Chapter 2 - The Start of Something New

Sunlight began to peak through the window of Shawn's bedroom, beginning to illuminate it. Shawn woke up with a yawn. He got out of bed and stretched out.

"Today's the day!" Shawn said to himself. He couldn't wait to head down to the Adventurer's Guild to receive his class. It was every kid's dream and it was about to become a reality for Shawn. He quickly got clothed, fastened his new sword to his belt, combed his hair, and made a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, a slice of bread, and a glass of milk.

He ate every bite and swiftly headed out the door. He didn't want to waste any time on getting to the Adventurers Guild. He ran down the streets of Harot, passing by his neighbors and waving. He caught up to his friend Gabriel on the way there.

"Hey, Gabriel! You excited for today?" Shawn said as he reached him.

"Dude, you know it, been waiting on this day my whole life!" Gabriel exclaimed. "What class do you think you'll get?"

"I'm hoping for a melee class of some sort." Shawn said, nodding towards his new sword. "My dad made it yesterday for me."

"Dude that things awesome!" Gabriel said looking at it. "I hope you get a swordsman class, that would fit you perfectly!"

"Yeah, I'm hoping for that too, what class are you wanting?" Shawn said as they rounded a corner, the Adventurer's guild was now in sight.

"I want to get a melee class too. Maybe something with a hammer or a big sword!" Gabriel said, flexing his arm. He was a fairly muscular guy, so a class like that would suit him best.

"Yeah, that would be great for you!" Shawn said with a slight chuckle, looking at the line ahead of them. It was full of 16 year olds, big and small. Some were scrawny, some were muscular meatheads. Boys and girls alike, all were there for one thing, to receive a class. "Well here we are, I won't lie, I'm a little bit nervous."

"Yeah, me too, but whatever class we get, we'll make our own" Gabriel said. They moved up in line and a guard handed them a book and asked them to write their names down. They did, and moved on in line.

Shawn was beginning to get more nervous and excited at the same time. He couldn't wait to get a class, but at the same time, he knew he couldn't change his class once he received it. He just hoped it would be something good.

Shawn was now second in line to go into the Adventurer's Guild's class room and gain his class. The boy in front of him was ushered in and walked out 2 minutes later with a huge smile on his face. Next up was Shawn's turn.

The guard opened the door and gestured Shawn in with a "good luck" and closed it behind him. Inside the room was a magic circle with many intricate designs spanning the whole floor and a large crystalline orb floating in the center of the room. Shawn gazed in awe at it for a moment and stepped forwards.

'This is it' Shawn thought. He took another step forwards and the magic circle began to glow a bright red on the floor. Shawn almost stepped back in surprise, but he continued forwards and placed his palm on the orb. The magic circle began to flow even brighter and the orb began to turn from its crystal white to a sickly grey, seeping out a grey mist that flowed towards Shawn.

Shawn stepped back in shock but found his hand was stuck to the orb. He decided this was part of the process and began to calm himself and let the mist flow towards him. It slowly seeped into him through his pores. Shawn hated the feeling, it just felt wrong.

'Something doesn't feel right. Surely this can't be normal' He thought. The mist continued seeping in as Shawn struggled against the orb. He could feel it seeping in and flowing throughout his body. It wasn't painful, just gross. It felt like slime flowing under his skin. As painlessly as it had arrived, it went away. He felt it all move into his core and the feeling faded. In the corner of his vision, he now saw Congratulations, Shawn Draper, on your new class, Necromancer.
