Chapter 34 - DANGER

DANTE'S POV

Adeline and I are in my kitchen, trying to fix something for dinner when I hear my security alarm go off. I snap my head towards the direction of the sounds, instinctively wrapping my hands around her wrist. Automatically, all the lights in the house go off and all what's left are the lights outside. People are trying to break into my house and they're bold enough to keep going even though the alarms have gone off.

I can literally hear them trying to break my front door down. I grab Adeline and bring her upstairs to my room where I keep most of my guns. Guns I have just now realized she doesn't even know about yet because they're in my secret room which I can only enter via a trap door.

I can't kill anyone tonight, even in self-defense, so I'm going to have to find a way to drive out these intruders without breaking their necks. Turning to face her, I have only now realized the scared look she has on her face, even though it's mixed with a little bit more courage than I expected.

"What was that, Dante?" She asks, clutching her hands to her chest as she searches my eyes. I keep my hands wrapped firm on her waist and gaze into her eyes deeply as I lick my teeth in annoyance. We were supposed to make dinner and eat and now we've been interrupted. I don't know if I can keep my calm or if I'll just end up killing these intruders.

But I'm sure of one thing, I'll go to any lengths to keep Adeline safe.

"Don't worry princess. They're probably just robbers. I won't let them hurt you." She looks at me with a contemplative stare.

"They're not just robbers Dante. Your alarm went off. And that was a loud ass alarm yet they still seem to want to get in here so bad. How did they even find this place? You practically live in the middle of nowhere and it's hard to get into your place this easily?"

There she goes again with that brain of hers and I love her for it. I love so much how she's able to analyze every single situation, but right now, I really don't need her asking questions even though she's absolutely right.

My house is no easy place to get into, so if these people got in here, heard my alarm go off and are still this persistent on getting in, then it can only mean one thing. They were sent here by someone.

"Do you have enemies? Anyone you think would want to come after you?" She starts shooting questions at me, the therapist in her coming out but before I can answer her, I hear something break and I curse under my breath as I quickly shove her into my walk-in closet.

"Wait here princess." I say. "I mean it."

I don't give her time to protest. My walk-in closet is bigger than my room so I'm not worried she'll get suffocated in there or anything. I want to grab my gun but I quickly brush the though aside and grab a baseball bat instead. As I walk downstairs, I see two figures standing in my living room as they scan the area.

"Don't forget what the boss said." One of the man says. "Kill the man and leave the girl. Absolutely nothing is supposed to happen to her. So, if she's here, make sure you don't accidentally shoot her. The boss wants her all to himself."

He speaks with so much confidence and authority and nonchalance. As if he does this type of stuff all the time. Which explains why he's so bold to just walk in here with his chest held up high even though my alarms were basically blasting the whole place. He's sure of himself. Too sure and he looks fit, almost my size.

When I see a person who can fight, I know it. But he made one mistake tonight. The fool has no idea who I am and that's the advantage I always have. I keep a low profile so anyone coming against me almost never knows what to expect. He chose the wrong person tonight and I know exactly who sent him.

That motherfucker Adrian Wellington is just proving every single thing I suspected about him. I guess it really did bruise his ego when Adeline kissed me in front of all those people and right in front of him. If he's capable of sending people after me, to literally murder me in my own house, then that means he's capable of doing anything, even being involved in the sex trafficking organization I'm targeting.

I wasn't going to kill Adrian Wellington but he just got personal and I'll make sure I give him the most gruesome death ever. I'll make sure he suffers. After I get whatever information I might find from him, I'll kill the fucker.

It'll be like killing two birds with one stone. I'll keep him away from Adeline and find information about the organization simultaneously. I wanted to keep Adeline away from all this, but Adrian being in her life beats that purpose and I'll die before I ever let him lay his hands on her.

You may be a powerful man Adrian Wellington, but you have absolutely no idea who you're dealing with. The two men start climbing the stairs and just as I'm about to stomp down there and beat them to a pulp, I hear light footsteps behind me.

