Chapter 8 - The Truth of the Federation

Six Xylos-7 cycles had passed since the first group of humans awoke. The twenty fragile, confused individuals had now begun adapting to life in the Technological Oasis. Elena had become their constant presence—their comforter, teacher, and leader. She guided them through a strict daily schedule: physical recovery sessions, lessons on basic (filtered) Earth history, introductions to the Oasis and its environment, and fundamental navigation training within the complex.

Her bond with Anya, the calm woman from the first group, grew stronger. Anya possessed natural leadership qualities, able to soothe others with her gentle words and rational perspective. She became an invaluable ally to Elena, helping bridge the gap between Elena and the more skeptical individuals.

Among the group, Kira, the vocal teenager from the start, remained Elena's biggest challenge. Kira was intelligent, spirited, and deeply suspicious of any information Elena provided. She constantly asked pointed questions, challenging Elena's motives and even the Oasis's existence. While others began to accept, Kira remained firm in her rejection.

"You said Earth was destroyed," Kira started one morning as they ate their nutrient-dense breakfast prepared by the Oasis. "But you also said we're the last hope. How could a civilization be destroyed to that point? Something must be wrong. I know something is wrong."

Kira stared at Elena with sharp eyes, as if trying to read a lie on her face. Some in the group looked at Kira uneasily, while others, especially those still grappling with lost memories, nodded in agreement.

Elena felt a profound dilemma. She'd promised herself to be honest with these new humans. But Lysandra had warned her about the danger of overwhelming truth. Were they ready to face the full horror of Earth's collapse, including the Earth Federation's role in its downfall?

Lysandra hadn't fully recovered from the Project Omega activation, but she continued monitoring from her pillar of light. Elena could feel her constant presence, and the soft telepathic whispers often offered advice or information. Truth, absorbed slowly, is easier to accept than truth swallowed by force, Lysandra had advised her.

However, Kira wouldn't accept a gradual approach. She needed the complete truth.

Unveiling the Betrayal

That night, after the group had fallen asleep in their resting compartments, Elena returned to the Main Control Center. She stood before Lysandra's pillar of light.

"Kira's right," Elena said. "They deserve to know. I can't build a new civilization on lies or half-truths. What happened to the Earth Federation? And how big was their role in our destruction?"

Lysandra's pillar of light flickered. The truth is bitter, Guardian. The Earth Federation was not merely ineffective. They were corrupt, tyrannical, and ultimately, they were the poison that weakened your civilization from within, even before the Devourers arrived.

Lysandra projected a holographic scene into the air. This was Earth, in its final years before Exodus Alpha. It wasn't the blurry image Elena saw in her restored memories, but horrific detail.

Elena watched the Earth Federation's leaders, in opulent uniforms, seated in lavish skyscrapers, isolated from the suffering of the common people. They spoke of "unity" and "salvation," but their actions told a different story. Remaining natural resources were monopolized by giant corporations controlled by the Federation elite. Food went to a select few, while billions starved. Clean water became a scarce commodity sold at exorbitant prices.

The Federation had lost sight of their humanity. They saw the crisis as an opportunity to control, not to serve. They hoarded technology, restricted access to knowledge, and suppressed all dissent with an iron fist, Lysandra explained.

Elena saw footage of brutal persecution of dissidents, riots violently suppressed by the military, and the construction of massive walls separating wealthy cities from impoverished, squalid ghettos. Nausea swept over her. She'd known there was corruption, but not on this scale. She'd been too busy with her engineering work to see the bigger picture.

"Exodus Alpha... was that also part of their corruption?" Elena asked, her voice tight.

Exodus Alpha was a project started with pure intentions by scientists and idealists. However, the Federation soon saw it as a tool for their own salvation. They manipulated passenger lists, prioritizing their elites and families, abandoning the majority of Earth's population to die, Lysandra explained. Only through the hard work and sacrifice of scientists like yourself were some ships filled with more "neutral" seeds, individuals who truly represented human diversity.

Elena saw footage of Marcus, Lena, and Captain Kael secretly altering passenger lists, smuggling chosen individuals, ensuring true genetic diversity. They were unsung heroes, fighting tyranny from within. Respect and sadness flooded Elena. They hadn't just saved her, but millions of true human seeds.

