POV: Kael DarkflameLocation: Candidate Barracks – Late Night
The lights were out. The wind outside had gone still. Even the moon hid behind clouds.
Kael lay awake.
His mind hadn't stopped spinning since the Echo Trial. Since the system glitched trying to classify him. Since he saw nobles pointing, whispering, fearing him.
But fear wasn't new.
Not for him.
The locket on his chest pulsed gently, a quiet heartbeat of warmth amid the cold.
Across the room, Ren snored softly.
Selene, as usual, didn't sleep. She sat near the door, legs crossed, blade unsheathed across her lap.
She hadn't spoken a word since the projection broke.
But he could feel her tension.
Like they both knew something was coming.

POV: Unnamed AssassinLocation: Rooftop above the barracks
Target confirmed: Kael. No surname. Unregistered bloodline. Echo failure. Mission: Elimination before Awakening.
The figure was draped in black, limbs wrapped in binding silk, eyes glowing faintly behind a facemask. Their system was nearly invisible — suppressed by heavy runes tattooed into their skin.
But the dagger in their hand glowed red — a core-forged item that could pierce most defensive spells and suppress low-tier system responses.
They dropped from the rooftop without a sound.
Through the side window.
Into the dark.

POV: Selene Frost
She didn't move at first.
Not when the shadow crept over the windowsill.
Not when the figure touched down on the floor.
Not even when the dagger was drawn.
Only when the assassin crossed the invisible line between shadows and moonlight—
Her eyes snapped open.
System Trigger – Selene Frost
➤ Combat Instinct: Active➤ Bond Trigger: Kael – Threat Detected➤ Cold Reign State: Partial
Selene's blade was already at the assassin's throat when they turned.
But they were fast.
Faster than she expected.
They ducked, spun, drove the dagger toward her chest.
She twisted — let it graze her arm, and slashed across their side. A glancing blow. Not enough.
Not fast enough.
The assassin flipped away, vanishing into shadow again.
Straight toward Kael's bed.

POV: Kael
He saw the figure coming.
Saw Selene leap to intercept, but too far now.
He didn't think.
He moved.
System Triggered – Emergency Defense Protocol
➤ Bloodline Threat Detected➤ Shadow Reaper Core – Pulse 1 Active
❗ First Blood Awakening Triggered ❗
The room went black.
Not dim.
Not dark.
Black.
A pulse exploded from Kael's body — shadows tearing upward like liquid claws.
The assassin stabbed — but the blade passed through smoke.
Kael was gone.
Or rather — he had become something else.

POV: Ren Halestride
Ren woke up choking on mist.
The room was thick with it.
Selene stood like a statue, frost gathering on the floor around her, sword raised.
In the center of the room stood Kael.
No longer just a boy.
Cloaked in rippling black tendrils of shadow, his eyes glowing red, his hair floating like smoke.
And the assassin?
Pinned against the wall — by nothing visible — choking, thrashing, screaming.
Kael walked toward them, one step at a time.
The floor cracked under his bare feet.

The assassin cried out, voice muffled. Their system began to spark, overloading.
Kael stopped an arm's length away.
He raised one hand.
"Who sent you?"
The assassin's eyes bulged.
Then popped.
Blood sprayed.
Their body went limp, and the shadows dropped them like a discarded robe.
Dead.

Selene met his gaze calmly.
The red in Kael's eyes dimmed.
The shadows receded.
And just like that…
He was himself again.
But something had changed.
He could feel it in his breath. In his blood. In his soul.
He was no longer hiding from the dark.
He was part of it now.

POV: Astra – Elsewhere, in her private viewing chamber
She watched the crystal flicker violently — then fracture into shards.
Even her encrypted viewing spell couldn't contain the surge.
"It's begun."
Behind her, the veiled advisor trembled.
"Should we report this to the Celestial Watch?"
Astra smiled faintly.
"No."
"We watch. We wait."
"And we prepare the world for his return."

POV: Kael – Outside the Barracks, Dawn
He stood at the cliff's edge, shirt loose, skin cold from the wind.
Selene stood beside him, her wounded arm already bandaged.
Neither spoke.
Not until the first rays of morning hit the mist below.
Then Selene said softly:
"You've awakened."
Kael nodded.
"I thought it would feel like power," he whispered. "Instead… it feels like a funeral."
She looked at him.
He didn't have to explain.
She already understood.
"From now on," Selene said, "they won't stop."
"I don't want them to," Kael answered.
"Let them come."