"What the fuck Adeline? I told you to stay put. What are you doing here baby?" I ask her as I pull her slowly and quietly behind the stairs. The men are walking up slowly and they're so close now. I have to get Adeline out of here without making a sound. I look down at her with irritation and concern in my face but all I see in her eyes is challenge.

"I can fight." She says in a whisper and in a shaky voice. I can feel the men getting closer and I have no idea what to do about Adeline. I know she can fight really good and I know these men aren't here to hurt her but I'm more worried about what she'll see when I lose my temper. If I even lay my hands on these men, I don't know if I'll let them get out of here alive.

They came here to kill me but they'll be the ones to die instead. I'll make sure of it.

"I know you're back there." One of the men says loudly as he reaches the end of the staircase and Adeline's eyes widen slightly in fear. I push Adeline slowly to the side and stay at the back of the wall just beside the end of the staircase.

"Come out and we'll make this less painful for you." The man says and I hear him fix up bullets in his gun. I immediately know this man isn't here to play or talk. He'll shoot me first chance he gets. This is so annoying, but he's going to die. He doesn't sound like a person who backs down. So right now, we're playing a game of kill or be killed.

As the man gets to the end of the staircase, he turns quickly without even wasting any time and immediately angles his gun at me. Adeline yelps and hops out of the way just as he pulls the trigger and pushing away his hand, I make sure the bullet ends up in the wall and not in Adeline's face.

"Shit." The man curses with wide eyes as he realizes he almost shot Adeline and he turns to me with a scowl on his face but before he can raise the gun again, I punch him in the face and hurt his fingers, making him drop the gun. Now he can only use his fists but before he even makes a move, I tackle him to the ground and start punching him repeatedly until his face is a swollen mess of blue and blood, but the man acts like he doesn't feel a thing. He spits out a few teeth and hits me right in the forehead with his head.

The other intruder suddenly appears behind me with a gun to my head as I succeed to wrap my arms around the neck of the other man below me.

"Let him go." The man behind me says but I can tell he's not as used to killing people as the man under me because he's hesitating to pull the trigger and that's exactly what's going to get him killed.

"Just kill him. Ge the job done so we can get the hell out of here." The man under me says as I wrap my hands tighter around his neck.

Before the man with the gun can react, I hear a loud smash, with a small yelp from Adeline as she knocks the man out with a baseball bat she must have just found in my room. The man falls to the floor with a thud and as he lies unconscious, I take the opportunity to beat the shit out of the man under me until he passes out and my hands are covered in blood.

But I can't bring myself to stop. Even as the man is basically barely breathing under me, I keep punching until I feel small hands on my shoulders struggling to pull me backwards and that's what brings me to my senses.

"You're going to kill him, Dante. Stop! He's passed out already!' Adeline yells at me and I stop my fist midair as I was readying to land another punch to the man's face.

"Why should I stop? He almost shot you. He broke into my house and he almost shot you. I'm going to kill him." I say with a deep and dark voice as I keep my gaze fixed to the man under me.

"I'm going to kill him Adeline," I repeat and all I hear is Adeline's shaky breath as she kneels next to me. I immediately snap my head towards her when I hear a small sob escape her throat and my hand falls to my side, my heart breaking as a tear escapes from her eyes.

"You're scaring me Dante." She says in almost a whisper, shaking her head slowly from side to side. "Please stop. It's over now." She says and wraps her arms around me.

I know she must be so confused right now. Although the situation has been handled in little to no time, she must be asking herself so many questions. She must be wondering why my house was broken into, why these people were so hell bent on killing me.

I don't want to tell her Adrian is behind this. I don't want to say anything in this moment. She's already being so strong just by still being here with me. So, I shut the hell up and calm myself. I let her hold me and I hold her back tightly to my chest and I just let her cry.
