Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The beginning before the end

Mikurajima island, Monday, 04 November 2025, 04:36 JST

Japanese SAT forces invaded Mikurajima at dawn.

Helicopters, fleets, and armed units swarmed the island in minutes.

The government's initial broadcast had been simple: whoever retrieves Tokyo's Governor alive will be rewarded.

But the mission unraveled almost instantly. Civilian casualties mounted. Residents flooded police lines with desperate calls. And then came the reports from midnight—paranormal activities no one could explain, and something on the island that did not want to be found.

Coco and Miko were the first to go down—unconscious bodies restrained without resistance. Kai and Umi surrendered on sight; even they knew they were outnumbered.

By nightfall, every invader involved in the retrieval mission had been rounded up and arrested.

Jin staggered through the trees with Ryu slumped on his back, both barely standing. That's when they felt it—something was off. Their elements wouldn't trigger. No spark, no gust. Just…nothing.

Before they could even question it, the forest erupted with shouts.

SAT units ambushed them from all sides, shields raised, rifles pointed.

Jin planted his foot, refusing to budge, tightening his grip on Ryu—

"Put me down…just surrender. We're worn out." - Ryu accepting

Exhaustion won. Jin lowered him gently to the ground and raised his hands. They both knelt, breathless, beaten.

The SAT stormed in.

A hard blow to the back of the head—

Black bags—

Cold cuffs—

And everything went dark.

Somewhere on the island

A shadow lingered at the edge of the forest, almost forgotten by the chaos that had consumed the island. Itachi stood there, silent, watching the aftermath. His eyes glimmered with cold calculation as he began to move, hands weaving through the air in precise, like he's performing a ritual.

"Fūshiki complete. Huff...This vessel is finally deteriorating, and I'll perish as well." - Itachi

"They're a threat…these inheritors, they cannot interfere. This is the only way to neutralize them, for good." - Itachi

The air around him thickened, trembling with a strange energy. Ancient symbols glowed faintly as he performed a sealing ritual, his voice a chant that carried across the island. Slowly, systematically, every modern day elemental inheritor, their powers, their elements—were locked away that night, forever...but not revoked, their markings still present.

Not a sound.

Not a whisper of elemental energy.

They were powerless.

And Itachi watched, satisfied...as he falls on his knees, and the Governor returns to his body, taking his last breath, he passes away.

Somewhere somewhere else on the island

Cloaked in darkness deeper than the sea surrounding the island, a different presence stirred.

The unidentified group, their faces hidden behind pale masks and long white robes, watching from a secluded cliff overlooking people on the Island being taken in.

One of the masked men stepped forward, voice low but trembling with eagerness.

"We have discovered all four of them, young master. Shall we interfere with the SAT units? Strike the elementals while they are still down?"

A soft rustle of pages answered him first.

The leader —the only one not wearing a mask, finally spoke

"No."

The word echoed like a verdict.

"It is still too early," he continued, voice calm, almost gentle. "Take heart, my fellow siblings. The time will come. We have merely completed Phase One."

The others straightened, hanging onto every word.

"This..." he said, lifting a rather uncanny book slightly, as if it was beyond comprehension.

"…is only the beginning before the end."
