To ease the tension in the room, Damien interrupted by saying, "John, so are you going to drink on Elena's behalf or not?"
"No big deal. It's just a few glasses of wine!" John picked up the glass filled with wine.
But before he could drink it, Elena placed a gentle hand on his arm, her own smile both grateful and resolute. "Thank you, John," she said, her voice warm and clear, "but tonight is your father's birthday. As his son, you have so many guests to greet and responsibilities to fulfill. It wouldn't be right for you to drink so much today."
John met her gaze, understanding and respect in his eyes.
Elena continued, taking away the glass from his hand, "Besides, I'm perfectly capable of raising a toast for myself." She looked around at the group, her voice ringing with sincerity and a touch of light humor. "Thank you for welcoming me in the group."
