Chapter 80 - Their bond

"What is going on with you?"

The question snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked up to find Xerxes standing across from me, his arms folded, eyes sharp and unblinking.

My leg had been bouncing beneath the desk, a clear sign I was restless, something he must have noticed.

Forcing myself to stay still, I leaned back slightly and arched a brow. "What do you mean?"

Xerxes didn't break eye contact. "Are you okay?" he asked, his tone slow and deliberate.

"I'm perfectly fine," I replied evenly. "Why do you ask?"

The way his eyes searched mine made it nearly impossible to lie. I hated how well he could read me, how being his twin made me feel as though every wall I built was made of glass to him.

Unable to hold his gaze any longer, I looked away, focusing on a document at the edge of my desk.

His quiet chuckle followed immediately. "There it is," he said, tipping back his chair. "Your tell. You can never hold eye contact when you lie. No wonder you always sucked at poker."
