Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Catching Fishes

The next morning, Saiki had already returned to the tent before everyone else woke up.

"Saiki… you're already awake?"

Seeing that Saiki had already stood up, Hirata Yosuke said with a voice full of exhaustion.

"Mm, just woke up." Saiki replied.

"This environment is really a bit hard to sleep soundly in…"

Hirata also sat up, shook his head a bit helplessly, "The tent is too hot, and there's no mattress or pillow or anything… feels like back pain and sore waist."

And after Hirata woke up, the other students in the class also got up one after another.

Yesterday's fatigue made them fall asleep quickly, but the harsh environment didn't allow them to fully rest.

'Sorry, last night I was in a comfortable air-conditioned room.' Saiki thought in his heart.

———

After everyone had successively finished washing up, Chabashira Sae gathered everyone together for roll call, and then everyone could carry out free activities again.

Hirata arranged various tasks for everyone, some went to pick fruits, some went fishing, some were responsible for upgrading the campsite, and some went out to check on other classes' situations. But he didn't force it; he looked at what everyone was good at and their personal will.

Saiki originally seemed to plan to not do anything and just stay at the camp to rest. But after seeing Yamauchi Haruki staying behind in order to get closer to the girls, he still resolutely chose to go out and found Hirata.

"Saiki, you're going out too?"

Hirata asked somewhat surprised. After receiving a definite answer from Saiki, he handed over a spare set of fishing tools from the camp to him.

"Ike and the others already went ahead to handle fishing. Saiki, do you know how to fish?"

'Fishing, huh? I haven't really tried it, but if I use psychokinesis, I should be able to catch quite a lot.'

Saiki thought in his heart. Compared to staying with someone like Yamauchi Haruki, going out fishing should be a better choice, so he didn't hesitate much. He took the tools from Hirata and headed to the riverbank.

But just after Saiki left the camp, he heard a set of slightly hurried footsteps coming from behind. Sakura Airi was following behind him.

"Sakura?" Saiki looked at her with a bit of confusion.

"Um… I was thinking… if I could… help you a little, Saiki…"

After Sakura Airi's gaze met with Saiki's, she quickly lowered her head again, focusing on the ground. She still looked a bit flustered.

"And also… there are just too many people at the camp… if I stay there… it feels kind of uncomfortable…"

After hearing Sakura Airi's words, Saiki didn't say anything. He silently allowed her to come along with him.

Saiki casually found a spot by the river and sat down on a rock he arranged. Sakura Airi had no choice but to sit beside him.

'With Sakura here, I can't openly use my abilities… guess I'll just pretend for a bit.'

While thinking this, Saiki used clairvoyance and located Ike Kanji's position, learning his fishing movements. The bucket next to Ike already had several fish in it.

'Didn't expect Ike to actually be able to fish. Seems like among the three idiots, only Yamauchi doesn't have any particular skill… Ike's fishing level should be decent. Then I'll just catch slightly fewer fish than him.'

Saiki stopped using clairvoyance, then began imitating Ike Kanji's movements and started fishing.

[Saiki… actually knows how to fish?]

Seeing Saiki's actions, Sakura Airi was slightly surprised.

At the same time, Saiki activated psychokinesis, guiding the nearest fish to approach gradually.

"It's hooked!"

Next to him, Sakura Airi saw the fishing rod in Saiki's hand suddenly dip, and she quickly grabbed a net to help him scoop up the fish.

But just as she took a few hurried steps, her nervousness made her footing unstable. She lost balance and fell toward the river.

'!'

At that moment, Sakura Airi's forward-falling body suddenly stopped mid-air. Saiki quickly reached out and supported her.

'Yare yare… that was close. Good thing I used psychokinesis in time.'

In that moment just now, it was Saiki who used psychokinesis to hold onto Sakura Airi's body. And to avoid exposing his power, he had no choice but to hold the fishing rod with one hand and grab Sakura Airi's hand with the other.

'Tripping on flat ground? So Sakura has the clumsy character setting too?'

Saiki started realizing that bringing Sakura Airi with him was indeed a mistake. Once she regained her balance, he slowly let go of her hand.

"I-I'm very sorry!"

Sakura Airi's face turned red, and her body trembled slightly from embarrassment.

[I… I only caused trouble… no good… I can't bring any more trouble to Saiki-kun…]

"I-I'll quickly scoop the fish!"

Sakura Airi bit her lip, remembered what she originally wanted to do, and hurriedly reached out with the net into the water to try and scoop the fish.

