The mine is a buzzing beehive of progress.
Gleaming carts of ore rumble past, wheels creaking under the weight of precious metals, uncut gems, and raw crystal pulled straight from the heart of the Ashlands. Sparks fly in the distance where smelters test early refining techniques, and above it all, Lucien Vale stands calmly with his arms folded behind his back, surveying his domain from the sorting deck.
The twins pop into view at his sides, each lugging scrolls, folders, and clipboards. "Worker morale's good!" chirps Vile. "One guy tried to unionize, but then someone explained what a union was and he got scared."
"Also," adds Vex, flipping through notes, "we've had four separate complaints about the bathing schedule, three about soup temperature, and one very passionate letter requesting a mining-themed musical as a morale booster."
Lucien blinks. "Musical?"
"He included lyrics," Vex says, holding up a handwritten page titled Pickaxe Passion: The Ballad of the Shaft.
Lucien smirks, then turns his gaze back to the carts. "Remind me to approve that one."
As the twins scribble notes, Lucien casually adds, "Also, the Void
Mother spoke to me last night while I was discussing production methods with Sila."
Three heads turn toward him in slow, unified horror.
"You what?" Ignara asks, voice barely above a whisper.
"She opened a portal while I was working. Don't give me that look, I was multitasking. And she told me to come see her." He scratches his chin. "She seemed pretty cool, actually."
"My Lord!" Ignara looks like she's swallowed a hot coal. "Are… you joking?"
"No?" He blinks innocently. "Nice lady. Bit dramatic."
The twins immediately begin flailing.
"Nice lady?!" Vex squeaks.
"She's chaos incarnate!" Vile wails.
"She's our literal patron goddess!" Ignara snaps, eyes wide. "She's the reason the Ashlands have any magic at all! Each kingdom's got a demi-god overseeing them, sure, but the Void Mother actually shows up! She meddles! She appears in your soup pot or your dreams! She doesn't follow rules, she is the rule!"
"She watched us," Lucien says thoughtfully. "In the middle of a very productive meeting."
Ignara buries her face in her hands.
The twins huddle like scared mice.
"She saw you?!" Vex gasps.
"Saw everything," Lucien says with a wink. "Told me to finish up before I came over. Very considerate."
"Do you even understand how dangerous she is?" Ignara hisses. "The last time she got bored, she turned an entire city into a flock of ash-pigeons because they outlawed nudity!"
Lucien sighs. "Alright, alright. I get it. She's a big deal. Sounds like I should probably go see what she wants."
The trio nods frantically.
"Where is she?" Lucien asks.
They all exchange looks.
"We don't know," Vile admits.
"She doesn't live anywhere," says Vex. "She has her own realm, or another plane, or, no one really knows. She just appears."
"So how do I meet her?"
"You have to pray," Ignara says reluctantly.
Lucien's face twists in distaste. "That's it? Just get on my knees and start talking?"
The twins nod. "That's the classic method," Vex says. "She responds to chaos. And apparently demon-lords rutting mid-report."
Lucien rolls his eyes. "Fine. Let's see what happens."
Later that day, inside the private royal tent, Lucien kneels beside a burning brazier. Serenith floats a few feet away, perched on a glowing orb of light, her wings tucked close.
"You, kneeling?" she teases.
Lucien doesn't open his eyes. "I'd kneel for you if it meant I got to taste the heaven between your thighs."
Serenith zaps him in the rear with a flick of her halo.
He flinches. "Fair."
"Carry on," she says sweetly.
Lucien closes his eyes again, takes a breath, and says, "Alright, Void Mother. It's me. Lucidius. Demon Lord. Sort of new at this. You popped up last night while I was in the middle of very important business-based coupling. I figured I should check in. Things are going well. The mine's booming. The staff's happy. I might try to industrialize the Ashlands and maybe take over the world, via trade agreements and seduction. Just figured I'd say hi."
The air in front of him shimmers. Then snaps.
A swirling rift tears open, ash swirling within like a cyclone. The Void Mother's head pops out. Wizened, wild-haired, and grinning like a madwoman.
"Well," she cackles. "That was the weirdest prayer I've heard in centuries."
"I aim to please." Lucien smirks.
