Chapter 2 - Lights out

Up in the attic sat Betty and her doll Lisa in front of an illuminated doll house. The air in the attic became cold as she began to shiver

" it's going to be alright Lisa, don't be scared."

Betty assured Lisa, though she showed fear.

The windows began to flap and the night owl cried " hoot hoot who "

Tears trickled down poor frightened Betty's face, whose arms secured the doll in her bosom.

" It's going to be fine Lisa, I'm right here." She once more assured the inanimate object that lay still in her arms.

When suddenly, Betty heard a cackle, it was so soft and deceptive. She listened to hear the direction of the voice but it became faint and stopped, causing Betty to be filled with fear, she ran out of the attic and down to the living room, leaving Lisa behind.

" Mommy I'm scared! "

She yelled as she knelt hidden behind her mother, pulling on her dress.

" There's nothing to be afraid of sweetie, mommy won't let anything happen to you."

Betty's mother assured her, lifting Betty up to her feet.

" Nothing to be sca- "

Her dad began, but was cut off by a sudden gust of wind that blew in through the kitchen windows, slamming it with a loud bang. The power instantly went out, drowning the cottage in darkness. Little Betty screamed with her hands covering her ears.

" Betty, it's alright."

Her dad said almost immediately.

" Wait here. I'll go check the fuse box." He said to his wife.

He reached for one of the drawers in the kitchen—one that he thought contained batteries and torches, He instantly winced as he placed his hand inside " what happend? "

Anne asked in a panic…

" it's nothing honey, just the wrong drawer. "

Henry sighed as he continued in the search. After what seemed like forever, he finally found the drawer and flicked on the switch," here " he said as he handed his wife some candles, making his way towards the basement door " I'll be right back."

The stair creaked beneath his weight as he walked inside the basement.