The fish wasn't big, and the net was quite large, but because of her nervousness, her hands were trembling and she didn't know what to do. She still couldn't scoop the fish after a long time.

[Ugh, dizzy… I'm gonna throw up, ugh…]

Saiki could clearly hear waves of inner thoughts.

They belonged to the fish.

Saiki was already completely helpless at this point, but he had no choice. He activated his ability again, the fish leapt directly out of the water and landed into the net.

"It-it worked!"

This surprised Sakura Airi, who quickly and carefully placed the fish into the bucket.

"Saiki-kun, s-so amazing! You caught one right away!"

Sakura Airi turned her head and immediately praised Saiki's fishing skills.

"Just lucky."

But Saiki was already slightly regretting coming here to fish.

"Saiki, Saiki-kun?"

But just at that moment, another voice came from behind. Before it even rang out, Saiki had already identified the person through telepathy.

Shiina Hiyori.

At this moment, Shiina was standing behind Saiki, looking at him and Sakura Airi with a surprised expression. After staring for several seconds, she finally opened her mouth, "Saiki-kun… you actually know how to fish?"

"Mm."

Saiki could only nod. He hadn't expected Shiina to appear here either.

In the morning, he had already used clairvoyance to check on the movements of the other classes. The D-Class led by Ryuen had no special actions. They were just spending points to buy snacks and drinks on the shore as if they were fully enjoying a vacation.

If possible, Saiki even wanted to temporarily join Class D.

"Shiina, why are you here?"

Saiki asked, though with telepathy, he already knew the answer.

Class D wasn't planning anything major. Their original plan was to enjoy today and then collectively forfeit and return to the cruise ship.

Shiina simply wanted to come and see how Saiki was doing, so she came near Class C's camp, but she didn't expect Saiki would be fishing here.

"I just wanted to come and see how you were doing, Saiki-kun. But don't worry, I don't have any intention of stealing information."

Her gaze shifted, quickly falling onto Sakura Airi, and the latter's gaze also instinctively landed on Shiina.

Their gazes met, and in the next second, almost as if by tacit agreement, they looked away at the same time.

[This person seems very close to Saiki-kun… probably his classmate… should I greet her…?]

[Never seen this person before… which class is she from…? Seems familiar with Saiki-kun… is she his friend… what do I do… I don't know how to talk to her…]

The thoughts of the two girls were quite similar in some ways, but because of each other's presence, neither of them initiated conversation with Saiki. A strange silence spread among the three.

'These two social anxiety girls… actually met each other?'

Saiki sighed helplessly in his heart. If these two met in any other setting, they probably wouldn't say a word to each other.

'But…'

'Why am I even here now… both of their gazes are focused on me, who's just fishing…'

'This is so awkward… so uncomfortable… say something already.'

Saiki's brain spun rapidly, and after several seconds of thinking, he finally opened his mouth, "Shiina, how's the situation with your class?"

"Everyone seems to be enjoying the trip. Ryuen and the others are planning to play around on the island for a while and then return to the ship. As for other details, I'm not really sure, though it seems like Ryuen and Ibuki had a fight yesterday." Shiina said with a smile.

She wasn't lying, because Ryuen hadn't told her the full plan. Though he acknowledged her ability, her detached personality meant she wouldn't contribute much in this exam. So he didn't share his plans with her.

But Shiina had a very clever mind and had more or less guessed Ryuen's plan.

"Ibuki… is she in your class now?"

"Mm." Saiki nodded.

"Your classmates are really kind. But in this exam, all classes are enemies, you know? Even though I don't want inter-class relationships to be damaged, I still hope Saiki-kun will be a little careful."

Shiina smiled. On one hand, she saw Saiki as a close friend; on the other, she was a Class D student, so she could only give this kind of warning.

"I understand."

"Oh right, Saiki-kun."

At this moment, Shiina took a novel out of her bag.

"Ryuen-kun said we could freely spend points, so I rented a novel to pass the time. But our Class D should be returning to the ship soon. If… you're interested, you can read this novel too!"

"Thank you very much." Saiki accepted the book Shiina handed him.

'Shiina… also can be considered to have helped quite a bit, right.'

Saiki was thinking this in his heart. With the novel given by Shiina, he finally had a way to pass the time. After all, he couldn't use teleportation to go to other places all the time.

Although, at the moment he received the book, Shiina's inner thoughts had already spoiled most of the novel's plot, but having it was still better than nothing.
