Chapter 3 - Chapter 003

The maid's cutlery dropped to the dinning, her mouth agapes. She was bewildered by the statement Kaira had just made. Anderson couldn't believe what he just heard, her words echoing in his ears, certainly he didn't hear her.

With a smirk on her face, Kiara looked from one to the other, waiting for them to either deny it or admit the truth. After what she had overheard at the hospital, she was certain that her husband was probably preparing to present her with divorce papers.

From the way he has been behaving since she lost their child, she knew there had to be more to it. It wasn't because he still felt anything for her.

Dropping his cutlery, he reached out to feel her temperature, which made her scrunch her face in irritation.

"What are you doing?" She asked, already certain where this was heading.

They would try to portray her as someone losing her sanity to cover up their affair, but she was ready to go to any length to expose them.

For three years, they had been having an affair under this very roof, yet she had never noticed or even suspected that her husband was cheating on her with the maid. She doesn't even know the maid, he was the one who brought her as a help.

"Don't you think we need to get back to the hospital? You're not sounding okay, and your temperature...." He paused, his gaze fixed on her.

"Don't think I'm stupid. I'm not losing it." Kiara snapped. "I asked a question, how long have you two been dating?" She repeated, leaving the part about her baby.

The maid immediately sensed that Kiara wasn't kidding. She hurriedly rose from her chair, waving her hands in the air as she spoke.

"Ma'am, what are you talking about? We are not having an affair! I mean, I can't date the boss, he doesn't even have eyes for me!"

"Don't lie to me! I know something is going on between the both of you." Kiara roared, pulling out the container she has been hiding.

Both of them turned in her direction, their eyes widening. Realizing what she was holding, her husband jerked up from his seat. It was what they thought, but a different substance was inside it.

"Why do you have that? Wait, don't tell me you intend to kill yourself over some false accusations."

She burst into laughter, even though she was hurting deeply.

What hadn't she done for this man? They had been together since college, and she had been thrilled to marry the guy she had always dreamt of.

What was missing? What had gone wrong? If there was something he didn't like about her, he should have told her, not go behind her back with someone else.

They both stared at her as she laughed, their expressions shifting. It was as if her reaction confirmed their suspicions, that she was beginning to lose it, probably because of the baby she had lost.

"Listen, if this is about the baby, we can have another one." He said, stepping closer. "I'm here for you, we can work this out."

She stood up abruptly, raising a hand to stop him.

"Don't you dare come any closer." She warned. Her voice was sharp, unwavering. "What were you doing at the hospital today? Why were you there?"

His brows furrowed as he shifted his gaze between the maid and Kiara. He knew he had been there, but was the maid the one who had told her?

A surge of frustration built inside him, but he forced himself to remain calm. If the maid had warned him beforehand, he could have prepared a lie. But she hadn't. Now, he was caught off guard.

He wasn't sure how Kiara had found out or who could have told her.

"I wasn't at the hospital." He said quickly. "I told you, l've been busy with work, and you know that."

"Look at her, she's turning pale. If you don't tell me the truth, we might lose her at any moment." Kiara warned.

He didn't doubt it because of what she was holding. But unbeknownst to him, that was not what she added to the food.

"Please, you can't do this to me!" The maid pleaded, dropping to the ground. "I have nothing to do with your husband, you have to believe me!"

The maids vision blurred, her eyes growing heavier with each passing second. She couldn't help it.

"If anything happen to her, the police will hold you responsible." Her husband said sharply.

Kiara let out a dry laugh. "Let's see who they hold responsible when they find a body in this house."

She turned to the maid. "As for you, I have an antidote. I'll give it to you only if you tell me the truth."

The maid glanced at her husband, silently pleading with her eyes, but he gave nothing away. She knew that if she admitted their affair, it would ruin his reputation in society. That was why he had kept it a secret all along.

After a long pause, she finally spoke.

"Yes." She confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "He was at the hospital to see you, but I told him you were sleeping."

"Lies!" Kiara snapped. "You told him I was sleeping? Do you want to die? I can add this to your mouth, and it'll be over in seconds."

The maid shook her head frantically, rubbing her hands together in desperation.

"No, please! You can't do that." Tears streamed down her face as she finally broke. "We have been having an affair. I'm his girlfriend."

Kiara's jaw dropped, her heart sinking even further.

A tear slipped from her eyes, the weight of betrayal growing deeper with each passing second.

Rising from the floor, she glanced in her husband's direction. His head was cast down, he couldn't bring himself to look at her.

"What she said... is it true?" She asked, her voice breaking between sobs. "I'm talking to you. What have I done to deserve this?"

He exhaled sharply, still avoiding her gaze.

"I stopped loving you even before our marriage." He admitted coldly. "Marrying you was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made, and I'm ready to correct it."

The words echoed in the room, ringing in her ears. This was her husband, the man she had loved, uttering such cruel words. Where had the love gone? What had happened over the years?

If something was wrong, they should have talked about it, not ended things this way.

She was still lost in thought when a sudden scream pierced the air.

"Layla! Are you with me?"

Snapping back to reality, she looked down at the floor, her husband was crouched beside the maid, shaking her limp body. He tried to wake her, but she wasn't responding.

"If anything happens to her, I swear I'll have you locked up and make your life miserable." He threatened.

That was it. The final confirmation. The love was long gone, had been for a long time. She had just been too blind to see it.

Speechless, she turned on her heels and strode toward the bedroom to grab her car keys.

A few minutes later, she returned.

"Where do you think you're going?" He demanded, making her pause.

She turned slightly, her expression unreadable. "Make sure the papers are ready before I come back." She said evenly.

Then, her gaze flickered toward the unconscious maid.

"Don't worry about her." She added, reaching for the door handle. "She'll be fine."

And with that, she stepped outside, closing the door behind her.