"Demon lords don't usually chat me up," she says. "They either beg for power or scream as I curse their flesh." Her grin widens. "You're gonna be fun."
With a sudden whoosh, invisible tendrils wrap around Lucien and yank him through the rift.
"Hey!" Serenith cries, wings flaring.
The Void Mother pokes her head back through the portal. "You coming too, feathers?"
Serenith scowls. "Of course I'm coming. I'm his parole officer."
With an exasperated sigh, she flies through after them.
Lucien stumbles slightly as he lands on a rug made of glowing vines. They stand inside a cozy wooden cottage filled with flickering candles and shelves of strange jars. Outside the windows stretches a lush, verdant forest, impossibly thick and glowing softly.
"Where are we?" Lucien asks.
"Nowhere," the Void Mother replies.
She snaps her fingers. The forest vanishes. They now stand in a hellish wasteland, all fire and crumbling stone.
Another snap. They're underwater. Schools of glowing fish zip past the windows.
Another. They're standing in what looks exactly like the Ashlands.
Lucien whistles. "Neat trick."
"I know many," she says proudly.
She shimmers, her form vibrating for a moment, then with a flash, she transforms into a towering, impossibly beautiful elf-like woman. Her skin shimmers like onyx dust, her eyes burn like twin suns, and her body is sculpted with a decadence that seems less born and more designed.
Lucien has to adjust his collar.
Then his crotch.
She notices.
"Oh? Do you like this form better?" she says, voice dripping with mischief.
Lucien nods, eyes glued to her curves. "I'm not made of stone, lady."
"Not yet," she purrs, then gestures toward a set of velvet chairs. "Sit."
Lucien and Serenith comply.
"So," the Void Mother says, lounging backwards. "Why didn't you come to me sooner?"
Lucien shrugs. "Didn't know you existed until last night."
She blinks. "How's that possible?"
Serenith chimes in. "Lucien isn't a naturally-born demon lord. He was installed by the gods. Part of a divine rebalancing effort."
The Void Mother's eyes go wide. "Seriously?" Then she bursts into laughter. "Those lazy bastards finally moved their celestial asses."
She turns back to Lucien. "So what's the plan?"
Lucien leans back. "Simple. Fix the world. Not through slaughter, but through brilliance. Trade. Innovation. Seduction, where applicable."
The Void Mother howls with laughter again. "You're insane! I love it! Shame I'm forbidden from helping directly."
Lucien tenses. "Forbidden?"
The Void Mother waves a hand. "I'm only allowed to manage the land. Provide magic. Keep the balance. But I like watching."
Lucien smirks. "Then come watch. Travel with us. Witness the show."
"Hmph," she says. "I might just do that."
Serenith clears her throat. "Just remember, interfering with sentient affairs is strictly forbidden for your kind."
The Void Mother scoffs. "The gods barely care about the Ashlands. I've done what I want for centuries. Besides, you're here. You can file a complaint."
"I will," Serenith mutters. "In great detail."
Lucien chuckles. "You'll do fine. If you can handle me, you can handle anything."
The Void Mother stands.
She saunters over to Lucien, impossibly tall, impossibly graceful. She places her foot between his legs and nudges, her golden eyes gleaming.
"I wonder," she whispers. "Can you handle me, Demon Lord?"
Lucien's mouth curves into a dangerous smile. "Why don't we find out?"
Serenith throws her hands in the air. "Oh come on! There has to be a rule against this!"
"There is," the Void Mother says sweetly. "But rules are more like suggestions to me."
She turns and walks toward a shimmering door at the far end of the cottage. It opens to light and perfume and warmth. She beckons Lucien with a curl of her finger.
Lucien stands slowly.
Adjusts his coat.
Then walks in like a king toward his coronation.
"I'm putting everything in my report," Serenith groans.
The door closes behind him, and the warm light beyond swallows the sound of his footsteps.
A soft gasp echoes from behind it.
Then the Void-Mother's voice, amused and breathy, drifts through the wood. "Oh my. I didn't know demon lords got so big."
Something low and rumbling that might be Lucien's laugh follows, cut off by a groan that definitely isn't his.
The angel rolls her eyes until they almost glow, then conjures a cushion, settles onto it with a huff, and resigns herself to a very long wait.
