POV: Ash
I woke up screaming.
The poison was gone, but the memory of dying was still fresh in my mind. My chest burned where the black veins had been crawling toward my heart.
"Ember!" I yelled, sitting up fast.
The white room was gone. We were back in the pack house courtroom, and everyone was staring at me with shocked faces.
Cade was next to me on the floor, also awake and breathing hard. "What happened? Where's Ember?"
That's when I saw her.
She was lying between us, not moving. Her skin was pale as snow, and I couldn't see her chest rising and falling.
"No, no, no," I said, crawling over to her. "Ember, wake up!"
I pressed my ear to her chest. Her heartbeat was so quiet I almost couldn't hear it.
"She's barely alive," I told Cade.
Dr. Chen rushed over with her medical bag. "What happened during the test? One minute you were all gone, the next minute you appeared back here."
