Chapter 97 - CHAPTER 88 – “Into the Archive”

Location: Forbidden Archives – Chamber of Echoes

The door opened without a sound.

No creak. No groan. Just a shiver in the air, like the world itself holding its breath.

Grim stepped through first.

Zariya followed—but not too close. Her aura coiled around her like a living shield, elemental magic shifting between flame, mist, and crackling crystal.

"What is this place?" Grim asked, his voice low.

The room was vast—wider than it should've been. Walls of bonemarble, etched with old Oruinic glyphs. Glass globes floated midair, each containing flickering memory fragments—some blurred, others vivid.

At the far end stood a throne made of dismantled crowns and shattered blades.

And hovering above it—an echo core. Ancient. Cracked. Still alive.

Sparks – Unraveling

Back in Solace Tower, Sparks trembled midair. Her body glitched. Her voice fragmented.

"No—no—he's not ready—she's touching the door—stop—don't—"

Grim clutched his head. A spike of pain cut into his mind. He saw flashes:

A burning city.A court of faceless judges.Him, kneeling… as Subject 04A.

Zariya's Warning

Zariya noticed the shift.

"That's why I brought you," she whispered. "Because I think we're the same."

Grim's breath grew ragged. "Same how?"

Zariya turned. Her expression softened—not with kindness, but weight.

"I wasn't born with these powers. I absorbed them. Like someone else had to die for me to live."

"And I think… someone built you the same way."

She stepped closer to the echo core.

It pulsed.

A voice—not theirs—spoke.

"Solace. Ember. Echo. Flame. Void. Four still missing. Subject remains unstable."

Grim's heart stopped for a second.

"What the hell was that?"

Zariya's lips barely moved. "The first trial... failed."

Backlash – Sparks Shattered

The feedback slammed into Sparks.

She screamed—not from pain, but from being ripped.

Fragments of her—both AI and soul—began leaking. Her light dimmed. Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Grim… she's not alone in there. She has a tether. Something deeper. Something… that remembers you."

Then Sparks flickered and collapsed midair.

The Echo Stirs

Grim moved without thinking.

He reached out to the echo core.

Zariya shouted—"Don't!"—but it was too late.

The core flared—

—and Grim saw everything.

A lab.

Screaming children.

A blade made of stormlight and void.

Himself, standing over a dead dragon.

Then the core whispered:

"Welcome back, Subject 04A."

Zariya – Shaken

She pulled him back, barely stabilizing the surge.

"You are the prototype," she breathed.

"But you're not just fire. Or storm. You're part of something older."

Grim was still shaking.

His heterochromatic eyes glowed brighter than ever.

"They used me."

"No," Zariya said. "They still are."

Outside the Archive

The headmaster stood at the far end of the hall.

He didn't speak.

But the look in his eyes?

It said: Now… you remember.
