" Uncertain, I asked him.

"That's left to me. Now, get a good night's sleep and concentrate on your work. I already asked you not to get involved in his case, but you stubbornly chose to defend him now, See the consequences of helping the venomous snake, you still have time to back out of his case." On one hand, he was trying to comfort me, but on the other, he was still expressing his displeasure at having chosen Xavier's case.

"I am sorry, but I can't leave his case." I wiped off my tears and told him clearly about my decision.

"Then keep him away from my son since I don't want any chaos in Alan's life." After issuing me a warning, he ended the call.

I went to my room and then opened the file to check Alana's DNA report. I will show Xavier this report tomorrow to dispel his doubts and ensure he never considers stealing my son from me. I curl up on my bed and close my eyes in an attempt to sleep, hoping to forget the painful experience of today.
