"So what is Haki?" Robin asked what the others were thinking as they all gathered on the main deck of the ship.
"Haki…Haki is kind of a mystery power. There's three types, but you have to be born with one of those. It's called Conquerors Haki, if you aren't born with it then you don't have it. If you do have it…well it can be very useful. I might give you a demonstration of it on the next island but one of it's common uses is pretty much exerting your will over others and it can cause them to pass out." Luffy said trying to think of how to describe it to them as he paced a bit in front of them while they stared at him curiously.
"The two more common forms of it however are Observation and Armament. Observation…it can have a lot of uses. You can use it to sense other people, sense on coming attacks, even feel emotions and if you train it very very hard you can even look into the future a bit." Luffy said brightening up since he could explain that a little better.
"See into the future?" Usopp asked and he seemed to be the most taken with this kind of Haki. He was a sniper after all so it made sense that his Observation would be more useful to him than Armament. He'd be a long range fighter after all and being able to sense his targets even if he couldn't physically see them…badass!
"I know it's possible! I can't do it myself, but Papa Kata can peer into the future about ten seconds! It doesn't sound like much but you can see and dodge attacks that haven't even happened yet and know answers to questions before you even ask them! It's very useful!" Luffy said adding in the last bits at seeing the bored or disappointed looks on some of the crews faces at hearing that it was only by ten seconds.
"Armament Haki is pretty much defense and offense at once! You can use it to have attacks bounce off of you if you use it right or use it to make your muscles and therefore hits or kicks a lot harder! You can even move it into things like swords or bullets to make them do more damage. The reason Uncle Hawky's blade is always black is because his Armament Haki was used on it so much that it permanently became black!" Luffy said and he definitely had Zoro's attention there with that information about Hawkeye. So Hawkeye used this power? Then he was definitely going to learn how to do it better.
"So the times when I was able to tell an attack was coming without being able to see it or hear it?" Robin asked curiously and she was definitely interested in learning both of the Haki forms she could learn.
"Probably using Observation Haki without knowing it!" Luffy said brightly and knowing that at least it would be easier for him to teach her how to use Observation since she already had unlocked it a little bit.
"So how do we unlock these powers?" Zoro asked grunting and wanting to know how exactly he could do it and channel this armament Haki into his swords.
"Well…everyone does it a different way depending on the type of person they are. For most of the family we're trained from a young age to at least be able to use Armament Haki to protect ourselves from any rival or attacking pirates or marines." Luffy said and he tried to think of a way to teach them but…well…it wasn't exactly easy to teach something he only had base control and knowledge of himself.
"For Observation the best I can describe how to unlock it is by meditating. That's how most people unlock it or by trying to focus really hard on something in their blind spot and trying to see it. For me one of my aunts helped me unlock mine by having me sit or stand blindfolded and she'd swing a stick at me until I could sense the attack coming and dodge it. But that's because I wasn't too good at the whole sit or stand still and focus thing. Gotta be honest with you all. Out of my Haki…my Observation is my weakest point." Luffy said admitting that without shame and the rest of the crew almost face faulted but most of the normal ones were wondering what the hell kind of training involved letting himself be attacked while blindfolded.
"Don't get me wrong. I can still sense incoming attacks without opening my eyes or even seeing them coming and I can still feel people's emotions and all which most people can't do but I can only take a quick glimpse into the future by about two seconds and I probably don't train it as much as I should." Luffy said and he frowned as he thought of that. He really should try to train his Observation more once he got the others started on their own training.
"Armament though. That's kind of like pure will power and there's two different mentalities to unlock that I know of. One where you want to protect yourself from damage and therefore cover your body in willpower to keep from getting hurt…and the other where you really really want to hit someone you normally couldn't." Luffy said moving along to the other Haki and making them all look confused.
"Pardon the interruption but what do you mean hit someone you normally couldn't?" Robin asked tilting her head at him a little bit and making him shrug a bit.
"Well those who have devil fruits classed as Logia and some zoans even. Like my papa Kata. He ate the mochi devilfruit and it's a logia which means he's entirely made of mochi. That means that if you tried to hit him with just a normal punch not only can he see it coming with his Observation Haki but he also wouldn't even be hit by the punch. It would literally just go right through him. There are plenty of other logia's too! Fire, smoke, sand, lightning, ice, magma, light, shadows….all of them can't be hit unless you have either sea stone or Armament Haki, and Armament Haki is a lot more likely to find and use than getting ahold of sea stone." Luffy said trying to explain it as best as he could and hoping he was doing a good job, he noticed how Robin's eyes narrowed a bit at the sand part being mentioned and she seemed very eager to learn this type now than she had before.
"Mama Branch said she unlocked her Armament Haki when she really wanted to protect Aunt Broye from an incoming attack and took it for her, fully knowing she was likely going to die but wanted to protect her twin. That's definitely one way, a lot more instinctive and dangerous way, to unlock your Armament but I honestly don't like the thought of having you all unlock yours in that manner." Luffy said frowning and making the others look a bit surprised and a bit queasy at the thought of unlocking their Haki in that way.
"So for Armament we'll be going with the way I unlocked my Haki! Really really wanting to punch someone and have it hurt! You guys can even practice on me!" Luffy said with a bright smile and they all looked shocked and confused.
"But we can hit you." Sanji said looking a bit thrown as he stared at the rubber brained captain.
"Shishishishi! You can but guess what? I'm made of rubber!" Luffy said laughing and Robin immediately blushed a little bit while Nami scowled and had a small blush of her own.
"Being made of rubber doesn't sound really useful at first but look at it like this. I'm immune to lightning. I'm immune to bullets that aren't made of sea stone or coated in Armament Haki. I can inflate and make myself bigger or make myself smaller. I am immune to blunt damage." Luffy listed off some of his abilities and the crew seemed shocked by just how useful it would be to be made of rubber.
"Which means that even if you do hit me, I can't feel it! You can hit me as much as you want and I won't even notice most likely! You'd need to unlock your Armament in order to hurt me! So we're going to use that to our advantage and have you all practice hitting me until I actually take damage from the punch or kick! And no Zoro you can't cut me with the sword yet, that's cheating." Luffy said and they all nodded in understanding at this. It did make sense after all.
Little did they know just how much of a task master that Luffy could be. After all he was raised by a yonko crew with three other yonko's and their crews being family.
So of course he was a sadistic taskmaster while training.
