Flashback
It was my thirteenth birthday, and what I wanted more than anything in the world was the diamond necklace.
It was Mother's. Father had brought it back with him from one of his long trips and he had given it to her to compensate her after one of their long arguments one night. It was the one thing Mother wouldn't let me touch, let alone wear.
So, while the house bustled with preparations for my party that afternoon, I snuck into her bedroom.
My plan was simple. I would find the necklace, show it to my Father who never refused me anything and plead with him to let me wear it just for that day.
Mother would be mad, but Father wouldn't let her scold me too much.
My heart thudded with excitement, as I thought of how envious my friends would be with the diamonds around my neck, I began searching Mother's room, starting with the drawers.
