Chapter 20 - Chapter 19

Shadows and Secrets

Location: Undisclosed Widow Base — Interior, Cold Steel Walls. Dim red lighting. Monitors flicker with global surveillance.

The base was quiet, too quiet. Rows of monitors cast eerie glows on the polished black walls, displaying surveillance feeds of metahumans, terrorist factions, rogue states, and whispered names once thought to be myths.

President Stephen Lance Carter stepped through the automatic door, his presence as heavy as the silence that preceded him. Clad in a tailored black tactical suit laced with a nanofiber underlay, his golden-glowing eyes pierced through the darkness like a blade. No cape today—just iron purpose.

At the far end, Melina Vostokoff glanced up from a holo-console. Calm, calculating, her black tactical uniform was as crisp as her words.

MELINA

(Smiling faintly)

"You're early, Mr. President."

LANCE

(Clipped, focused)

"I don't sleep much anymore."

Melina didn't press. She simply returned to her console. A soft hiss announced another figure entering the room.

Yelena Belova, clad in her signature white combat gear—half-zipped and insolently casual—strolled in holding a manila folder.

YELENA

"Finally. I almost died getting this intel. You're lucky I'm cute."

She slapped the folder onto the black steel table. Lance picked it up without a word. Inside—photos, documents, redacted CIA dossiers. Each image sparked déjà vu.

Peter Parker. Matt Murdock. Bruce Banner. Reed Richards. Stephen Strange. Namor. Marc Spector. Others too—echoes from another life.

Lance's mind buzzed. Meta-knowledge and muscle memory fused, and for a moment, the past-life otaku inside him surfaced—only to be crushed beneath the weight of responsibility.

YELENA

(Grinning)

"You've got your little comic book league now. What's the plan—catch 'em all?"

LANCE

(Snaps coldly)

"I'm not playing games, Yelena. These people are potential assets… or threats."

The words hit harder than a thrown dagger.

YELENA

(Softer, wounded)

"...I was joking, Lance."

He looked at her. Regret flickered in his eyes, but no apology came. She turned away.

MELINA

(Quiet, observing)

"They're your daughters, Stephen. Don't forget what it cost to gain their trust."

Lance said nothing.

The silence was thick with tension. The ghosts of their pasts clung to every corner of the room.

Justice in Flames

Location 1: A frozen scrapyard outside Moscow – Night

Snow blew like ash. Scraps of frozen metal littered the yard like bones. Ivan Vanko, ragged and wild-eyed, hunched over a flickering arc reactor. He didn't look up until he heard it—

Sonic boom.

Lance descended like divine judgment, eyes glowing like twin suns.

IVAN

(Spitting)

"Who the hell—?"

FWOOOM!

A burst of heat vision incinerated the tools in Ivan's hands. He dove back, yanking a coiled electric whip into action.

IVAN

"I'll burn you to bones, American dog!"

Crack. The whip lashed toward Lance—but he didn't flinch.

He moved like lightning. One blinding flash—and CRUNCH.

Ivan's chest imploded under a single punch. His body hit the snow with a wet thud. Steam hissed from the blood as it evaporated on contact with Lance's boots.

No words. No mercy.

Pacific Ocean – A.I.M. Oil Rig – Midnight inferno

The rig was in chaos. Black smoke towered into the sky. Explosions roared. Metal shrieked as fire devoured the structure.

Among it all, Maya Hansen, bloodied and limping, stumbled across the gangplank.

Suddenly—a flash of light. A figure in radiant white and gold descended from the smoke.

Lance.

Wearing Toni's prototype suit—sleek, powered by solar conduits that pulsed with golden energy. The white fabric shimmered, reinforced with Wakandan alloys. A golden eagle blazed across his chest.

MAYA

(Breathless)

"You came…"

He lifted her effortlessly.

LANCE

"Hold on."

She looked up just as the rig exploded behind them.

Inside the remains of the command tower, Aldrich Killian stood defiant, glowing with Extremis energy. His skin was magma; his breath, smoke.

KILLIAN

"You think you're better than me? You're just another freak—hiding behind a suit!"

Lance didn't argue.

He just blinked once.

And then unleashed a lance of concentrated golden heat vision, vaporizing Killian's torso.

The walls melted behind him.

Killian never screamed. He simply vanished in fire.

Montage: Global scale military operation

Over the next week, Lance became a myth. A god of retribution.

Afghanistan. Syria. Sudan. Turkey. The Philippines. A dozen 10 Rings strongholds fell before dawn even touched their soil.

Each base—reduced to cinders by solar fire. Each warlord—neutralized with terrifying precision.

The world was watching. Every feed. Every screen. And he wanted them to.

Lance hovered above the ancient stone monastery, now modernized with radar towers and automated turrets. Snow whipped around him.

Inside, The Mandarin stood waiting.

This was not Trevor Slattery. Nor Wenwu. This was Xu Zhenlong, wielder of the original Ten Rings of Power.

He raised his arms, and the rings danced like dragons around his wrists.

MANDARIN

"Stephen Lance Carter… The False Sun."

LANCE

"You hurt my people. You raised an army of shadows."

MANDARIN

"I am the balance to your flame. The world must fear something."

The mountain cracked under their battle.

Rings exploded with kinetic energy. Lance countered with gravity wells and plasma bursts. Sonic booms shattered glass temples. Heat vision carved gashes in the earth. The Ten Rings twisted time, bent light, warped force—

But Lance adapted. His energy manipulation deepened. The Template System pulsed:

[Template: Superman — 71% → 74%]

He absorbed Mandarin's energy. Redirected the blasts. He grew stronger with every hit.

In one blinding clash, Lance caught all ten rings mid-air with telekinetic precision. The Mandarin stared in horror as they froze in place.

LANCE

(Quietly)

"You lost the right to wield them when you started enslaving children."

He crushed the rings into glowing fragments, absorbing them into his suit.

With one final solar flare, the fortress was reduced to molten rock.

Lance hovered in the void, above Earth. Alone.

Staring down at the blue planet, hands glowing with restrained power.

His voice cracked softly through the void:

"I had the knowledge. I knew the plots. I knew Obadiah would betray her. But I thought… if I was just strong enough, fast enough, it wouldn't matter. I could rewrite fate. Protect everyone."

He closed his eyes.

"But I let my power blind me. I let comfort lie to me. She could've died. Because I played god and forgot what it meant to be human."

His hand clenched into a fist. The golden energy flared again.

"No more. From now on… I end the threats before they begin."

He turned, flying deeper into the stars.

A new crusade, silent and unseen, was just beginning.
