VERA
A knock rattled my door, sharp and sudden, and I froze mid-step. For a moment, I couldn't breathe. Then Kane's low, steady voice drifted through. "Luna Vera… you asked for me."
My throat felt painfully dry, but I forced myself to answer, "Yes,come in."
The door creaked open, and Kane stepped inside. His broad frame filled the doorway, blocking out the light behind him. A jolt of unease ran through me at how big, how powerful, he looked compared to me.
One mistake. One slip. And it would all be over.
"Luna Vera?" Kane repeated, pulling me back from my spiraling thoughts.
"I… I need your help again, Kane," I whispered, lowering my gaze so he wouldn't see the storm in my eyes.
He frowned, stepping closer, his expression sharpened by concern. "Did something happen?" he asked quietly. "You don't… you don't look well."
"You could say that," I muttered, my voice shaking despite my effort to steady it. "Kane, I think I'm still in danger."