The Federation government even planned to destroy Exodus Alpha ships they didn't fully control, to ensure no rivals in the new world, Lysandra added. The energy waves that damaged other ships' navigation, which we thought were Devourer side effects, were largely attacks launched by the Federation itself.

This truth hit Elena like a sledgehammer. It wasn't just failure. It was betrayal. The Federation had not only destroyed Earth, they'd also tried to destroy humanity's last hope. Rage burned in her chest, a fury far stronger than anything she'd felt before.

"How... how could they do that?" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible.

The inherent nature of unchecked power. They lost their vision, replaced by greed and fear. We saw this repeatedly in the history of other civilizations we observed. It is a dangerous pattern.

Lysandra dimmed the scene, returning to her pillar of light form. You see the full truth now, Guardian. This is the legacy you must impart to them. But wisely. They must learn from past mistakes, without falling into the same despair.

Elena's dilemma deepened. How could she tell this truth to the still-fragile group? How could she make them trust her if she had to reveal such a massive lie about their own ancestors? This could trigger deep mistrust, even division.

Building a New Foundation

The next morning, as the group gathered for breakfast, the atmosphere was tense. Kira still eyed Elena with deep skepticism.

"You haven't answered my question, Elena," Kira said, her voice demanding. "What about the Federation? And why don't we remember it?"

Elena took a deep breath. This was it. She looked at each face around her, seeking strength in their still-fragile eyes. Anya gave her an understanding look, nodding slowly.

"Sit down, everyone," Elena said, her voice calm but filled with newfound authority. "There's a truth you need to know. The truth about why Earth was destroyed, and why you're here."

She began to tell the story, hiding nothing. She spoke of the rampant corruption, of the elite hoarding resources, of the oppression of the people. She explained how the Federation tried to control Exodus Alpha, and how the core crew, including herself, secretly fought to ensure the true survival of the species.

As she spoke, the faces around her changed. Confusion turned to disbelief, then to anger, and finally, profound sorrow. Some closed their eyes, as if unable to accept the reality.

"No way," a young man said, his voice trembling. "Our government... they were supposed to protect us!"

"They betrayed us," Kira snarled, her eyes blazing with fury. "They left us to die! For what?"

"For power," Elena answered, her voice cold. "They saw destruction as an opportunity to grow stronger, to build a new world they alone controlled."

The tension in the room was thick. Some individuals began speaking to each other in low voices, whispers of disbelief and anger. Small factions naturally started to form. Some still clung to the hope that the Federation wasn't so bad, some fully accepted the bitter truth, and some began to suspect Elena, wondering why she'd kept this secret for so long.

"Why didn't you tell us this sooner?" Kira accused, standing up. "You let us believe a lie!"

"I wanted you to stabilize first. I wanted you to be ready. This isn't easy information to accept," Elena replied, trying to control her emotions. "I know this hurts. But we must learn from this. We must not repeat their mistakes."

"How can we trust you now?" asked a middle-aged woman, her eyes welling up. "If everything we knew was a lie?"

Elena felt the weight of leadership. She knew she had risked everything by revealing this truth. She could lose their trust. But she couldn't build a civilization on a fragile foundation.

"You don't need to trust me," Elena said, her voice firmer. "You need to trust in your own potential. The potential to be better than them. The potential to build something new, where there's no corruption, no oppression, no lies. This Oasis is your second chance. What will you do with it?"

She let the words hang in the air, challenging them. The room was silent, save for their heavy breathing. Finally, Anya stepped forward.

"She's right," Anya said, looking at her companions. "What's the point of living if we don't learn from mistakes? We've already lost everything. What else do we fear?" She then looked at Elena. "Thank you, Elena. For this truth."

Kira still looked at Elena skeptically, but there was a hint of doubt in her eyes. Anya's words carried weight.

Elena knew this was just the beginning. The truth of the Federation was a deep wound, and it would take time to heal. But she also knew this was a crucial first step. They weren't just waking up from stasis; they were also waking up from a lie. And as the Guardian, her duty was to guide them through both light and darkness, towards a new horizon.

What do you think about Elena's decision to reveal the full truth? Do you believe it was the right choice for building a stronger future?
