Cain took a slow step into the classroom, shoulders tense, heart tightening as if preparing for a spiritual execution. He fully expected Anna to be fuming, furious, maybe even seconds away from flipping a desk and beating him half to death for accepting Maris' confession. He had imagined chaos, tears, screaming, maybe Jayden and Maris cowering behind overturned chairs for cover.
He did not imagine this.
Anna stood with her arms folded, posture stiff but strangely composed. Jayden and Maris were seated in the front row with attentive expressions, almost as if they were in the middle of a lecture. The atmosphere was tense, yet also oddly structured, like a class in progress. Cain stopped dead in the doorway.
"So... uhhhh... what is going on girls?" Cain asked. His voice cracked slightly and he cleared his throat, wishing he had the power to turn invisible.
