Chapter 34 - The Summon

The summons came precisely a day after the firing squad. An old-school, formal request, delivered by a man in a sharp suit with steel eyes. It wasn't a friendly invitation but an order, disguised as a request, from the Council.

The old guard or whatever they called it; the other heads of the major cartels who, for all their supposed neutrality, had been watching me, waiting for me to falter. They'd heard about Castillo, of course, and Luciano Barone. The news would have flown like poisoned darts across the country, reaching every ear that mattered.

I had no doubt that they wanted answers, they wanted to know why I seemed to be spiralling out of control. My initial instinct was to tell them all to go to hell because I was the one who just dealt with a rat in my own house, who nearly got taken out. I certainly owed them no explanation. But Elias, in his quiet, insistent way, reasoned otherwise.
