Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 – The Call of Chaos

Elyno climbed the cracked stairwell, the dust curling around his boots like old ghosts. Each step felt heavier than the last, and he realized that somewhere deep inside, he had been waiting for this moment—the moment when everything would finally become real.

Sixteen floors of darkened hallways ended in a door warped by water stains. The number "1603" was barely legible. He touched the cold metal doorknob and stood still, breathing in the stale air of the corridor.

Behind him, Pex shifted, his footsteps restless. And just beyond Pex, Arven hovered in the doorway, her bare feet pressed together, her small hands gripping the strap of her satchel as if it were the only solid thing in her life.

"This is it," Elyno murmured. His voice was hoarse.

Pex tilted his head, a skeptical grin flickering over his lips.

"You mean…this old place is our grand headquarters?"

"For now," Elyno said quietly. He pushed the door open.

A cloud of dust rose to greet them. Faded wallpaper peeled in long, curling strips. Cracks ran like spiderwebs across the ceiling. The windows were so stained that only a thin gray light spilled onto the floorboards.

But none of it mattered. He saw only possibility.

Arven crept in behind him, her eyes wide. She looked younger in the dim light, as if she hadn't yet decided whether to be afraid or relieved.

Pex kicked a loose floorboard, then folded his arms.

"Well," he said, "I've slept in worse."

Elyno's lips curved in the smallest hint of a smile.

"Welcome home."

The Klan Application

Pex drew in a slow breath and raised his wrist. A shimmering system panel unfolded above his palm, casting silver light over their faces.

[KLAN APPLICATION FORM]

Minimum Members: 3

Klan Name: Chaos

Founder: Elyno

Arven's breath hitched. She turned to Elyno, as if needing reassurance that this was real. He only nodded once, solemn and calm.

Her hand lifted—hesitant, trembling. A single tap on the confirmation icon.

Pex followed, tapping the same button.

When Elyno pressed his palm to the panel, the world seemed to pause.

A narrow beam of pure white light erupted from the roof of the building, piercing the clouds like a spear. Somewhere far above, the watching gods shifted their attention.

Arven gasped and stumbled back a step. For a heartbeat, her eyes brimmed with awe.

"I've…never belonged anywhere," she whispered.

Elyno looked at her, and for the first time in days, he felt something close to peace.

The Alley

He left them inside to explore. Sometimes the weight of so many new bonds pressed too sharply against his ribs. He needed air.

The alley outside was narrow, lined with broken crates and rusted lanterns. Elyno leaned against the cold bricks, feeling the chill bite into his spine.

Above him, faint glimmers of godly panels hovered like translucent banners. Watching. Recording. Waiting.

A voice coiled through his mind—deep, amused, as old as the darkness itself.

"You think you are building something new," Kaos murmured. "But in the end, all clans become chains."

"Maybe," Elyno whispered. "But I'll forge my own."

"We will see."

Silence reclaimed the alley. He closed his eyes and exhaled.

The Assignment

He returned to the apartment to find Pex peering over Arven's shoulder, brows drawn tight.

"What's wrong?" Elyno asked.

Arven's hands were shaking. She slowly turned the system panel so he could see.

Numbers glowed in sharp relief.

[STAT PANEL – ARVEN]

Level: 55

Magic Power: 120

Endurance: 40

Agility: 70

Beneath it, a fresh notification pulsed red:

KAOS QUESTS

1️⃣ Run 100 kilometers

2️⃣ Perform 1,000 push-ups

3️⃣ Slay 1,000 Level 3 zombies

Issued by: Kaos

Her lips parted, but no words came. Finally, she choked out, "If…I fail these…will he erase me?"

Elyno stepped closer until she had no choice but to meet his eyes.

"No. He won't erase you," he said gently. "But he will expect you to try."

Pex let out a low whistle. "These numbers…you're stronger than half the established hunters."

Arven swallowed, her gaze flickering back to the impossible list. "I've never even killed a single monster by myself."

Elyno thought of the first time he had faced death—how he had felt the world tilt under his feet, how he had chosen to swing his dagger anyway.

"You will," he said. "And you won't be alone."

Arven closed her eyes. Her shoulders trembled, but when she looked up, something had changed. A flicker of steel behind the fear.

A Quiet Moment

The hours that followed were quiet. They cleaned the old apartment in silence, sweeping up glass and peeling wallpaper. By dawn, the living room floor was almost bare.

Elyno sat with his back against the cracked wall, watching the first hints of sunrise crawl across Arven's hair.

Somewhere deep inside, he knew Kaos was still watching. Approving, perhaps. Or simply amused.

He didn't care. For the first time in weeks, he felt the fragile beginnings of a purpose he could call his own.

And he intended to defend it—no matter how many gods had to watch.
