Chapter 8 - Start or Stop

Imran finished Dhuhr prayer before Sawa one o'clock. Afterwards, somehow, something crossed his mind—there was an old room on a deserted path away from Baba Qasim's house. After parking his motorcycle, Imran looked towards Baba Qasim's house. His only purpose was to get a glimpse of that maiden before meeting her and decide her route. Nearly an hour passed, but she didn't come. Impatient, Imran left the room and headed towards Baba Qasim's house. As soon as he reached Baba Qasim's shrine, he was stunned. Baba Qasim was glaring at him with angry eyes.

Baba Qasim, in a wrathful tone, said, "You've come spying. If you wanted to spy, then why did you call her? Whom are you suspicious of—me or her? She has gone crying, and maybe she'll never come again. So, pack your things and leave here, and never show me your face again."

After this, Baba Qasim went into a room while Imran stood there, bewildered and silent, when someone placed a hand on his shoulder.

When imran turned around, he saw Baba Waqas's special servant, Husayn, paying attention to him. For a moment, imran felt as if she had returned, the one whose sight imran yearned for, but it was just Baba's servant. Imran wet eyes brimmed with tears, and just then, Husayn folded his hands and said, " imran, Baba, right now you should go. Sain is very angry. I have never seen Baba Sahib so angry, but I do know this: Baba Sahib loves you very much, so if you come back some other time, you can pacify Baba Sahib. I hope he will surely forgive you."

مُعان then told Husayn, "No, Husayn, I will not go until I present my explanation. If I leave from here today, I may never come back again." Husayn tried to explain to imran for a long time, but imran had taken an oath, as if today was the last day—never to leave.

Wiping away his tears, imran sat in the guest area, waiting for Baba Sahib to arrive. Until the Asr prayer call, Baba Waqas did not come out of his chamber. imran made wudu and prepared to pray. After completing the praappro imran prayed with sobs, breaking down in tears. Once he finished, he turned to leave, but Baba Waqas was standing there. imran eyes filled with emotion upon seeing Baba Waqas. Imran approached Baba instantly; Baba Waqas pulled imran close and embraced him, saying, "You turned out to be quite foolish. Now, you're crying yourself and making me cry too." He had resolved in his heart not to forgive this mistake, but due to imran condition and helplessness, he couldn't hold back.

"Alright, I also need to pray now. Sit here for a while so I can perform my prayer," Baba Waqas said. imran moved away from Baba Waqas and sat on a mat, while Baba Waqas began his prayer.

imran watched Baba Sahib perform his prayer and thought to himself that truly, Baba Sahib always prays. It seems as if, while praying, he becomes unaware of the world and everything else. Once, imran had asked Baba Waqas why he didn't pray like this. Baba recited a couplet then:

> "Until I was sold, no one asked about me,

> You bought me and made me worthless."

When imran asked Baba Waqas what this meant, he explained, "Son, our prayers used to be very dull. For twenty years, I performed rituals that were just show, just pretenses. Over time, I learned the proper way. And then, a perfect one's glance fell upon me; in a single look, I was transformed. From pretense to skill, and from skill to color.

We also got colored, and this bliss and ecstasy are the result of just one glance. Just once, in the sight of that perfect person, I received something I could never even wish for — not even in a lifetime of asking. It's so rare that it cannot be contained in a single bowl, and so abundant that it starts to feel limited."

When imran asked what makes Baba reach such a stage, Baba Waqas simply said, "Only manners." Nothing else. It was the etiquette of the elders that elevated his fortune and made him hopeful of a gentle gaze, of a saintly glance.

After finishing his prayer, Baba Waqas sat on a cot and called limran over. They sat in silence for a few moments. Then, Baba Waqas broke the silence and asked, "Son, why did you sit hidden in that hut?"

"I thought I might not be able to see my heart's desire openly in the shrine. That's why I wanted to look at it thoroughly," imran responded, lowering his eyes.

"Now, what are your intentions?" Baba Waqas asked.

Baba Waqas said, "Mistakes happen to children, and they have also happened to me. If you like, I can forgive them, or punish you. But do not consider yourself separate from me. If you want, you may call me again. If you grant me the opportunity, I will be very grateful. And if I am not called, I will never complain or speak of it," imran replied, keeping his gaze down.

"imran, we knew that your good fortune would always keep you close to us. We've always heard from the elders—'Polite and fortunate,' and 'Impolite and unfortunate.' So, I also liked your obedience. Now, since you have made a mistake, you will also bear its minor punishment. Your punishment is that you will have to wait another week—that's when your wish will be fulfilled."

Though imran was full of joy upon receiving forgiveness, an unspecified unease lingered that he couldn't quite understand at the moment.

When he returned home, imran realized that this unease was due to the displeasure of that beloved of his, whom he still needed to win over. Even this punishing week had to be endured, but it was also certain that their meeting had already been destined, even if only a week later. Lost in these thoughts, mran lay down on his bed. During the night, he suddenly felt that someone was pressing their face to his chest and sobbing. Without warning, limran woke up, but there was no one in his bed. The other bed, however, was occupied by children hugging and sleeping with their mother.

Imran entire body was filled with goosebumps. He still heard the sound of a woman's sobs echoing in his ears. He was overcome with fear; due to thirst, a thorn-like pain pierced his throat. A jug of water was on the table in front of him, but he couldn't muster the courage to reach for it. Then, when he saw a shadow crawling on the wall, he tried to scream, but he failed to make any sound.
